Here are a few books Houstonist thinks your friends and family won't use for doorstops (that's the fruitcake, right?). Everyone likes a good read, or at least a smart-looking book to sit on the nightstand. Give these a try. And shop at your local independent bookstore -- they can give you even more recommendations, and probably a good cup of coffee as well.

Ok, so it’s been like eight years since American Pie came out. Can you believe it? We know, we’re so old. It was a totally different decade then. A forgotten, distant time in our culture. An innocent age when we’d not yet seen Tara Reid’s, well, pretty much everything. A time when most of us had never heard the term MILF. A time when Eugene Levy had not yet sold his once funny soul to...

This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King and appreciated their beautiful skyline. Chicagoist knows what it's like to like the Cubs. But naming your kid Wrigley Fields? At least they can breathe a little easier now that Grossman's out and...

Yar! Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Houstonians, grab some rum and behave badly - don't forget your eyepatch and your parrot! OH, and the hat - we love us some hats! Don that puffy shirt and swill some grog, or rum - or hijacked wine (from your friends houses - we don't condone thievery, unless it's among friends and well co-workers)! We have been singing along to the "Pirates of the...

Other tunes from Camera Obscura, The Magic Numbers, and Brazilian Girls give this iMix some international...

Good morning, Houston. Imagine that you're driving along one day when a traffic light falls from an overhead line and crashes through your car's windshield. You'd think the city would be responsible for the accident, right? Wrong! Just ask Lei Zheng, who was on a shopping trip with his wife and son last year when a traffic light fell on his Volkswagen. Zheng and his family weren't seriously hurt, but they did ask the...

Falling Apart to Half Time Dance has seen a vast resurgance in the country this year, whether blame lies with Fall Out Boy, or So You Think You Can Dance, we're not sure. But we are sure we are loving all the great talent that exists right here in dancetown Houston, TX. Swayze was so ahead of his time. Companies like the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater has helped to encourage these recent trends, and also...

Yesterday, members of the Caribbean Impact Foundation, a local non-profit organization, stood before the International Liaison and Protocol Committee to request that the city name this week Caribbean Relief Week due to the devastating effects Hurricane Dean had on many Caribbean nations. The mayor issued the proclamation and encouraged Houstonians to do what they can to aid the relief work: Houstonians have always shown a big heart in times of need, and I know they...

Lucy, the hottest old lady in the whole entire world, is getting written up everywhere: Forbes, Time, The Washington Post and of course The Chron. The 3.2 million year old hominid from Ethiopia is about to go on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science on Friday with much fanfare and attention. The fossil is so very old and rare that paleoanthropologists are concerned about the damage that international travel, display and a potential...

...and so are temperatures all over the planet (especially in Houston this week). This afternoon, environmental leaders engage citizens, in the form of Starbucks customers, in conversations about climate change and offer practical solutions to the climate crisis. This afternoon from 2 - 3pm at the W. Gray Starbucks (um, the one with the drive-thru, not to be confused with the one across the street without the drive-thru), the green-minded coffee company will host a...

Rockets center Yao Ming got married yesterday, or two days ago, or perhaps last month (we're not good with the whole International Date Line thing here at Houstonist) to his long-time girlfriend Ye Li. Lest you think that Ye is going to look like a pixie next to 7'6" Yao, keep in mind that she's 6'2" herself. She's a basketball player on China's national team in her own right. Their children will no doubt be...

Trips to New York City always entail a few specific requirements for Houstonist, one of which is a visit to Joe’s Shanghai for the mind-blowing soup dumplings. Our last visit to NYC was over a year ago, but the soup dumplings have haunted our dreams ever since. So we set out to find soup dumplings of our very own in the international mecca of Houston. After many disappointing experiences, we finally found a place that...

This is a competition between 4 MLS teams and 4 teams in Mexico’s Primera División. The 4 MLS teams were selected by invitation this year, but in the future tournaments they will be selected based on the top 4 teams during regular season play. The Houston Dynamo, along with DC United...

Good morning, Houston. As we prepare for the rain chance to increase again — yeah, sorry, we hate to be the bearers of bad news — we're stopping for a second to realize just how much it's rained so far this month. Officially, we've had 8.34 inches of rain so far in July, smashing the 2.34-inch average for the month and making this the eighth-wettest July on record. And there's still a week left...

Remember Dan Duncan, the founder of pipeline company Enterprise Products Partners and the richest man in Houston? He's in the news again today, but this time it isn't for his wealth. Instead, Duncan may face criminal charges connected with a 2002 hunting trip in Siberia; it seems Duncan shot and killed a moose and sheep from a helicopter during the trip, a practice that's illegal in Russia. And though no complaints or charges were filed...
