Last week it was reported that Houston-based contracting giant KBR had been awarded a $6.4 billion contract to build an oil refinery in Angola, one of the world's richest countries in terms of petrochemicals (the US imports more oil from Angola than it does from Kuwait) but one of the poorest in terms of population (70% of Angolans live below the poverty line).
Houstonist has always loved the groovy, psychedelic, exotic sounds of Ennio Morricone, the Italian composer hired on the cheap in the 1960s to write soundtracks for the so-called spaghetti Westerns directed by Sergio Leone and others. The eerie bird calls, dark tension and lines like "Keep your hand on your gun. Don't you trust anyone. There's just one kinda man you can trust, that's a dead man," give Houstonist the feelings of tension and struggle for survival that make those movies so great.
Look, it's been a long few weeks, what with the Olympics and the hurricanes and the conventions and various and sundry other dramas dominating the web and television. Sometimes a person just wants to engage in a little mindless entertainment, a frivolity, if you will.
Houstonist first learned of Bob Log III while watching late-night television sometime in the midst of our sloppy punk rock blues phase. We were fascinated and puzzled by the Evil Knievel jumpsuit and the motorcycle helmet-telephone receiver hybrid the one-man-band wears in lieu of a microphone.
It's been a while since we had a Friday Afternoon Video on Houstonist, and we decided that the Fourth of July was as good a Friday as any to bring back this time-honored tradition.
Snoop Dogg is performing at Warehouse Live tomorrow night, and we thought we would celebrate by posting the music video of his new song, "Sensual Seduction."
