Although there's no snow in the forecast this week, we're still experiencing some true Christmas weather today. And what better way to take advantage of that (while it lasts!) than heading down to Discovery Green and enjoying the ice rink on a chilly night beneath the glittering lights of downtown Houston?

Last week we told you about the fantastic ice skating venue being constructed in Discovery Green. Well, brothers and sisters, we got our skate on last night. Here's what you need to know before you skate your heart out and release your inner Chazz Michael Michaels.

That's right, folks, it's not a drive-in -- it's a glide-in! Discovery Green has been hard at work creating Houston's only outdoor ice rink for the holidays, which will have its grand opening tomorrow night!

Good news, Houston! Not only have we finally Jenny Craig'd our way out of the "Fattest City in America" title, we are also steadily becoming less sweaty.

We've been seeing Christmas decorations going up around town earlier and earlier every year. This was the first time we could remember seeing green and red before Halloween. Still, retailers must remind people that it's almost time to go into debt in celebration of the birth of Jesus, so that's their right. The Galleria is celebrating the lighting of their huge Christmas tree (and the attendant shopping rush) with a performance by former Olympic skater...

There were some people channeling our sentiments on Missed Connections this week, along with a very cheap Yahoo user and an elusive ice skating cowboy. Read on:

No, this is not a "Facts of Life" revival. Wendy Wagner, whose alter ego is Tootie Tickle in her art, will have a gallery talk tonight at 7 about her fantastic show up at New Gallery/Thom Andriola. "The Show Must Go On!" , like its title, is a bit off the wall. It's got whimsy, it's got humor, and it's pleasantly bizarre. Wagner has created a set of characters and put them in action...

Houstonist had a pretty nice weekend, enjoying the weather (did you catch the amazing heat lightning on Saturday?), ice skating at the Gallaria, eating cake at Empire Cafe, and having other assorted fun, but one particular piece of exciting news warmed our sleep-deprived soul. The 59 Diner (3801 Farnharm, at Greenbriar/Shepherd and 59) is going to be open 24 hours a day starting today. Long-term readers will know us as big proponents of latenight food,...

If you’re making plans for a vacation sometime between Dec. 2007 and Apr. 2008 (Houstonist procrastinates, so that doesn’t include us), we have an idea for you: a cruise. Royal Caribbean International is sending one of their Voyager of the Seas ships to dock in Galveston. Holding almost 4,000 passengers, the ship will be the largest to ever port out of Galveston.

Houstonist knows how hard it can be to keep some of those well-meaning, but slightly impossible, New Year's resolutions (like losing 35 pounds or reading War and Peace), so we've drafted some ways our fair city can help you reach your goals. Lose weight: So we were the fattest city in 2005. That doesn't mean you can't take advantage of our unseasonably warm weather and hit the parks to walk off your waistline. Eat healthier:...
