Happy Halloween Houston! It's the one day of the year that we can parade around in our normal frightening visage without fear! Seriously, we love Halloween here at Houstonist, costumes, candy, scaring the crap out of little kids and yelling at teenaged miscreants...while soaking up some liquor and stuff. What is not to love? We tried turning out the porch light several years ago, apparently that's no longer the universal sign for "I GOT NO FREAKIN' CANDY". Thinking that perhaps we need to dust off, er, purchase a new copy of Emily Post or the "Guide to Halloween Etiquette for Dummies", surely that exists. We'll be preparing for the wee goblins, ghouls and princesses listening to the Coogs as they take on Southern Miss at "high noon" tomorrow.

So we figured your elbows may get sore rubbing on all those Sarah Palin-decked out socialites at La Griglia's Annual Halloween Bash (aka Gratuitous Skin Gate 2008) this year, so we've taken it upon ourselves to find you a few maverick alternatives.
We've been seeing Christmas decorations going up around town earlier and earlier every year. This was the first time we could remember seeing green and red before Halloween. Still, retailers must remind people that it's almost time to go into debt in celebration of the birth of Jesus, so that's their right. The Galleria is celebrating the lighting of their huge Christmas tree (and the attendant shopping rush) with a performance by former Olympic skater...
This week saw the usual ho-hum type of Missed Connections with a few Halloween misses thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately, some posts were more depressing than others. Hopefully the following MCs will make you smile. I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW YOU SAY YOU LOVE ME! - w4m - 42 YOU DONT CALL U DONT EMAIL N THEN WHEN YOU DO YOU HAVE NOTHING OF WHT I ASK FOR - ALL I WANT IS THE...
Now that Halloween is over, you’ll start hearing Christmas music everywhere you turn – on the radio, while shopping, and from that annoying singing Santa doll on your cubicle neighbor’s desk. Well, we have a sanctuary for you from Michael Bolton singing “Silent Night”: the "Houstonist iMix. Our picks for November include a track from excellent new CD from now Austin-based Sam Beam, otherwise known as Iron & Wine. The latest from Seattle’s indie-pop Band...
We love seeing local peeps get overdue credit, especially when they are big, orange and furry. That's why we are super stoked that the Houston Zoo made it to Animal Planet's Top 10 Places to Visit Orangutans in North America. Animal Planet says: The Houston Zoo is developing long-term partnerships in Borneo, and with other organizations and zoos, to ensure the survival of these species. Houston Zoo’s support for wildlife conservation initiatives in Malaysian Borneo...

Happy Halloween ghosts and ghouls! There’s a slew of great bands playing in Houston this week before heading up to a certain festival this weekend (hint: ____ ). We’ve got mega-celebs that have their own fragrances wrecking the Toyota Center in English AND Espanol on Wed., we’ve got huge indie bands Spoon and the New Pornographers teaching class on Thurs, and we have the Houstonist pick o’ the week: M.I.A. and Paul Wall on...
Good morning, Houston. Well, uh here's something you don't hear about every day — but it being Halloween and all, we couldn't resist: In Hunt County, police pulled over an 18-wheeler Sunday morning and found about two dozen human heads in the back. True story. But it's not what you think: Turns out the heads (which were embalmed) were specimens used in medical training in Fort Worth, and they were headed back to a...
Britney and Backstreet are back alright, but we’ve got our eye on a few other notable releases this week. However, if you’re still looking for some last minute Halloween costume ideas… We’re really excited about the lovely Nicole Atkins’ latest album, Neptune City. The fact that Atkins’ dramatic low-register voice vaguely reminds us of early Stevie Nicks is merely an added bonus. -Watch the video for the album’s title track on Youtube -Stream the...

The 2 story Victorian home, given to DiverseWorks to use...

Besides, what else are you going to do with all those Jack O'Lantern guts? If you compost them we promise you'll be pulling rogue pumpkins out of...
With Halloween and office holiday party outfit shopping getting closer (although hopefully not one and the same, unless you work for one of "those" kinds of companies) you and your wallet need some quality thrift store shopping time. Apparently our wish is someone's command - Houston's second Buffalo Exchange shop (249 W. 19th St.) is finally open in the Heights! Sure they're tres pricey for a used clothing shop and a teensy bit snooty...

Good morning, Houston. If you've ever thought that Halloween needed a little more, uh, spice, you might want to check out HauntXXX, "Houston's most titillating haunted house." The titillating part apparently has to do with nearly naked women wearing neon body paint — and as for the haunted part, well, we're not so sure (maybe these are some super-scary sexpots we're talking about). The haunted house isn't sitting well with some of its neighbors,...
Monday Night Movies at Domy Books It's Monday. AGAIN. We know, right? Monday already? Yep. Shake off the Monday Blues with a free movie at our fav-o-rite bookstore, Domy Books [1709 Westheimer]. Hey, ho, let's go! Tonight's movie is the teen rebellion classic Rock 'n' Roll High School. Keeping in tune with the teen rebellion flicks of the 50s and 60s, Rock 'n' Roll High School delivers much of the same camp with a 70s...
Londonist are starting to think their city is getting just a little bit too expensive, when even Christian Slater can't afford to go out there. And there's no escaping, as local singer Lily Allen discovered when she was barred entry to the US. The British mapping agency caused further bad karma, by blocking a 3-D representation of London in Google Earth. But the smiles returned to Londonist's faces as they interviewed Baroness von Reichardt,...
Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. Last night, I went out with some friends for a few drinks. Since when has Cinco de Mayo become such a big drinking event? It’s not even a major holiday in Mexico. As long as Dilettante has been aware of Cinco de Mayo, it has been a drinking holiday. But it does seem to be turning into more and more of an excuse...
6:35 p.m. Central Standard Time tonight marks the Winter Solstice, which means the days will begin to grow longer. Tonight is the longest night of the year and can also be the darkest night of the year, depending on the lunar cycle. December's Full Moon, by the way, is referred to as Oak Moon, Cold Moon, Frost Moon, Long Night's Moon or the Moon Before Yule - the last two are associated with the Winter...
Here at Houstonist, we don't get all of our gift purchasing completed by Halloween. Sometimes, we are in the mad rush on Christmas Eve ( Aunt WHO is going to be there? RATS - now, I need another gift!). So, if you are anything at all like us, and are still cramming gifts and tissue paper into those cute little gift bags, wrapping boxes up with bows and realizing you forgot someone important - today and/or tomorrow are the last days to e-shop in time for a Chrismas delivery.
It is officially the holiday season, filling MC posters with so much hope and cheer (or delusions) that they actually believe the person at the check out counter at Walgreens was trying to send them subliminal "I *heart* you" messages when actually they were just staring at the big, green bugger on their faces.
Remember the story of Terressa Vanegas, the Dickinson High School student who disappeared on Halloween and whose body was later found in a field near the high school? The story just got a little weirder: It seems Vanegas' best friend, Kimberlee Ramsey of Bacliff, has been missing for a week and a half.
On Tuesday, the American -ists will be celebrating democracy and hitting the polls, letting politicians know what they really think. It just made us wonder: if it were up to the -ist-a-verse, what would we be voting for? Londonist votes for better skincare, alternative spaces for art, cute little birds and the men who keep them, and concrete. Lots of concrete. Shanghaiist votes for one of the Bee Gees and Air Supply (it's a double-ticket),...
