In October of 2005, there were many voices to be heard in Houston calling Brad Lidge to be shipped out of town or worse; two years later, those voices were heard. Tonight, the Astros finalized a trade to send Lidge and utility infielder Eric Bruntlett to the Phillies for center fielder and University of Houston grad Michael Bourn, relief pitcher Geoff Geary, and third base prospect Mike Costanzo. This marks the Astros' first serious move... more ›

So every Tuesday, we'll bring you a list of CDs that we think will give you the most bang for your buck. Ryan Adams and his band the Cardinals release an EP called Follow the Lights today, just months after the acclaimed full-length Easy... more ›

Good morning, Houston. We think it's even too hot for the beach lately, but that didn't stop lots of people from heading to Galveston last weekend. But the heat wasn't the only thing those folks had to watch out for - fourteen of them were stung by stingrays. These injuries were all due to beachgoers stepping on stingrays and causing them to lash out. According to Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis, such incidents can... more ›

So Mayor Bill White will ask City Council today for money to synchronize more of the city's traffic lights — a continuation of one of White's first initiatives when he took office. According to KHOU, about 70 percent of Houston's traffic lights have been synchronized; it's not clear how many more the $300,000 White will ask for would take care of, but we hope that much money would go a long way. more ›

Spring is when we get busy here in the Ist-A-Verse. Very busy. But, after staying bundled-up indoors all winter, it's nice for us to be out, about, and collecting things to write about for you. Here's a glimpse at what's been keeping your favorite citybloggers busily away from home and out of bed. For LAist, strong winds attacked LA on the same day the Feds raided the Crips. Not to fear, though: the Japanese version... more ›

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor Hipster Gigante. Deep blues and the reflections of the lights really draw you in to this image. Shot while waiting for a shuttle outside Terminal B at IAH this is one of those views that you usually take for granted as you look up, sigh and wonder where that dang shuttle is. If you have a passion for Houston and photography,... more ›

March and April are two of the best months for weather in Houston, so it's a great time to try out bicycling to work. Of course, for a lot of people who live outside the loop (or, God forbid, Katy) and work downtown, this isn't an option. But if you live close enough, it’s a great way to get exercise, fresh air (sort of), save money on gas, and do something good for the environment. more ›

Austinist gets arty with an interactive guide to SXSW, loved some local art galleries and a new art exhibit and lamented the possible loss of "Friday Night Lights" production to New Mexico. Bostonist was happy they finally found an Anna Nicole Smith connection to their fair city and that an Apple Store was opening up. They were less happy that new rules have been established limiting underage shows and that their Governor is spending... more ›

H-Town is seriously busy! This weekend brings Lights in the Heights, The Citrus Festival, the XMAS Tree Project, The Tree Lighting Downtown, The Houston Blues Society Holiday Ball, ensuring the homeless have plenty to eat, and shopping for either gifts, or that perfect ensemble to wear to Houstonist's Birthday Party. But wait, there really is more - and more, and more - 'tis the season, after all. If you are not imbibing on the company... more ›

An annual tradition that Houstonist likes to enjoy is the Lights in the Heights. Walking around the street in the heart of Woodland Heights, with almost every bungalow decorated, carolers and musicians playing Christmas music, it’s the quickest way to get us in the holiday mood. Add the chilly weather to the mix, it makes the experience perfect. more ›

Hanukkah this year starts the night of December 15th, and it’s just one more reason for the (Jewish) people of Houston to get their party on. Invitations to Christmas parties are flying all over the place, so we wanted to make sure that the fiestas to celebrate the Festival of Lights get their moment, too. First, there’s the big daddy of Houston Hanukkah parties, the JCCBagel Ball. //Sunday, December 24 //Pub Fiction //2303 Smith... more ›

If you're hiking, consider charging up your iPod, as Seattlest finds out that a man lost during a hike was found by the glow of his iPod. That cleverness seems to be devoid in cops who were using police cruiser instant messaging clients - although we imagine IMs "so are you nakie" to be included in cop shows, just for realism. If only the cops were busting the Hummer-driving jerk who made a poor... more ›

Houston will conclude its celebration of Gandhi Week this Sunday at City Hall with an event called 1000 Lights for Peace. The event will commence with a peace torch relay, beginning at the Gandhi statue in Hermann Park at 3:30 p.m. and ending at the steps of City Hall just after 5. At City Hall, Mayor Bill White will give an address to thousands of participants during a candlelit ceremony which lends the event its name. In his address the Mayor will also proclaim October 1, 2006, Houston Peace Day in honor of Mahatma Gandhi. The event will also include a multi-cultural entertainment program and activities for children. Those attending the ceremony will be prompted to make a commitment to practicing peace in their personal lives and promoting Gandhi's message of peace and non-violence. more ›

Wednesday Aussies The Church will be remembered most in the states for their haunting hit song “Under the Milky Way,” though they’ve continued to have more success in their homeland. Rob Dickinson from Catherine Wheel (remember "Black Metallic"?) opens. 9 p.m. at the Meridian | tickets and info We love free concerts. But we were surprised to hear that Jesse Dayton (who usually plays at places like Continental Club and Armadillo Palace) was being... more ›

As we at Houstonist started our day, the Buzz's Brother Rod was playing a crowd favorite "Drive Thru Sing-a-Long" during which courageous contestants festively sang "Deck the Halls," hoping an unknowing drive-thru attendant would chime in with the chorus. (We'll sing with you … fa la la la la, lala la la!) To our dismay, it took over an hour and countless attempts for someone to win this reindeer game. So where's the holiday spirit?... more ›

Houstonist found the holiday spirit Friday night at the opening of the Holiday Lights in Hermann Park. The city and the Hermann Park Conservancy have ringed the park's reflecting pool (above) and McGovern Lake with displays of lights; even the pedal boats are decorated. If that's not enough to get you feeling merry, the park is also dotted with speakers blasting Christmas favorites from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and der Bingle. more ›

Like it or not, Thanksgiving has come and gone, so the holidays are officially upon us. Stressed? Us too. Fortunately, there are plenty of holiday distractions — here are a few of the old standbys. Do you know a holiday event Houstonist should note? Drop us a candygram. In the meantime, Merry Christmas/happy Hanukkah/happy Kwanzaa/super Winter Solstice! Sure, there are always a bunch of community theater productions of A Christmas Carol, but only in... more ›
