Ahh, three weeks into the New Year. The gyms are still over-flowing with well-intentioned resolution-focused dieters and salads are no longer the pre-game show to the entree but the actual entree. We poo-poo this annual habit! Especially when we heard that Raindrop Chocolate just got their shiny new hot chocolate machine. On a cold rainy day, a little real European hot chocolate is exactly what our resolution-less soul needed. True to the rumors, the hot chocolate machine was whirling it's magic, but alas and alack, it wasn't ready yet! Not ready yet?! What's not to be ready with hot chocolate? Don't you just heat up the chocolate, add some milk, plop in some marshmallows and sip your worries away? No, not at all, says owner and chocolate connoisseur Don. Don was put on a year-and-a-half waiting list to get this hot chocolate machine from a little company in Italy. We're not really sure what makes this particular machine so special, but we do know that it costs $2000 and takes a few hours of whirling a batch of real chocolate to get it just right. We predict that a $2000 machine will probably trump our Swiss Miss microwave variety and we plan to come back when our craving for hot chocolate strikes again.

What would be the obvious career path for someone who went to Harvard for undergrad and Yale for law school? Well, write and publish restaurant guides, of course. Duh. Houstonist had the opportunity to sit with author/entrepreneur/foodie/publisher/world-traveller Robin Goldstein and his managing editor/foodie/marketer/public-relations-exec/S.O. Alexis Herschkowitsch. Robin has just released his Houston restaurant guide – Fearless Critic, Houston Restaurant Guide (one of the very first complete printed guides in Houston - and no, Zagat doesn't count)....

Houstonist hits Italy's Rimini Beach every Pasqua (that's Easter for y'all that don't habla) for fun in the sun, dynamite food and to make-uh the party. And while you can make-uh the party without booze, we like-uh our booze. One of our favorite Italian libations is limoncello. Limoncello is a great aperitif or digestif that is made from grain alcohol, lemon zest and sugar. The drink is sweet and sour, but not like Chinese food....
Goodbye hump day, hello rain. Did anyone else have a sucky Wednesday? And to top it off, the current monsoon over our office is making us have flashbacks of the beginning of the summer. What happened to our 108 degrees and sunny?! We are on a mission to make the most of this wet and soggy day, so we are heading to the Museum of Fine Arts tonight as they present Artful Thursdays. Because...

Looks like more changes are in store for Allen Parkway: According to the Chronicle, the Allen House apartments will soon be demolished to make way for Regent Square, a mixed-use "urban village" development. Good news for one of our favorite works of art in Houston: Jay Baker's "Light Spikes," the collection of eight 24-foot-high flag pillars created for the 1990 Economic Summit. The pillars originally stood in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center, but were moved to Intercontinental Airport when the summit ended — and they've remained there ever since, sitting alongside the airport's main drive. Problem is, the work was never intended to be permanent,...
Because we're people who know people, we got into yet another movie premiere. This time it was for the latest Zach Braff flick, "The Last Kiss". It also stars Jacinda Barrett of MTV's "Real World: London" fame, Casey Affleck, Rachel Bilson (who we hear is on a little TV show called "The OC"), and Blythe Danner. It's a comedy/drama, but don't expect to leave the theater feeling all warm and fuzzy after you see...
While some of us may still be stuck in morning traffic, the nation's soccer fans will be enjoying their sick day glued to the TV as the US takes on Ghana. Team USA needs a win today to even consider moving on to the second round. If they pull out the win, they will then need Italy to defeat the Czech Republic. If Italy loses, there is still a chance the US squad can advance, however most of those scenarios include the US scoring multiple goals against Ghana.
]The stormy weather that passed through Houston earlier today may have been a blessing in disguise as couch potatoes everywhere were rewarded with two fantastic World Cup games.
Things are going well for Houston’s newest major league sports team. The Houston Dynamo, a part of MLS, won their last game 4-3 over FC Dallas. And then Brian Ching, a forward for the team, was named the MLS Player or the Month. And today, Ching joins the US national team in Cary, N.C., for training camp to get ready for the FIFA World Cup that happens once every four years. The 2006 edition is...
