So this is kinda cool: Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports are the first airports in the world to have mobile threat containment units — basically, bomb-proof trash cans — that can be used to get suspicious carry-on baggage safely away from passengers without shutting down the airport terminal. The units, which in all fairness bear little resemblance to actual trash cans, are manufactured by the British company Aigis Blast Protection. The circular containers weigh around... more ›

Houston is having one hell of an Arbor Day and you too can be a part of it (you just have to get your hands a little on the dirty side). Arbor Day was established in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska City, Nebraska. It seems that the Nebraska Territory was not readily settled, due to the lack of trees on the tallgrass prairie (the better to build and heat cabins - log cabins, not grass ones). Hey, if free land won't bring in the settlers, something is seriously amiss! Purportedly, over a million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day, then only a one-state event. Word of how cool planting trees really is spread pretty quickly - considering there were no cell phones "back in the day". The tree-planting holiday was celebrated in every state by 1894. more ›

Good morning, Houston! If you leave the house this morning, expect wrecks everywhere — the freezing rain and freezing bridges everyone's been talking about finally hit last night. If we were TV news, we'd have one of those flashy "Winter Storm" graphics and some super-serious music — but we're not, so: >> The ice cometh, man: Basically, here's the situation: It's cold and people are crashing into each other all over the city. Road... more ›

Police have arrested five men in connection with the theft of dozens of pieces of luggage from Bush Intercontinental Airport — and they say it was all an inside job. The five men worked for Menzies Aviation Group, a British company that provides luggage handling and ground services for Bush and several other U.S. airports, so they were in an ideal position to pick off a few bags here and there. "These were not stolen from the terminals," Capt. Rick Bownds with HPD's airport division said. "They were stolen as they were making connections through secure sections of the airport." more ›

Local security personnel at Hobby and Bush Intercontinental airports will be trained to screen passengers by watching their behavior and facial expressions, the Chronicle reports — though the program may already be in place at one of the airports. The screening is part of a federal program called Screening Passengers by Observation Techniques (that's a bland name, sure, but the acronym is SPOT, which must have pleazed dozens of people in Washington), which was... more ›

KTRK is reporting that three Continental Airlines employees are being treated after being exposed to fumes coming from the cargo hold of an airplane at Bush Intercontinental Airport's Terminal C. Here's the story: The Continental employees were on a ramp to a plane shortly before 9:00am Friday when they suffered eye irritation from vapors coming out of a bag or box. The three workers were taken to a local clinic for medical treatment. HFD HazMat... more ›

If you've been anywhere around a news outlet this morning, we're sure you've heard about the foiled plot to blow up several U.S.-bound jets And if you haven't, go ahead and take a few minutes to check the story out — we have the feeling air travel is about to get more complicated again. In short, the national aviation threat level has jumped to red, meaning people traveling by plane anytime soon will need to... more ›

Remember the flap over who was responsible for stopping a suspicious passenger at Hobby Airport? Well, the TSA and HPD aren't the only ones taking about it: The passenger, Mohamed Ahwar Bataineh, said he lost his job and was unfairly put on a terrorist watch list. Bataineh, a 31-year-old Jordanian, was on his way to Atlanta for a truck-driving job June 26 and was stopped at a security checkpoint at Hobby, the TSA said, because... more ›

What a crazy place this Internet is. A few weeks ago, we talked about how the Houston Airport System's website sent people to a porn site for a while, and now a local car dealership is suing a company they claim co-opted its online presence for porn. more ›

So if you happened to visit the Houston Airport System's website yesterday, you would have been in for a surprise: For a few hours, visitors to the airport site were mysteriously redirected to an adult website. more ›

So if you fly out of Hobby Airport often, you might want to take note of the $3 fee on each ticket you might have to start paying later this year. It's a charge City Council approved yesterday to put the burden of extreme budget overruns off on the traveling public. Yep, that's right: You, too, will have the privilege of helping finance the Hobby renovation and expansion project. more ›

The Houston Airport System is working out a contract for shared-ride airport shuttles that would cost about half as much as a taxi ride and would let you get to the airport while leaving your car at home. It's not a new concept — more than 50 of the country's 67 largest airports offer similar services, including those in Dallas and Austin — but for some reason it's never been introduced in Houston. more ›

Passengers at Hobby Airport were delayed for an hour this morning when security personnel decided to double-check a piece of screened baggage. A female passenger went through security and had her luggage X-rayed, but "shortly after that, they wanted to take another look," spokesman Richard Fernandez told the Chronicle. Officers decided the luggage wasn't a threat and Fernandez stressed that the woman didn't do anything wrong. more ›

Terminal B at Bush Intercontinental Airport had to be shut down for an hour and a half today after a woman bypassed a security checkpoint. The woman, whose name wasn't released, went through security once and made it into the secure section of the airport reserved for passengers with tickets. She then left the secure area and returned, but didn't go through the security point again. more ›
