It's March now; the freakish weather is in full effect and your allergies are making you wish the spring was a figment of your imagination. What better way to celebrate than to go outside? more ›

Tonight, catch Grammy award-winning R&B vocalist, singer/songwriter Jill Scott at Verizon Wireless. Frequent visitor Bob Schneider makes his trip from Austin a little bit shorter tomorrow by playing at the Cypress Saloon in northwest Houston. Local faves Orange Is In is opening, which makes for a great double-bill. Another local act, The Mighty Orq, will be presenting a lot of new material at his CD release show at the Meridian Friday night (you’ll probably hear some new stuff from his opener Tody Castillo, too). Saturday night, be sure to catch a whole slew of local bands at the Free Press’ five year anniversary bash at Super Happy Fun Land. more ›

We're noticing a trend in great local bands: the older we get, the younger they get. The Wild Moccasins just happen to be one of those bands. more ›

One small block in Houston, one large music scene - especially this coming weekend. This event is not recommended for the faint of heart, new age-types or the extremely un-coordinated (there will be dancing, foolish, crazy, too-hip-to-care, dancing - hell, brang your uncoordinated ass on - we are bringing ours). Both local, both about the most fun you can have with your clothes on - tequila shots not recommended. Two local bands will be taking over the block, starting with Disco Expressions on Friday night. Yes, disco - bust out your polyester, bring on your wide collars and satin and stuff, get ready for some kung fu fighting and do the locomotion all the way to the Continental Club, from 10:00 p.m. until you don't have to go home, but cannot stay there - or 2:00 a.m., whichever comes first. Oh but wait, fans of music made popular WAY before 1980, there's more! Saturday, same bat time, The Allen Oldies Band (our personal favorite) will be cruisin' on over to The Big Top at 3712 Main for some delirious fun and general mayhem. Bring a penchant for peanut butter and your best good mashed potato moves, and some folding money for the bartender(ress). We double dog dare you to have a bad time at either show - just try, TRY!!! more ›

As you might have heard by now, after five excellent years or celebrating the local music scene in every shape, size, form and capacity, the Proletariat is closing. A lighter week for concerts, but many home-state bred musicians are in town. Tomorrow night, we recommend San Antonio's Girl In A Coma, but if you prefer 90's rock, you might want to catch Dallas' The Toadies return to Verizon Wireless. Speaking of returns, Bandera's Robert Earl Keen brings his annual Christmas show to town Friday night. Saturday, Warehouse Live is hosting a few local bands, headlined by Million Year Dance. Not from Texas,... more ›

If you are looking for someway to enjoy the outdoors this weekend, check out the 2007 Ballunar Festival in Clear Lake at the Johnson Space Center. The festival started in 1993, when Steve Lombardi (head balloon pilot for RE/MAX) wanted to celebrate the 200th anniversary of man’s first flight at the location of today’s most technologically advanced flight operations. 14 years later the Ballunar Festival is still going strong, with over 60 Balloons registered... more ›

So many good shows this week, that we don’t have enough space to highlight all of them. Tonight, our pick is the pure pop sounds of Office tonight at The Mink (congratulations to Cynthia for winning tickets through us!). Singer/songwriter fans will have a touch choice Thursday night – Ryan Adams makes a rare Houston appearance at Verizon Wireless and former Toad the Wet Sprocket front man Glen Phillips plays two shows at the... more ›

The day was sunny with very few clouds overhead. The music was local and there was lots of it. Over fifty bands were scheduled to perform in the span of about nine hours at three locations with five stages and the block party fans came out in force to soak up the sun and music. There were artists, creating and selling art, there were art installations, a smattering of food and merchandise vendors. There was... more ›

Spent all your cash on girlie drinks and shattered dreams again this weekend, didn't you? No worries - Thriftster gives you the lowdown on cheap stuff to do until Paycheck Friday. How does a band with "Church" in its name end up playing more dive bars than youth groups? That's what we set out to discover in our conversation with The Woodlands-based group The Church of Philadelphia. Their sound is evocative of some of the big names in indie rock and Americana, and ranges from foot-stomping hoe-downs to hauntingly dreary dirges. Houstonist had the opportunity to sit down with members Brian Tharpe and Joey Matthews (they... more ›

This week is a little light on “big name” musical acts, but don’t let that get you down – there are still plenty of good local bands to see. Southern Rockers, Shinedown, are playing at Verizon Wireless on Wednesday. On Thursday you can check out Fulton Read, a strong new band from the Austin area, who is having their CD release party at Fitzgerald’s. Our pick for Friday is to see The Lemurs play... more ›

With all of the rain we’ve been having, it’d be nice to just sit (or stand) indoors somewhere and enjoy some good music. So, that’s what Houstonist is going to do. Many good choices for this weekend – here are our picks: Tonight Jazz comes to Fitzgerald’s tonight. However, this isn’t your grandfather’s jazz. One of our local favorites, Drop Trio (pictured on the left), will be joining headliner O’2L (which features a member of... more ›

Just because there are no multi-million selling artists coming into town this week doesn't mean you should sit home. Actually, it's a great week to check out some quality local and regional artists. The Continental Club is hosting a killer Texas country/rock line-up Saturday night -- it includes Hayes Carll, Jesse Dayton and The Weary Boys. Also, Houston's Arthur Yoria is celebrating the release of his new CD at Rudyard's the same night. Other... more ›

When you think of block parties, you usually thing of a cul-de-sac in a suburban neighborhood with hot dogs, red and white checkered table clothed over folding tables, annoying neighbors drinking their Miller Lite while they scream at their kids. Put those thoughts behind you – the Westheimer Block Party is totally different, and much better. Think of a block party in the Montrose area, the heart of Houston, with over 40 local bands playing.... more ›

Houstonist is hip - but you already knew that. Well, now we're proving it: we're on MySpace. We like to keep a finger on the pulse of the city, and MySpace is a great way to keep up with local bands and events around Houston. Plus, we hear it's a good place to meet older men. But seriously, this isn't just a competition to see if we can get more friends than Austinist (although we... more ›

Before we begin, we'd like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of James Kim. We are not, by any means, trying to discount that tragedy by juxtaposing posts about the Kims with more light-hearted posts. It's the nature of doing a compilation such as this one: we're trying to give a full slice of the goings-on in the Ist-a-Verse: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Londonist wants you to know where to... more ›

Instead of vegging in front of the TV, or fighting the crowds at the mall, we suggest one of these concerts to pass away your holidays. Houston’s Allen Oldies Band is celebrating their 10th anniversary Wednesday night, allowing you to dance off some pounds before you fill up on turkey. Some great original local bands to catch this week include The Dimes and Something Fierce at Walter’s, and Ryan Scroggins’ ska band at Fitz.... more ›

Aerosmith and Motley Crue come to town this weekend, too, but those bands seem... more ›

Wednesday Pennsylvanian Nick Castro draws his muse from the likes of Dead Can Dance and other semi-Gothic, lush bands. Unlike DCD, Castro manages to throw in some good melodies. Equally captivating local bands Georgia’s Horse and Inoculist open. Music: “Winding Tree” 8 p.m. at the Proletariat | info Thursday Even though we have our own top-notch 80’s cover band Molly & the Ringwalds, there’s room for more in the Lone Star State.
