Good morning, Houston. The Chron's Eric Gerber points out something interesting: a Washington Post story that says people hold onto utterly untrue myths even when they're faced with factual information that disproves them. An example: A University of Michigan psychologist showed people a CDC flyer stating that myths about the flu vaccine aren't true — such as the story that the side effects of the vaccine are worse than the flu itself — and... more ›

The unpopular proposal to double tolls on the Westpark Tollway during rush hour is officially dead: Harris County commissioners officially scrapped the plan Tuesday, meaning the price of the county's toll roads will remain the same — or won't, actually, given that a 25-cent increase on all toll transactions will still take effect on Sept. 3. The Westpark proposal, as we're sure you remember, called for toll transactions to double for inbound traffic between 6... more ›

Well, the peak pricing proposal for the Westpark Tollway died more quickly than we expected: On Thursday, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said the county commissioners will cancel the proposed doubling of Westpark tolls at rush hour, a decision that "was certainly influenced by the public's reaction." Under the proposal, transactions along the Westpark would have doubled from $1.25 (after a general 25-cent increase across the entire county toll road system to $2.50 from 6... more ›

Depending on the outcome of a vote by Harris County Commissioners Court tomorrow, rates on the county's toll road system could increase 25 cents by the end of the summer, the first step in a plan to double tolls over the next 20 years. That means that, by 2027, drivers would pay $2 per EZ Tag transaction and $2.50 per cash transaction on Harris County toll roads — though it's not clear just how that'll affect flying cars, which we completely expect to be in widespread use in 20 years. We guess we'll just have to wait and find out. more ›

Good morning, Houston. We managed to miss this news the other day, but according to CNNMoney.com, Harris County has the sixth most millionaires of any county in the U.S. There are 99,504 millionaire households in Harris County — that's 8.25 percent of all households in the county and 16 percent of the state's millionaire households. Topping the list is Los Angeles County, with a whopping 268,138 millionaire households. And not among the top 10:... more ›

Now Houstonist remembers why we didn't decide to live on the west side: Beginning next week, connector ramps between the Katy Freeway and the Beltway will be closed for months as part of the Katy Freeway reconstruction project. more ›

Start spreading the news: Emirates Airlines has chosen Houston Intercontinental as its second North American destination for direct flights to and from Dubai. Starting in early December, the flight will be Emirate's longest at a comfy 17 solid hours from the UAE to Houston. If you're looking for extremely luxurious living that's only a slightly longer commute than The Woodlands, this could be the beginnings of your next exurb. This news should also come... more ›

So it's after lunch and it's still not icy — yet. To celebrate, officials have reopened some freeway interchanges that were closed yesterday when it looked like all hell would break loose. According to the Harris County Toll Road Authority, the following ramps and bridges are now open: more ›

The county has enlisted new help in catching chronic toll-road abusers: a group of cameras that catch people who owe thousands of dollars in unpaid tolls. The effort is aimed at catching the top 500 non-toll payers, who owe between $2,000 and $30,000 — though anyone with the mettle to rack up $30,000 in unpaid tolls really deserves some kind of award, we think, even if it is given in jail. more ›

The Harris County Toll Road Authority is switching out the old plastic EZ Tag transponders for sleek new stickers — a move that will reduce headaches for the county, but may not sit well with drivers who like being able to move their EZ Tags from vehicle to vehicle. About 150,000 of the old tags have already been replaced with stickers, but that leaves an estimated 850,000 to go. more ›

Once in a while, a story comes along about an incidental fee that's gone horribly wrong — you know, like the one about the poor soul who finds a book his great grandmother forgot to return to the library and ends up being responsible for $1 million in overdue fines. The report about the guy who owes the Harris County Toll Road Authority $9,287 in delinquent tolls isn't quite that extreme, but it'll do. more ›
