Every week or so, Houstonist provides a rundown of what the Blogs are saying about our city's sports teams. Here's what we found this week: -Jeff Bagwell's life isn't all San Diego sun and jersey retirements. He's still working as a special assistant to Tim Purpura. He was recently in Lexington, KY to check out the Astros A-ball affiliate. Obviously, this was big news in Lexington. -The Texans have shown some interest in A&M and...
Houston, it's time for the annual "Big Show" at the O'Quinn Gallery of Lawndale Art Center. Tonight and tomorrow night, beginning at 7:00 p.m. - and totally free to the public (the second best four-letter "F" bomb - FREE! We are partial to "Fart", too) the Big Slide Show is taking place. Now, what in the wide world of art-y and cultural-like stuff is this? Well, let us do some 'splaining to you, care of...
If you're anything like us, you're probably waist deep into fantasy football magazines, watching ESPN's "Sportscenter" five times a day to catch the latest NFL training camp updates, and surfing the Internet until the wee hours of the morning to find out how that starting running back's knee is holding up to the rigors of two-a-days. No, it's just us? Either way, the dawn of a new NFL season brings with it another year of...
The Astros 2007 free-fall continued at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday as they dropped their 10th consecutive loss by losing to the Reds 4-3. The Reds attacked Wandy Rodriguez (2-5) for three first inning earned runs that would put the Astros anemic offense against the wall. Reds center fielder Norris Hopper got the game started on a lead off double and then scored on Alex Gonzalez's single for the 1-0 lead. Ken Griffey Jr....
A former golf pro in Kingwood and Clear Lake was stabbed to death while on a business assignment in Florida on Thursday — and his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend have been charged in the murder. It happened at an apartment complex in South Lakeland, Fla., where 31-year-old Colin Zieler had been living for a month; the former girlfriend, 26-year-old Heizel Beatriz Gonzalez-Martinez, is charged with being an accessory to murder and her boyfriend, 25-year-old...
Good morning, Houston. Can Texas gas prices get any higher? Well, sure — they increased for the 15th straight week last week, and now they're edging toward the previous record high. The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded in Texas last week was $2.952, just 1.2 cents short of the previous record, $2.964, which we hit after Hurricane Rita in September 2005. Houston's average price is $2.92, still lower than most major...
Wednesday morning HPD raided the Silve Trading Post, a Houston building supply retailer known as "Little Home Depot." Although owner Bernie Gonzalez has maintained that everything about her business is legal, she is suspected of selling stolen materials and running the biggest dealer in the city's building supplies black market. When pressed on the issue, Gonzalez said that she believes the materials that are delivered to her and then sold aren't stolen, they're just leftovers.
Good morning, Houston! Looks like we're far from the only people enjoying the bliss that is freedom from telemarketers: According to the AP, almost 25 million phone numbers were added to the federal do not call list in fiscal 2006, bringing the total ... uh ... number of numbers on the list to 132 million. And amazingly enough, it's working: The percentage of complaints last year was small, and the FTC has taken enforcement...
Good morning, Houston. Do you feel more metropolitan? Or bigger, maybe? According to estimates released by the Census Bureau yesterday, the influx of hurricane evacuees has made the Houston metro area the country's sixth largest. The Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area now has an estimated 5,483,857 residents, which puts it ahead of Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Miami Beach but still behind the New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth and Philadelphia metro areas. Another population fact: Harris County...
More on the deaths of Leon and Maurine Roberson, the couple who were killed Oct. 18 when a speeding wrecker driver broadsided their car: Assistant Harris County DA Warren Diepraam says the wrecker driver, Sergio Gonzalez, had cocaine in his system at the time of the crash. Gonzalez hit the Robersons' car as they left church in the 11800 block of Wallisville Road; according to reports, Gonzalez was going 20 or 25 mph above the...
Nearly two weeks after a speeding wrecker killed an elderly couple leaving a Bible study, the city has decided to tighten the rules governing how wrecker drivers are licensed under the Safe Clear program, Mayor Bill White announced yesterday. Among the changes in the process is a more stringent appeals process for wrecker drivers who are denied licenses. A retired HPD assistant chief will now preside over appeals (a sergeant did so before), and documentation...
Let's take a look back at a week that raised this Zen koan: if Kevin Federline got into a wrestling ring with a wrestler, who would you root for? Austinist was in an entertainment state of mind as they covered the dickens out of the Austin Film Festival, depicted all the Big 12 football coaches as South Park characters, and interviewed Jose Gonzalez. Chicagoist talked about the passion as they bid adieu to Bell...
Tuesday You don’t hear about the verbal fights between Noel & Liam Gallagher as much these days, but we’re sure there’s still in-fighting within Oasis. The venue needs to take VH1’s lead and setup a closed-caption screen so we can understand their deep bloody accents. The Redwalls open. Video: “Thank You” (The Redwalls) 8 p.m. at Verizon Wireless Theater | tickets and info Wednesday Cheryl Wheeler is a true folk singer/songwriter, mixing in the...
More news from Houston's ongoing effort to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of equality and harmony: It looks like an arbitrator's decision on the city's dueling MLK Day parades is setting off yet another fight. We thought this year's joint parade between the Black Heritage Society and the March For Freedom Foundation — the first in years — might be the first step toward some kind of agreement, but the day after the parade,...
When Houstonist missed Dave Chappelle's Block Party Tour last week at the Verizon, we had no idea we were actually missing one of the year's most inexplicable two-fer events. Yes, everyone's favorite congresswoman joined the comedian on stage for no apparent reason — we don't even know if there were any TV cameras around. The news comes to us from the Houston Press, which tells the story better than we could: Just before intermission, Chappelle...
Well, it's official: Houston's new soccer team will be called Houston 1836. The name was one of 13 choices in a "Name the Team" sweepstakes held earlier this year, but it's not clear whether Houston 1836 won the public vote. 1836, as well-informed Houstonist readers know, was the year the Allen brothers founded Houston on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. But the historical reference seems to be eluding many people, as the Chronicle noted today:...
