::Your Beat is Nice Tuesday::

The Texans and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo publicly stated opposition to the proposed redevelopment of the Astrodome into a hotel and convention center. Giving the reason that it would have negative effects on the Texans and the HLSR, spokesfolks didn't actually release details yet to back it up. Since the Astros' abandonment of the Astrodome, it has been tough to try to agree and finance good uses for it year-round. The hotel and...

Native Houstonian Sam Jones IV may not have a traditional route as to how he got his start in art, but it's definitely a unique story. The mixed media artist sat down and talked with us about his experiences growing up in Houston, and how living in the South has impacted his artistic career. You have a pretty "uniquely-Houston" story as to how you got your start in your art education. Most people don't...

If you didn't like the idea of our beloved Astrodome becoming a fancy hotel, then you won't be happy that a hotel plan is still in the works. The difference this time around, though, is that the new convention hotel will not incorporate the "historic" Texas themes which could have included an Alamo facade, faux courthouse, and a bunch of other corny things. The new plan, which doesn't yet have detailed renderings, opts for a...

Houstonist joined over 70,000 rodeo fans and rock music lovers in Reliant Stadium last night for the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo finale. This wasn't our first Houston Rodeo, but it was the first time Houstonist had attended with a rodeo nut. We were skeptical about arriving at 10:45 AM on a day when the main events did not commence until 3:45 PM. How were we to occupy our time until the stadium opened? Team...

Good morning, Houston. If there's one robot we've always been crazy about, it's the lovable R2-D2, veteran of all six Star Wars movies. And we're not the only people who like the little guy: This month, about 400 public mailboxes will be covered to look like R2-D2 to coincide with the release of a stamp marking the 30th anniversary of the original Star Wars. The USPS has even rolled out a flashy website as...

Pat Green was chastised early for mocking other Texas country artists, most specifically Robert Earl Keen, but he accomplished a feat that those other musicians weren’t able to do – he broke into mainstream country nationally. This is the song that took him from Texas country music star to national hit-maker. Green’s popularity rose in the late 90’s, becoming a favorite in college towns and frat parties all over Texas. While his mentor, Robert...

Good morning, Houston. Even if you don't have a pizza pan with the Virgin Mary's silhouette on it, don't despair: You could still own a half-liter bottle of holy drinking water. The water is being marketed by a man in Stockton, Calif., who has the liquid blessed by Catholic and Anglican priests with plans to expand the line to other faiths as well. One warning: The water's label carries the note that sinners who...

Thousands are hitting the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo cook-off this weekend, and even more will be hitting Reliant Stadium on Tuesday when the event officially kicks off. Like he's done several other years, George Strait is the headlining act at the rodeo's opener. George Strait has been the most consistent hit-maker in country radio for the past 25 years. He has survived country music's ever-changing landscape by sticking to his own "no frills"...

The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is just days away, but the trail riders are pulling into town tomorrow. The HLSR Trail Ride began in 1952 as a publicity stunt with four cowboys. HLSR 2007 features 13 groups consisting of thousands of riders with some traveling hundreds of miles in the saddle. Those of you who like the cowboy way (no, not the crappy movie) should be able to catch an eyeful of traditional...

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to feature Food & Wine Extravaganza at Astrodome As Rodeo season approaches, and Houstonist pulls out our stiffest Stetsons, rugged Justin boots and tightest Wranglers, we look forward to an event that doesn't require carefully avoiding cow patties. And we're not talking burgers. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo international wine and food tasting extravaganza, Rodeo Uncorked! Roundup and Best Bites Competition, is back for 2007 and is set...

Back in November, we gave you a sneak peak at some of the entertainers that were lined up for the 2007 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Today, the full line-up has been announced. It looks like the committee decided to stick with the devil they know, instead of finding fresh acts. The only performers making their rodeo debut are Los Lonely Boys, KEM, Josh Turner, Pesado, Sugarland, The Cheetah Girls and Hannah Montana. Sheryl Crow...

If you like country music, or sparkly cowboy hats, or large, snorting animals, you're probably like us and can't wait for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. This year, which marks the 75th anniversary of the Rodeo, a total purse of 1.275 million dollars will end up in competitors pockets, making this the biggest-paying event of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's regular season. Rodeo officials have also announced four of the performers for this year's...

The Astrodome has been home to many things. It bore witness to the highs and lows of the Oilers and Astros. It has been credited with helping to change the face of men's college basketball and March Madness. People roped dogies, jumped over cars on motorcycles, cheered on Ronald Reagan and promised to kick things in on the floor of the Eighth Wonder of the World. More recently, it has sheltered evacuees during Hurricane Katrina...

If you've dried off from the soggy fourth of July, and are ready to venture out again, here's a few ideas this week from your friendly Houstonist buddies.... Friday, July 7 The Talento Bilengue de Houston, a Latino arts and cultural center, continues it's Summer First Film Fridays series, an ongoing showing of independent films by and about Latinos. The current offering is "Harvest of Redemption", based on a true story of a boy in...

Well the 2006 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo may be over, but don't start crying just yet. Another successful showing was made on all fronts with revenues up and attendance down, but the kids, not the vendors, are the real winners. While attendance records were being broken at the rodeo this year, sales were also hitting highs with eight junior market show animals sold for record prices, bringing in nearly $1 million more than last year and adding 11% more to the HLS&R's education fund.

After Sheryl Crow had to cancel her Rodeo appearance this year due to breast cancer surgery, she was quickly replaced with breast cancer survivor Melissa Etheridge. Now Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo officials are encouraging everyone to “Paint the Rodeo Pink” in support of breast cancer awareness. “Wear pink — anything pink — on March 2, whether you’re coming out to the Show or not,” said Skip Wagner, HLS&R president. Houstonist's growing female staff doesn't...

Despite what Houstonist's out-of-town friends seem to think, there's really only one time of the year when you're likely to run into people around town dressed as cowboys or get stuck behind a wagon train on the freeway. It's Rodeo time, of course — and though we're all familiar with the world's biggest cow-and-pony show, how much do we really know? Amaze your friends with the following Rodeo facts and figures: The Houston Fat...

Everyone knows about the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Thousands of less than full, but slightly inebriated, gather around picnic tables like Black Angus to get a taste of …slow cooked Black Angus. Yum. What most forget about, as they lean back and unbutton their top buttons, is to save room for the wine. After the rib bones and napkins have been shoveled, the corks will be popped at...

"Grow beards, wear big hats, boots and spurs. Let's put a little touch of the Wild West into this thing." Those are the first quoted words to establish what can only be described as the "flavor" of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. In their honor, tomorrow — Friday, Feb. 24 — is the day that we celebrate Texan pride and spirit. Go Texan Day was established in 1954 and we see no need to...

It's rodeo time again — the one weekend in the year when we can gorge ourselves on barbecue and beer, then head across the Astrodome parking lot for a spin on the Tilt-a-Whirl. (Wait, the one weekend? We take that back — that's pretty much a weekly activity for Houstonist.) So here's what's happening this weekend at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo: Thursday • World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest: 5 to 11 p.m. at Reliant...
