Yes, Houston - The Black Godfather is gracing us with his presence this Friday night!!! Houston's own, The Allen Oldies Band will be backin' up Andre Williams at the Continental Club and the show begins at 10 p.m. You don't know who he is? We'll hook you up. A ladie's man from way back, Andre was born in Bessemer, Alabama in 1936 and eventually ended up in Detroit, where he recorded over 50 songs for Fortune Records. He has worked for Barry Gordy and produced records for Stevie Wonder and Ike and Tina Turner. In addition to his own songs, he has written material for George Clinton's Funkadelic. Now, Chi-Town is where he makes his home. Some of his material includes "Shake A Tailfeather", "Bacon Fat", "JailBait" and "Pass the Biscuits". As if this weren't intriguing enough, you really need to see "raunch rock" for yourself, so head on over to the Continental Club for some serious good times tomorrow night.

Saturday marks the "piece de resistance" of Art Car Weekend - The Art Car Parade! Houstonist is singing "I Love a Parade" in our very best Ethel Merman voice in celebration of this event (normally, we stick to "There's No Business Like Show Business"). The world's largest and oldest parade of its kind makes its way into downtown on Allen Parkway for the 20th year to an anticipated crowd of over 200,000 people. This year's...
Last week, we spotlighted George Clinton, the iFest headliner from this past weekend. So, why not do it again with this weekend’s headliner – Lucinda Williams. Born in Lake Charles, Lucinda is no stranger to Houston, spending her early years playing at clubs and honky-tonks around the area. Her first album came out 28 years ago, but it wasn’t until the late 80’s when she started to receive critical acclaim and had others singing...
With all that went down this week, we thought we thought we'd cheer everyone up by giving everyone a double dose of dogs. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions this week at DCist. Like the rest of country, we were floored by the news of so many dead coming out of Virginia Tech, and with so many of the victims and their relatives from the D.C. area, we felt it important to pay...
Looking for something to do this weekend? Look no further than, well, just keep looking at what your reading. Two great festivals begin this weekend, and both continue next weekend. Lucky you. Double your pleasure, double the fun. Houston International Festival: iFest Spotlights China Sorry if you missed the Houstonist ticket giveaway, we are all out. But you can still see some of the greatest acts visiting Houston this year for only $10. A steal!...
Since George Clinton is headlining this weekend's International Festival downtown, we thought we'd feature one of his videos. At first, we thought about uploading one of his Parliament/Funkadelic live performances from the 70's, but the quality isn't that great. Then, we took our brains on a trip back to grade school (as if our brain isn't always there, anyway) and remembered how much we loved his first solo outing, the #1 R&B hit from...
Ah ... Spring is in the air. With spring comes festival season! The International Festival begins its two-weekend stint on Saturday, bringing a wide range of musicians. This weekend, George Clinton headlines, but you can also catch Ruthie Foster, Grupo Fantasma, and more. Another annual tradition (well, a 14 year tradition) is Buzzfest sponsored by 94.5 KTBZ. This year's line-up for the rock station (notice that we didn't say "alternative?" -- there's a reason...
This year's music line-up for April's International Festival has been announced. It includes some alt.country, funk, blues, reggae, folk, cajun, and traditional African music. So what's this year's theme? You guessed it: China. Actually, the folks at iFest are good about booking a diverse array of musicians, no matter what the theme is. This year's headliner is one of our favorite singer/songwriters from the south: Lucinda Williams. 54 year-old Williams just released her first album...
More bad news for Tom Delay (R-Sugar Land)… it seems that if he ran for election today, he’d lose to an unknown Democrat. The question was: If Tom DeLay runs for re-election in 2006, in general, are you more likely to vote for the Republican candidate Tom DeLay or for the Democratic Party's candidate for Congress? Tom DeLay: 36% The Democrat: 49% Voters' Opinion of Tom DeLay: Favorable: 37% Unfavorable: 52% Unfamiliar: 11% Of course,...
