We're sure we've brought it up before, but nothing gives Houstonist an end-of-the-week pick-me-up like a news story about stupid criminals. It's been a long week, so we were doubly happy to note KPRC's report about an attempted smash-and-grab robbery that went embarrassingly wrong early this morning: Two men smashed a minivan into a store in an attempt to break into it, officials told KPRC Local 2. Officials said the men tried to break into...

If you’re a pet lover with too much time and money on your hands, a fun way to spend some of it would be to get a reading from a pet psychic.* We found a website for one based in Houston who was also used by KPRC Local 2 to do a reading for Radar, the weather dog. Her name is Lisa Greene, and she can give the reading over the phone or in...

Continuing in the tradition of reporting on flaming trash cans, KPRC made the most of a slow news day Tuesday by covering a burning tire downtown. No, really — they say it was one tire. Here's the story:

Houstonist has one less place to shop, at least for a few months. The downtown Foley’s location closed its doors Monday for the final time, according to KPRC Local 2. It looks like it's wildlife week here at Houstonist, what with the feral hogs and the wandering longhorn — and now there's a 10-foot python. Tom Jones and his sons didn't expect to catch a snake when they went fishing near Savoy Road and Highway 90 in Sugar Land. But they sure did:

More on the man arrested for hijacking a school bus in east Houston this morning: There's still no word on why he did it, but his joyride didn't last very long. Police said Ventre Lawaun Maxwell commandeered the bus, which is used to transport HISD students to Hartman Middle School and Attucks Middle School but was empty at the time, at about 7 this morning:

Attention all you smug receptionists, sitting behind your desks listening to Sunny and playing solitaire: You may not be as safe as you thought. Just ask the woman working the reception desk at an H&R Block at Ella and 18th, who was pinned behind her desk when a car crashed through the front of the office this morning.

Northside auto thieves were apparently surprised today when they discovered what had been left in Lila Monjaras's car: her 4-year-old son, Julio Reyna. Fortunately, Reyna was found, unharmed, in the car a few blocks from where it was stolen. Monjaras left her car unlocked with the engine running while she stopped at a convenience store in the 4400 block of Irvington Boulevard at about 7 a.m. When Monjaras came out of the store, the car was gone.

Two Katrina evacuees who were kicked out of a southwest Houston hotel came back for revenge this morning, shooting the hotel's security guard and then fleeing the scene.

Houston police are cracking down (again) on public sex in Memorial Park, and they've caught five men in "compromising positions" in the past few days.

Houstonist understands first-hand how one becomes attached to their iPod. Some parents of Jewell Simpson Houston Academy in northeast Houston don’t seem to take it as seriously and are complaining to officials about the pat-down search their kids went through when a sixth grade teacher’s MP3 player was missing:
