Houstonist has an active and amazing Flickr photo group. We receive many, many photos of Houston and the surrounding areas every day and unless you are an active visitor to our photo pool many of these photos go unnoticed. So in a weekly effort to bring you more amazing photos from Houstonist readers and photographers, we are going to feature a block of photos submitted to our Flickr photo group. The images will be dug......

Every so often we're too lazy to read every MC there's a Missed Connection that stands out from the crowd. This is one of those so oftens. just a kiss... - w4m I’m a girl. (or woman, what have you) I’m in my mid 20s. I am polite, respectful, well spoken, intelligent, from a great family, and very independent But it occurred to me a few weeks ago that I can’t remember the last......

Football on a Thursday? Does this mean we have to skip 30 Rock? Damn, this is a hard decision. Gary Kubiak vs. Jack Donaghy. Sage Rosenfels vs. Judah Freidlander. Texans Cheerleaders vs. our completely defensible crush on Tina Fey. Tracy Jordan vs. Travis Henry's illegitmate children. Mike Shannahan's hair vs. the Sheinhart Wig Company. Who are we kidding? You can watch 30 Rock any time on NBC's website. It's like Tivo for poor people! The......

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. I just saw a commercial for a cereal, I think it was Total, that used a Canned Heat song as the background ditty. It really bothered me for some reason, and I'm not sure why. -- Abbie H., Chicago Though you didn't really ask a question, Abbie, I get your drift. The growing number of 60s rock songs in TV commercials right now......

Cara Barer—The Book Project DeSantos Gallery Beginning with just a found soiled copy of the Yellow Pages, Cara Barer created The Book Project, and eventually had volumes of new sculptures resulting from old books. As book lovers, our first inclination was to scoff at the idea of destroying old books for the sake of art. But then we saw the sculptures. This is one of the Houstonist's favoritist things we've seen in a long time.......

Good morning, Houston. Seriously, what is it with North Texas these days? Yesterday we had the story of the 18-wheeler full of human heads, and today there's the Fort Worth man who accidentally shot himself in both legs in his cubicle at work. According to police, the 47-year-old man put his .45-caliber gun into his jacket pocket Tuesday morning, then draped his jacket over the back of his chair at an insurance office. When......

The Red Sox has permeated nearly every facet of Bostonist's lives. When they're not live-blogging the games, waxing poetic about the games, thanking Curt Schilling for his splendid work, or telling Dane Cook to watch his hair, they're watching certain presidential candidates hop on the Red Sox bandwagon (sorry, Gothamist). The Sox are so branded on the local brain that people are using the Series to spice up their sex lives. Speaking of spice, Bostonist......

Good morning, Houston. Here's one of those things that ended up selling for much more than we would have expected: A Rosenberg man bought a lock of Che Guevara's hair yesterday for $100,000. Bill Butler, a bookstore owner, was the only bidder; he said he collects items from the 1960s and that the hair will fit in well. "A lot of his writings are still worth reading today," Butler said of Guevara. Gustavo Villodo,......

Lots of CDs are released week after week. And though we unwisely spend a bulk of our disposable income on music, Houstonist understands that you work hard for the money, honey! So every Tuesday, we'll bring you a list of CDs that we think will give you the most bang for your buck. Ryan Adams and his band the Cardinals release an EP called Follow the Lights today, just months after the acclaimed full-length Easy......

Good morning, Houston. Time to flex your democratic muscle again: Early voting begins today for the Nov. 6 election. You can check out a map of early voting locations here and get more information on where and how to vote from the Harris County elections website — so now, you can't say you haven't been informed. See you at the polls! >> For some, a flood of bad news: If you're a property owner......

Mother Nature has been teasing us – toying with us even. Here it is, late October and nary a sweater touched, a wool sock adorned, a scarf wrapped. The hair is still frizzy and the a/c continues to crank. But, by golly, the optimist in us has gone into full-fledged autumn-mode: dining al fresco. Every year, about this time of year, Houstonist wills the weather to get cooler by changing our dining strategy to all-al-fresco-all-the-time.......

Chivalry lives in Houston and meanness does, too. But, that doesn't mean that meatheads aren't seeking stupid chicks. And, stupid dudes are hot for savvy chicks. However, bitches need not apply nor do "asshats." Here's a few more that we found interesting. Houstonist's 'Heart of Gold' is a regular feature that gives a little love to the people that make a difference. Yes, we randomly get that touchy-feely. So sue us. And share your ideas with us too! Because shaving is just so uncharitable, Houston is holding its very first Mustaches For Kids fundraiser event. Didn't think kids needed mustaches did you? Well, think of it like a walkathon where the walking is replaced with facial hair......

Good morning, Houston. If you've ever been to Rich's, the dance club in midtown, you probably won't be surprised to hear that the crowd there Saturday was sporting "feather boas, glittering hair accessories, sparkling dresses and tutus." But exactly who was in the crowd might take you by surprise: It was a bunch of kids there for Baby Loves Disco, part of a national series of dance events that benefit childhood cancer research. (In......

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor darkhairedgirl. Photographer's comments from the flickr page: "She saw me taking these shots and just sat there smoking, chatting on her cellphone with her hair wrapped in that towel acting oblivious. She didn't get up and walk away so I figured she must not have cared that I was shooting her so much." We're glad you got a good shot and......

When Houstonist was a rookie Texan, we once debated a colleague about films that were "quintessentially Texas." Any film set in Texas, filmed in Texas, starring Texans, etc. was eligible. The point was to build a list of movies to watch so that we could figure out the reason for the nauseating levels of Texanism and the fascination of the outside world with the state of Texas. Surely armadillos, oil rigs and interstate were......

This week's output on Missed Connections was much better than last week. But, Houstonist isn't naive enough to think that our bitching about the lack of quality had anything to do with the flood of MCs this week, but it kinda makes feel all warm and fuzzy like when you leave a peach in your glove compartment. Anyway, we're glad that you guys suck at meeting folks; it's entertaining. Some jock wants to suck......

We witnessed a few firsts this week in Missed Connections. First, there was actually an MC at Bally's that doesn't involve two dudes and a steam room. Second, a self-flogging Rice jogger (or yogger) has asked voyeurs to flog themselves. And some lady got upset because a fellow commuter may not have wanted to "shoplift the pootie." Is it just me? - 100 I know we write in a hurry. I know typos are......

Good morning, Houston. In case you haven't noticed, it's finally hot. We've had temperatures in the high 90s so far this week, and coupled with high humidity, they're making it dangerously warm — so much so, in fact, that we were under a heat advisory yesterday. And it looks like today's temperatures will be about the same, so remember to avoid heat exhaustion by drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities in the......

Missed Connections users from both the gay and straight communities rallied around Dewayne from Guava Lamp as he expressed his devotion to the Sound Guy Jose to ward off a persistent suitor. If there's one thing we appreciate about Houston, it's the variety of news that comes from our fair city: uppity preacher's wives, hot, hot mail trucks (and restrooms), giant kidnapped clowns, robbers with bad hair — and even people in Dallas who actually like us. Of course, there's also serious news, too, but you can find that easily enough. We're looking for news junkies who are interested in helping Houstonist expand our original news......

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. How much are you supposed to tip a pizza delivery driver? Assuming you’re ordering only one or two pizzas (and pizza is ALL you’re ordering), $3 to $5 is probably a good estimate. If you ordered out because Houston is experiencing one of its “flood events” and you didn’t want to risk floating down the street in your car, you might consider hooking......

Missed Connections are weird ramblings that seem a better fit for the walls of a bathroom stall. In fact, it seems as if an inordinate amount of MCs occur in bathrooms or locker rooms. That's just creepy kinda like this guy but different. Try to visualize the following MCs written in fat marker print on your favorite stall wall. We think it'll help them seem more normal. Anyone who's been to Crystal Beach knows it can be busy — but is it dangerous? We wouldn't have thought so, but we might have to think again after a woman was found raped and murdered on the beach early Sunday morning. The victim was 28-year-old Bridgette Gearen of Orange, who was visiting friends at a beachhouse near the corner of Crystal Beach and Redfish roads. After they spent Saturday at the beach, the group......

Houstonist is shocked that the naked lady continues to appear to commuters, but we've not seen her yet. In fact, she's now taking requests. The debate clamors on about whether or not she exists. Could it be that this is a hoax to get folks to buy pricier gas? Demands have been made for photographic evidence. Houstonist will fall on this grenade since it is clearly so important to humanity. See you on Friday......

We've covered a few distinctive thieves in the last few months: the cell phone bandit, the bicycle bandit, the dapper bandit, the bad hair bandit — and now there's a new one: the bossy bandit, who was reportedly quite rude when he knocked over a west Houston bank last week. According to FBI officials, the man walked into the Wells Fargo branch on the Katy Freeway near Highway 6 at around 5 p.m. last Tuesday;......

80's hair band Poison is coming to Houston tomorrow night. Believe it or not, they'll be playing at the Sam Houston Race Park tomorrow night after the horse races are over. (We want to call that a career low, but since the track hosted the great Merle Haggard recently, we can't justify that claim.) Poison had a good run of hits from '87 to '92 ("Talk Dirty to Me," "Every Rose Has It's Thorn,"......

In honor of tonight's reunion of The Police, we thought we'd feature one of their classic 80's videos.
