On this lazy, semi-holiday, it feels like the perfect opportunity to browse around the 'net and find out what's been going on with our local teams. Only the Rockets are actually playing games right now, though the Astros are gearing up for theirs in Florida right now. The Texans continue to be a topic of discussion even though the NFL draft is yet two months away. With that in mind, let's take a look at what's been happening:

Good morning, Houston. Looks like our freewheeling land-use policies have gotten some national attention: The Wall Street Journal has a story focusing on the proposed residential tower at Bissonnet and Ashby. "The condo-tower dustup is just the latest in a string of odd situations allowed by Houston's lenient land-use rules," the article explains. "Rowdy cantinas, rock-crushing operations and commercial dumps sometimes pop up in residential neighborhoods. Condo towers sprout next to schools. A pay-by-the-hour... more ›

For once, this week's music calendar is light on local acts, heavy on touring acts. Tonight, catch classic crooner Tony Bennett (who turns 80 this year) at Jones Hall. Tomorrow night, we recommend California indie rock band Rocco Deluca & the Burden at Warehouse Live. Mix things up a little bit Wednesday night and catch Austin's Belleville Outfit at the Duck, combining jazz, swing and Americana. Houston's own R&B legend Archie Bell will "tighten... more ›

This week, don’t be looking for the big, A-list concerts, but that doesn’t mean that there’s a void of good live music choices. Sam Houston Race Park continues their summer concert series with Cory Morrow the same night. Saturday, you can take a step back into the 80’s with legendary... more ›

In a much expected move, the Houston Rockets have announced the firing of head coach Jeff Van Gundy. The firing comes after the Rockets lost during the first round playoffs to the Utah Jazz. Van Gundy started with the Rockets in the 2003 and had an overall record of 182-146 with the team. Although some consider Van Gundy to be a great fit with the Rockets, he never managed to get the team past the 1st round of playoffs. more ›

Kings of Leon is a family affair. The Tennessee band consist of three brothers and a cousin. Formed in 2000, the Followill boys didn't take long to make an impression: their 2003 debut album was on many critic's year-end favorites and the band was asked to open up for U2 and others. In the late 90's, the only touring they did was to various religious tent revivals with their father, a Pentecostal preacher. more ›

Tuesday Denver’s The Fray is making inroads on radio with “Over My Head (Cable Car),” now No. 13 on the adult rock/pop charts, but you wouldn’t know it by listening to Houston radio (Mix 96.5 has that format but they’re so conservative musically that they probably won’t play it for another month, if ever). Similar to Goo Goo Dolls, but fresher. Cary Brothers (actually a solo guy, no siblings with him) and Matt Kearney... more ›
