Scissors for Lefty is rolling into town tomorrow night to play an all ages show with Suffrajett at Jet Lounge. The San Francisco quintet has landed spots opening for the Arctic Monkeys and The Killers, as well as stage time at this year's South by Southwest Festival. Scissors is currently on a national tour with Juliette and the Licks. Spin has called Scissors one “of the biggest up-and-coming bands making noise on the West... more ›

Earlier this year, we talked about the downtown real estate boom: One Park Place, the apartment tower under construction at the edge of Discovery Green; Houston Pavilions, the retail and office complex being built on Main Street; and a few skyscrapers in the planning stages. Well, the Houston Business Journal reported on one of those proposed new buildings Friday: a 47-story skyscraper being planned by Hines in the 800 block of Main Street. There... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Ever been to Podunk, Texas? You have if you've ever visited the east Houston neighborhood of Denver Harbor, which was affectionately called Podunk during the Great Depression because it was then far enough east to seem semi-rural. And as of yesterday, thanks to a state House resolution, Podunk is the Official Mythical Town of Texas. Grady got the resolution passed by gathering 700 signatures on a petition and persuading the area's... more ›

Tomorrow night is the Ultimate Fighting Championship's debut in Houston at the Toyota Center, giving the budding mixed martial arts fan base a chance to see a big-league card in person (and not on a television screen in Hooter's, for once). UFC 69's headline fight will be a bout between defending welterweight champion George St. Pierre and feisty contender Matt "The Terra" Serra, but the heartwarming story will be that of middleweight Mike "Quick"... more ›

Good morning, Houston. We can't remember a time when Ed Brandon wasn't on KTRK — so it'll be odd when he's not on TV anymore. As we learned from Mike McGuff yesterday, Brandon plans to retire in mid-April after 35 years in front of the weather map. McGuff has a long (and fascinating) interview with Brandon; once you've checked that out, you can leave a comment for Ed on Channel 13's website. >> Lampson... more ›

We thought we'd take a stroll by Minute Maid Park to see what was going on at the site of the former William Penn Hotel, located at the corner of La Branch St. and Texas Ave. With the past exploits of Spire Realty, who chose to demolish the hotel one year ago, we were sure that perhaps something interesting was in the works. Unfortunately, the most activity that has occurred is the pouring of a... more ›

If you're in the habit of sneaking through red lights, enjoy your lawless ways while you can: The installation of Houston's first 10 red-light cameras is almost finished, and the system is expected to go live Sept. 1. The cameras are located at Milam and Elgin, Brazos and Elgin, Pease at La Branch and Travis at Webster in Midtown; Richmond at Dunvale, Richmond at Hillcroft, Bellaire at Wilcrest and Harwin at Hillcroft on the southwest... more ›

Here's something we wish we'd seen while it was still up: In Midtown, someone covered a billboard with a homemade poster featuring Jesus holding a can of Budweiser between the slogans "King of Jews" and "King of Beers." Given some of the more bizarre advertising we've seen lately, we wouldn't have been surprised if the sign was an actual ad — but the company that leases the billboard said it wasn't. Officials said they believe... more ›

Well, it didn't take long for the rumored apartment buildings to start popping up around the new downtown park — there was news this weekend of one of them, a 37-story tower under development by The Finger Companies. The building, called the Park Tower, will be built on the block bounded by McKinney, Austin, Lamar and La Branch, with the park site on its east side and Houston Center on the west. The $100... more ›

Houstonist recently noticed a sign at the corner of Binz and La Branch advertising a future high-rise office/residential development. Though it piqued our curiosity, our innate lethargy made it impossible for us to circle the block and write down the number on the sign so we could call and find out what's up. That's why we like the hard-working folks at SkyscraperPage.com, who found out the proposal is for a 35-story office/condo tower. It's a... more ›
