So there's a lot for school officials to worry about these days: drugs, gangs, arson, sexual assault — and writing stupid graffiti on gym walls. Don't believe those are all in the same category? Just ask Shelby Sendelbach, the 12-year-old Mayde Creek Junior High student who was sent to an alternative campus through Dec. 31 for writing "I love Alex" in blue marker on a gymnasium wall. You hear that, Alex? She's willing to...

Jurors heard opening arguments yesterday in the murder trial of Ashley Benton, the girl accused of stabbing a 14-year-old gang member to death at Chew Park near Montrose last summer. Benton — who was 16 at the time — was involved with the Crazy Crew gang, members of which got into a fight with members of MS-13, the gang with which Granillo was affiliated. Benton's defense attorneys told jurors Monday that she stabbed Granillo in...

Good morning, Houston. It's June 5 — does that date mean anything to you? It should: Six years ago today, Tropical Storm Allison made landfall on the upper Texas coast, bringing with it more than 40 inches of rain in some areas (and all the flooding that went with it). When all was said and done, the damages totaled $5.5 billion, making Allison the most costly tropical storm in U.S. history. Have any memories of that weekend? We know you do — share 'em in the comments.

One person was killed and four others were injured — one critically — during a Southwest Freeway shootout Tuesday that police say might have been triggered by a rivalry between immigrant smuggling gangs. It happened around noon as people in two trucks headed north on the Southwest Freeway began exchanging fire; the two vehicles then exited the freeway, ran a red light and crashed into a car before the occupants jumped out and continued the...

More on yesterday's drive-by shooting at Westbury High School: It might have been gang-related — but probably not in the way you're thinking. The family of 16-year-old Julian Ruiz, the student killed in the incident, told KHOU that they believe he was shot because he refused to join a gang. Ruiz's folks spoke through the ever-present Quanell X:

We thought The Prestige had made our week until we saw The Departed. Scorsese's latest takes on the mean streets of Beantown and soars. Unlike the plodding of The Aviator or the virtuosic bloodbath that was Gangs of New York, this movie is funny as well as stylish, thoughtful as well as violent. Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio are staties (link provided for those who weren't lucky enough to grow up in the Boston area)....

During a campaign stop in Houston yesterday, Gov. Rick Perry announced his plan for fighting crime in Houston: a $10 million effort to coordinate law enforcement efforts among more than 100 agencies in Harris, Fort Bend, Brazoria and Galveston counties. The joint operations and intelligence center will put more police officers on the streets, improve local agencies' technology and better link state and local intelligence. "We will not stand idly by as our innocent citizens...

The Chronicle checks in today on a slew of city ordinances that seem to be going largely — or totally — unenforced, including a ban put into effect last year on "pocket bikes," quick little motorcycles that councilmembers said were a nuisance and a hazard. Though riding the cycles on public streets was already illegal, City Council spent three meetings and hours of debate before passing an ordinance banning them in May 2005, a move...

We're admittedly still sick over this story about a 14-year-old boy allegedly stabbed and beaten to death by a female member of a rival gang, 15, in a Montrose park.

A teenage boy was beaten and stabbed to death yesterday afternoon at a Montrose-area park in what police say was a gang turf war. It happened at about 2:40 p.m. at Ervan Chew Park at Dunlavy and Norfolk, where a group of teens were playing basketball. More than a dozen other teens showed up and attacked the first group with baseball bats, tire irons, bricks and golf clubs. The two groups were rival gangs, police said.
