::Houston NetSquared Meet Up::

Raise your glass and raise some funds for the HERO project -- a humanitarian campaign of the United Nations Association (USA) dedicated to providing comprehensive, school-based support to orphans and vulnerable children living in HIV/AIDS-affected communities in Africa. All you have to do is show up at New Gallery/Thom Andriola (2627 Colquitt) tomorrow, Wednesday the 12th between 7 and 9PM. Taste some wine, admire the art, and feel good knowing you're doing something for other...

Houstonist had a thought yesterday as we were boarding our 7 AM flight to Dallas for yet another business trip, "This sucks," which got us pining for the way-too-few days sandwiched between our college graduation and our 8-to-8 gig inhabiting cubes around the country. Then a scene from Ben Stiller's 1994 release, Reality Bites, flashed through our head: Winona Ryder's character, LeLaina a.k.a. Lainey, is "show[ing] some ingenuity" by using her dad's gas card to...

Really, it's a typical story: guy and girl go to bar with their various friends, looking to mingle. Guy and girl meet. Guy and girl have drinks. Girl invites guy home to her place to check out her bootleg Top Chef DV--wait, is that part just us? Anyway. When the guy and girl wake up the next morning, it lately seems as if they should get checked for syphilis. The Chronicle reports that Houston's trying...

A musical about Tammy Faye? Topical. Penned by former Chronicle giant Fernando Dovalina and making its Houston premiere tonight? Even better. The Gospel According to Tammy Faye is a two-act musical based on the life of iconic televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker Messner. Dovalina, who spent thirty-two years at the Chron, along with co-writer and former UH classmate JT Buck was granted a long interview with Messner in 2005 in which they discussed her childhood and...

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. The former global AIDS coordinator had to resign from his position this week because it came to light that he hired “escorts.” How do people in power expect any of us to take them seriously when it seems like every week another “leader” is outed for not practicing what they preach? Since when do people in power think they get to live beyond...

This Thursday, Houston restaurants will team up to fight HIV/AIDS by donating one third of all their food sales for the day to AIDS Foundation Houston. Participating restaurants include Barnaby's (try the meatloaf!) Tila's on the Curve (Chicken Mole), Thai Spice, and for those of you who really really want to contribute in a serious way, Cafe Annie. ("C'mon, honey! Let's go eat a fabulously romantic two hundred dollar dinner...it's for a good cause!"). New...

Besides being blustery, today is special because it is World AIDS Day. An estimated 40.3 million people are HIV-positive worldwide, a rise from 2004's 39.4 million. A slew of events are planned in Houston. Among them: noon: World AIDS Day Luncheon at the Corinthian downtown. The luncheon honors Jackson Hicks for his assistance to AIDS services and prevention education. It might be too late to go, but check with Julie Eberly at eberlyj@afhouston.org to...
