The sun rose on a beautiful, windy day on Sunday. In the whispers of the wind, you could almost hear the encouragement, and smell the impending victory. Your valiant Houstonist staff would soon convene to take on the Houston Arts & Media Houston History Road Rally (HAMHHRR) for the sake of honor, historical preservation, and cheap beer.

For the record, we're generally opposed to the soulless, sloppily constructed, oftentimes butt-ugly townhomes that are devouring the Inner Loop these days. But we know not everyone shares that opinion, so this week, for you townhome junkies, we present this Mediterranean-style house in the West End. Hey, if you're gonna live in a townhome, you might as well forego those red brick quasi-Georgian things everyone else has, right?
If there's anything we at shelterporn like as much as a good modern house, it's a good Craftsman bungalow. So of course we're really fond of this Montrose bungalow, which has all the cool exterior details you'd expect coupled with a nicely renovated interior. (And yeah, we do realize that shelterporn's on Sunday rather than Saturday today — but that's life.)
From this weekend's news, another reason not to live in those townhomes that are going up all over the Inner Loop: If you do, the city might not pick up your trash. That's the issue at the Calumet Street Lofts in the Third Ward, one of those Urban Lofts developments that shoehorns a bunch of metal townhomes into a tiny area by putting some on the inside of the property, accessible by narrow driveways. And...
Suburban life seems kind of idyllic sometimes, doesn't it? The new houses, the good schools, the big, well-manicured lawns, the flying nails — yeah, that's right, flying nails. It's been a problem in at least one neighborhood in Dickinson, where a family has found nails on two occasions from a construction site about 200 feet away.
