Good morning, Houston. When we hear the words "concrete canoe," two other words come to mind: "doesn't float." But our instincts are wrong: Concrete canoes can be seaworthy, and one created by University of Houston engineering students floats so well that it's headed for the national concrete canoe competition in Seattle. The national contest is set for mid-June, and it could lead the team to a spot in the international competition in Holland in...

Good morning, Houston. Score one for Sugar Land's fake downtown: This summer, it will become the location of the Children's Museum of Houston's first satellite location. The Children's Museum of Houston Discovery Center at Sugar Land Town Square — that's CMHDCSLTS for short — will occupy 9,000 square feet of space in the Town Square development for six weeks beginning June 1. Though it's just a temporary deal, museum brass say the Discovery Center...

If your classic car collection is missing that certain something, may we suggest that you head down to Seabrook this weekend for the Worldwide Group Houston Classic Auction? A bunch of classic autos will be on the auction block, including a sweet '53 Corvette roadster, an elegant '52 Jaguar, a '70 American Motors AMX Fastback — oh, and what will undoubtedly be one of the stars of the show: the hearse that carried JFK's body...

In what the mayor's spokesman has called "an award that recognizes what tens of thousands of Houstonians participated in," Mayor White has been honored with the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for his work to help the tens of thousands Katrina and Rita evacuees that fled to Houston. The award is named after JFK's Pulitzer Prize-winning book and annually recognizes Americans who have demonstrated commitment and contribution to public service. It is the...

Looks like Houston's red-light camera system has been busy: In the month since the cameras went into operation, they've issued more than 1,600 citations. According to the Chronicle, the cameras at nine locations caught 1,985 vehicles running lights between Sept. 1 and Oct. 6; the 10th location, JFK and Greens, was having technical difficulties.

Where were you the day JFK was shot? When the statement was uttered "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind?" Where were you on Sept. 11, 2001? Houstonist remembers exactly where we were when the tragedy occurred: watching a television at work, amid of a handful of employees at an office downtown, wondering, "Is that a Die Hard movie?” But then we noticed the CNN logo in the corner of the screen...

Being the jaded Interweb users that we are, Houstonist thought we had heard it all when it came to online scams — but apparently, we were wrong. KTRK reports today on an online lost-dog scam that has hit hundreds of people.

If you're in the habit of sneaking through red lights, enjoy your lawless ways while you can: The installation of Houston's first 10 red-light cameras is almost finished, and the system is expected to go live Sept. 1. The cameras are located at Milam and Elgin, Brazos and Elgin, Pease at La Branch and Travis at Webster in Midtown; Richmond at Dunvale, Richmond at Hillcroft, Bellaire at Wilcrest and Harwin at Hillcroft on the southwest...

Travelers between Houston and New York will have another airline choice later this year: JetBlue, the low-price carrier that boasts leather seats and satellite TV on its planes, will begin service between Hobby and JFK on Sept. 7. Service will begin with three flights a day, the airline said. It's a busy summer for JetBlue, which has plans to add Aruba, Charlotte, Nashville, Pittsburgh and Raleigh-Durham to its list of cities served between now and...
