In 1984, a concept became reality when the East End Show, now simply known as "The Big Show", opened and a juried exhibit of Houston artists became an annual event. Originally sponosored by the East End Progress Association and held at the Lawndale Art Center's original location, the exhibit has grown into an annual open-call exhibit (juried, did we mention juried) to showcase artists whose work would possibly go unnoticed without this venue. This year, over 407 artists submitted 1,017 works for consideration. Guest curator, Aram Moshayedi selected 95 works by 60 artists for this years show. Running from July, 11 - August, 22, The Big Show kicks off tomorrow with a public reception from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. - awards will be announced at 8:00 p.m.

In honor of the upcoming Dia de los Muertos (in November, yes) the Lawndale Art Center is giving out retablo tins for area artists to decorate for a silent auction benefiting Lawndale programs. Retablos are small traditional Mexican paintings of saints and religious imagery, although we've seen punk rock, KISS and Paul Frank retablos in our day as well. Wannabe retablo artists need only pick swing by Lawndale (4912 Main St.) and grab one for...

Lawndale Art Center: The Big Show! Houstonist hearts Lawndale. And we have a really big heart for their really big show, appropriately-titled The Big Show. The Big Show is Lawndale Art Center’s annual open-call, juried exhibition. It has been an important venue through which emerging and under-represented Houston area artists gain exposure since the show’s conception in 1984. The Big Show was formerly the East End Show, sponsored by the East End Progress Association, at...

Never Been to Houston Gallery Talk If our post about the Never Been to Houston show at the Lawndale Art Center couldn't convince you to go, and our interviews with some of the photographers didn't do the trick either, we have just the thing for you: a gallery talk! Jon Rubin, co-curator of the exhibit, along with Aurora Picture Show, will be speaking about the show tonight at Lawndale. Rubin is a multi-disciplinary artist whose...
Houston is pretty image-conscious, and rightly so. We've been labeled fat, dangerous, and not exactly the best place to have a kid either. Houstonians know our city's tops, but how do we tell the rest of the world that? The Aurora Picture Show and professor Jon Rubin (who's never been to Houston himself) are curating an exhibit about Houston by people who have never been here, and the results are very interesting. Rubin and APS's...

The empty bowls will serve as a reminder of all the empty bowls in our community and around the world. All...
If you haven't notice by the cajillion H&R Block vs. TurboTax commerical wars, it's tax time. And as we await our W-2's in the mail, many local artists long for the day they will receive theirs.

It's no secret Houstonist loves art. Loves it. It's also no secret that we love to stick it to the man. Really, every entry to this blog is another death blow to the MSM. So we have to bring it to your attention when these two great tastes that taste great together come to town. Through January 20 at the Lawndale Art Center, Yumi Janairo Roth will be showing , a show of traditionally authortarian objects (barricades, pylons, etc.) that have been given the Studio 54 disco ball treatment. Says the Lawndale:
The artist sets these objects throughout the city and documents the different interactions that happen when they are placed in the context of urban mobility.Sounds fierce. This evening at 6 p.m. the artist will be on hand to discuss the work, followed by an opening reception until 8:30. Riot shields and tear gas are optional.
So we're assuming you've already sampled Fleur-de-lis Restoration Ale, which benefits the rebuilding of areas affected by Hurricane Katrina? Good, good — drink up and get ready for some art impulse buying.
