Good morning, Houston. As we were sitting around Monday morning contemplating using a witch's extremity to keep warm, we started to wonder exactly how cold it's gotten in the city before — and, thanks to the Internet, we know! According to the National Weather Service, the record low temperature for Houston was 5 degrees Fahrenheit, which we hit on Jan. 23, 1940. Maybe more interesting, though, is the Houston snowfall record: Turns out we haven't had any appreciable snowfall since Dec. 22, 1989, when 1.7 inches fell. That's nothing compared with the blizzard of Feb. 14-15, 1895, when a whopping 20 inches of snow fell in the city. We couldn't find any photos from that storm, but we did turn up a few Bob Bailey pictures from a snowfall on Jan. 30, 1949. Enjoy! more ›

Jurors on Thursday found former Texas Southern University CFO Quintin Wiggins guilty of misspending nearly $300,000 in public funds on furniture, landscaping and a security system for the private home of former university President Priscilla Slade. The cause of the illness, apparently, was food that had been contaminated with cleaning solutions. more ›

Yesterday morning, we talked about Mayor Bill White's 17-year-old daughter, Elena, getting arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated. It seemed innocuous enough at first: The mayor said she made a bad decision and that he was glad she was safe. But by the end of the day, White had changed his tune a little: Now he says his daughter doesn't think she was drunk and the arrest might have been a mistake. Elena White was... more ›

Federal prosecutors aren't finished with Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling's assets yet: They filed a motion Friday asking for $183 million from the pair of former Enron executives — money prosecutors say came from fraud Lay and Skilling committed while they led Enron. The sum includes $140 million in stock sales, compensation and bonuses from Skilling and $43 million from a bonus and use of a company credit line from Lay. The motion says Lay and Skilling "were able to sell Enron stock and reap hundreds of millions of dollars in benefits, all while knowingly misrepresenting Enron's true financial condition to the public." more ›
