The Chronicle reported yesterday on a proposal to revive passenger train service between Houston and Galveston — an idea that could become reality in five years, according to a study group. A commuter rail line alongside the Gulf Freeway would (theoretically, at least) become popular with commuters, cut down on freeway traffic and provide a vital evacuation link in case a hurricane threatened Galveston. "It has all the elements that would make it eminently... more ›

You may remember that last month our fair neighbor Galveston was in the news because of the perceived need to hire a marketing firm to revamp the city's image. North Star Destination Strategies out of Nashville, Tennessee was hired to try and persuade a few more folks to head south to the island. After conducting a few surveys and finding out that most thought of Galveston beaches as dirty, stinky cesspools of sorts, North Star... more ›

A couple of weeks ago, we talked about how a marketing firm suggested that adding "Island" to the city of Galveston's name would make tourists flock to the island. Presumably, tourists would then realize that it actually is an island, and everyone knows islands = fun (well, OK, there are some exceptions). But if you got excited about the possibility of the City of Galveston Island, simmer down: The Galveston City Council pretty much shot... more ›

Earlier this year, the City of Galveston hired outside marketing firm North Star Destination Strategies to help build a campaign that would attract more tourists and residents to the island. After months and months of research, the firm has now delivered campaign ideas and a suggestion to the city: change “Galveston” to “Galveston Island.” Man, that’s going to make singing Glen Campbell’s old hit a lot tougher. Along with the name change (something Missouri City... more ›

Remember Jim Stevenson, the bird expert accused of shooting a cat to death at San Luis Pass last week? He hasn't admitted that he shot the cat, but the Chronicle reports today that the incident apparently wouldn't be that unusual for Stevenson, who claims to have shot dozens of cats after building his home on Galveston Island in the late 1990s. The anti-cat manifesto came in a 1999 Internet posting: more ›
