Get To Know A Houston Band: The Literary Greats

H-Town Rock took a trip over to Valhalla this week and sat down with Brandon Elam and Taylor Lee of The Literary Greats, who were coming from a session on KTRU's Local Show. We chatted about everything from their new record to beer baskets to Ice Cube. The full audio from our 30 minute chat can be listened to here, including the weirdest intro to an interview yet.

Get to Know a Houston Band: GTRS

Here at H-Town Rock we've been dreaming up an interview feature for a while, so we're proud to announce our new weekly feature: Get to Know a Houston Band. This week we sat down at Rudyard's with GTRS for a chat covering their everything from their album White Night White Night, their penchant for prank calls, and their impending move to Asheville, North Carolina. Yes, they're moving, but we wanted to catch them before they split.

H-Town Rock Interviews: The Pack A.D.

The Pack A.D. is a garage rock duo out of Vancouver, Canada whose sound is steeped in a healthy portion of the blues. The drumming of Maya Miller meets with the singing and guitar work of Becky Black to create an appealingly raw and visceral sound that calls to mind Son House, Janis Joplin, and The Black Keys. The band has released two records: Tinytype was self-released by the band in 2007 (re-released by Mint Records in2008) and Mint Records released Funeral Mixtape in 2008.

H-Town Rock Interviews: Vanessa Peters

Born and bred in Texas, Vanessa Peters is a singer-songwriter in the vein of Lucinda Williams and Sarah Harmer who has toured America and Europe quite extensively in the past six years. Her new record, entitled Sweetheart, Keep Your Chin Up, effectively showcases her long-form, storytelling lyrical style and pretty soprano, while her backing band, a trio of Italian gentlemen called Ice Cream On Mondays, weave a skillful blend of classic country, alt-country, and folk.

H-Town Rock Interviews: Orange Is In

Before the band sets off for Austin to play SXSW 2009, H-Town Rock decided to take a bit of time to chat with Orange Is In about the event itself, the Houston music scene, and all things in between.

We here at H-Town Rock are fans of the idea of the concept record, but too many such records become bloated with ambition without ever really delivering on the promise of the actual concept. But every once in awhile, we come across a record like Hospice, the new record from New York-based band The Antlers. The album is a collection of songs serves as a novelistic requiem to a lost loved one that is equal parts deeply sensual longing and achingly pining resolution. Having already received a host of accolades for this project (including being named the best album of 2009 so far by NPR), The Antlers are poised to play a slew of shows at SXSW, but not before making a stop in Houston.

H-Town Rock Interviews: DeVotchKa

We here at H-Town Rock love nothing more than bands who, by their very nature, serve to confound the eyes and ears of the traditional rock music fan. These groups, whether intentionally or not, compel people, through their talent level and passion as entertainers, to set aside what they typically listen to and embrace something wholly different. Hailing from Denver, CO, DeVotchKa is one such band, ushering forth an Eastern-Europe-meets-Spain hybrid sound by merging guitars and pianos with bouzouki, accordion, theremin, and sousaphone.

H-Town Rock Interviews: M83

If you us permit the chance to be dorky music fans, Saturdays=Youth from M83 was one of our favorite records in 2008, with "Kim & Jessie," "Graveyard Girl," and "Couleurs"; serving as some of our favorite singles. Whether it was the waves of thick, gauzy distortion created by the guitars, the layers upon layers of darkly luxuriant keyboards, or the not-quite-innocent adolescent ruminations upon life, death, love, and heartbreak, the record struck a distinct chord in not only our hearts, but also the hearts of people worldwide. Anthony Gonzalez has been the mastermind behind M83 since the group's inception, but Saturdays=Youth might just be his magnum opus.

H-Town Rock Interviews: Nico Vega

H-Town Rock will always have a special place in our heart for the strong, passionate women who seek to carve out a place for themselves in the testosterone-soaked pantheon of rock ‘n’ roll. Granted, having a set of worthwhile musicians alongside her is always a welcome addition, because crappy music will drown out excellent wordplay every time.

Welcome to our new feature here at H-Town Rock. It has been a pleasure to provide you with our weekly music calendar for the past few months, but we wanted to up the ante a bit and diversify what we’re offering to the dozen or so readers of Houstonist. So, we’re introducing “H-Town Rock Interviews:” and hoping that everyone enjoys our attempt to shed a bit more light on local (i.e. Houston and Texas-wide) bands. For our first installment, Houstonist had the opportunity to interview the Austin, TX-based indie-punk four-piece, The Midgetmen.

From this weekend's bizarre news file comes the story of Jeremy Barfield, the Klein High School baseball star who was drafted by the New York Mets — and was arrested Sunday morning after allegedly pushing his dad down a flight of stairs. It apparently started with an argument between Jeremy and his dad, Jesse Barfield, a former MLB All-Star and Astros coach: "(Jeremy) and his father had some kind of argument that apparently took place...
