Good morning, Houston. Are you a local news junkie? Do you already know all the headlines we're covering here? If so, we'd love to have you: Houstonist is looking to build its news staff, and you're invited. You should keep up with what's going on in and around Houston and be able to put up a couple of posts a week, at least; some background in journalism is always a plus. If it sounds... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Have you ever wondered why our freeways have multiple names — for example, I-45 south of downtown is also called the Gulf Freeway, the section through downtown is the Pierce Elevated and the part north of downtown is the North Freeway? Yeah, we have, too — and it seems we're not alone: The Chronicle's Tex-Arcana column tackled that question this weekend. The answer? In Houston, at least, the names tell where... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Imagine it: a penthouse apartment in the Galleria area, complete with your own personal dome. Nice — and did we mention it's free? Or at least it is for one guy who's been squatting in the attic of an Uptown business: According to KTRK, he's set up a pretty sweet pad, with cable, a flat-screen TV, surround sound, air conditioning and a bathroom. It's a pretty sweet deal for the guy,... more ›

Breaking news: it's raining. A lot. So if you were schedule to appear in court today, here's this tidbit from the good ol' CoH: The City of Houston Municipal Courts remain open today, Thursday, August 16, 2007, however, those individuals who are scheduled to appear in court and are unable to make their court appearance due to inclement weather, will be given the opportunity to reset their case (s). Resets will be given in... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Time for the results of another sex study: This one, from two UT-Austin psychologists, looked at the reasons people have sex. No. 1 on the list, as you'd expect, was attraction — but there's more to it than that. Among the 237 reasons Cindy Meston and David Buss cataloged: "It seemed like good exercise." "The person was a good dancer." "To get rid of a headache." And perhaps most odd: "I... more ›

If only everyone were as frank as David McLemore, the La Marque man who was pulled over for driving erratically on the Gulf Freeway on Wednesday morning — well, honestly, we're not sure where we'd be. See, McLemore was weaving through traffic while rolling a joint, and when the police pulled him over, he told them so. It happened just before 7 a.m. Wednesday when Gilberto Villareal, a Galveston County sheriff's deputy, noticed McLemore's car... more ›

Good morning, Houston. You know what today is, right? It's the day before what's apparently the most important book in the history of the world, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is released. If you're a Harryhead and a fan of Katy, our neighbor to the west, you should be delighted to know that Katy has been named the "Harryest" town in Texas — the distinction that goes to the town that pre-ordered the... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Does all this rain make you feel like crap? There may be a medical reason: It's called non-allergic rhinitis, and it can be triggered by changes in air pressure — you know, the kind that accompany bad weather. Rhinitis symptoms are a lot like those that come with allergies: congestion, sinus pressure and post-nasal drip. Decongestants, saline washes and nasal sprays can help, but the only thing that'll really make you... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Were you one of the folks who lined up Friday to pick up an iPhone? And have you gotten it activated yet? If so, you're lucky: A lot of people are having trouble getting their shiny new toys activated, and until they do, none of the so-called Jesus phone's features — not even its alarm clock — will work. Though most customers have been able to activate their phones in a... more ›

Good morning, Houston. So, did you hear about the calf that ran loose along the Gulf Freeway feeder road near Clear Lake City Boulevard yesterday? As if there aren't enough things causing traffic on our freeways, you know? The calf apparently got loose through a hole in a fence, and it wandered along the feeder for nearly an hour and a half, eluding its would-be captors until it slipped back through the hole where... more ›

Good morning, Houston. We don't mind telling you that we really have no love for cockroaches, but we do have a little bit more appreciation for the little critters after reading the Chronicle's interview with the Houston Museum of Natural Science's curator of entomology, Nancy Greig. "They're neat," Greig said. "Only 12 out of 4,000 are pests." Ah, well, good. But why are those 12 always in our apartment? >> Perry: We need more... more ›

We talked last week about Jeff Blessing, the man who crashed while riding his motorcycle up the Gulf Freeway last month and was likely saved from being run over by a mystery trucker who used his vehicle to block traffic from the lane where Blessing lay, unconscious. Last week, Blessing was looking for that trucker, who left the scene before anyone got his name — and yesterday, the two men finally met. The good Samaritan's... more ›

A couple of Fridays ago, Jeff Blessing was riding his motorcycle up the Gulf Freeway when a car in traffic near him slowed down or swerved after being hit by a loose tire. Blessing hit the car and was thrown off his motorcycle and into the middle of the freeway's northbound lanes, unconscious. It's a situation from which you wouldn't expect a person to escape alive — but Blessing did, thanks to a big-rig driver... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Are you planning on taking a summer vacation? Here's something to consider, if you are: Continental, along with several other airlines, raised their fares in 30% of the top U.S. markets this week. Some one-way fares are up $10, some $5, and some remain the same. This was a relatively small increase, but will still hit the wallets of summer vactioners. With airfare increasing and gas prices so high, how about... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Thanks to everyone who joined us at Kay's last night for the happy hour — and those of you who missed it, we expect to see you next time. Now, go read some news, Our head hurts. >> Turns out it wasn't a foolproof plan after all: Police are on the lookout for Continental Express flight attendant Vivian Fragoza and her husband after Fragoza allegedly used Continental "buddy miles" to fly... more ›

The Chronicle's Matt Stiles brings us the locations of the city's 10 newest red-light cameras, a couple of which we had already noticed — while lawfully stopping at red lights, we might add. And here they are: Northbound Wayside at Gulf Freeway Northbound Woodridge at Gulf Freeway Northbound West Bellfort at Southwest Freeway Northbound Fairbanks N. Houston at Northwest Freeway Northbound West Sam Houston Parkway South at Westpark Eastbound FM 2351 at Gulf Freeway Eastbound... more ›

Good morning, Houston. As faithful Houstonist readers, you know we have trouble resisting a good crime report, so we were nearly beside ourselves when we read about the family that might have set a grocery store potato chip display on fire in February. Seriously. It happened at a Sellers Brothers on Telephone Road on Feb. 10, and surveillance video — which you can see if you follow the link — shows a young man... more ›

Good morning, Houston. According to a government report released yesterday, the national average price for a gallon of gas rose to $2.876 last week, up 7.4 cents over last week. Bad news, eh? But here's something good: A gallon of gas is, in general, a lot cheaper than that in Houston. Not that it's cheap or anything — according to reports, it'll cost you anywhere from $2.59 to $2.99 here. Looks like we might... more ›

Good morning, Houston. We don't know about you, but we at Houstonist have long been fans of Willie Nelson. And so, apparently, has local rapper/promoter/jeweler Paul Wall: Wall tells MTV News that he booked time at Nelson's studio to record his new album, Get Money, Stay True because he thought he would run into the Red-Headed Stranger while he was there — but alas, there was no Willie for Wall. "I didn't get a... more ›

Considering how much some Texans love their guns, it's surprising that we don't hear about accidental self-shootings more often than we do. But really, you can go for months without a single incident, and then bam — or, we suppose, bang — you get a really good one. The incident in question happened yesterday afternoon at Gay Pontiac on the Gulf Freeway in Dickinson. The victim: an off-duty Harris County Sheriff's Office reserve major and... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Did you enjoy a big oyster dinner over the weekend? Might want to stay close to the toilet: The FDA is advising people to steer clear of oysters from San Antonio Bay, about 60 miles northeast of Corpus Christi, after more than two dozen people became ill from eating them last month. The people developed nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other nasty symptoms; the oyster bed has been shut down pending an... more ›

Good morning, Houston! Sure, you might have had some bad experiences on the bus when you were in school, but we're willing to bet your bus driver never passed out at the wheel like one did in Magnolia yesterday. The driver had just dropped a student off on FM 1488 when she passed out; fortunately, a 9-year-old passenger called 911 on his cell phone and got help. Looks like the driver had a heart... more ›

The Chronicle reported yesterday on a proposal to revive passenger train service between Houston and Galveston — an idea that could become reality in five years, according to a study group. A commuter rail line alongside the Gulf Freeway would (theoretically, at least) become popular with commuters, cut down on freeway traffic and provide a vital evacuation link in case a hurricane threatened Galveston. "It has all the elements that would make it eminently... more ›

Ten more red-light cameras have gone online around the city, many of them — like in the last group to begin operating — along the Southwest Freeway. The locations of the new cameras are: West Loop at San Felipe (east frontage road) Southwest Freeway at Bellaire (west frontage road) Bissonnet westbound at Southwest Freeway east frontage road Southwest Freeway at Beechnut (east frontage road) Southwest Freeway at Fondren (east frontage road) Chartres northbound at... more ›

The Houston Astros are cranking up their public relations machine as part of Major League Baseball's annual Caravan program. Members of the Astros organization, i.e. players (Ausmus, Bagwell & Roy O.), coaches and staff (Milo Hamilton), will be visiting Houston's surrounding areas and parts of Central Texas over the next two weeks. They even squeezed in a casino trip to Lake Charles and a jaunt down south to Monterrey Mexico. So, now's your chance to... more ›

Yes, it's Halloween today — but that doesn't mean trickery wasn't afoot yesterday, too. Take, for example, the case of a car battery that masqueraded as a ... uh ... a ... well, something on the Gulf Freeway early in the afternoon rush hour: What turned out to be a car battery in the Gulf Freeway caused a brief shutdown of all southbound lanes at Scott during today's afternoon rush. The lanes were closed from... more ›
