Houstonist braved the heat, crowds, light rail trains, random panhandlers and city sidewalks to enjoy this year's Houston Press Music Awards Showcase. The event was held at various spots along Main St. and points beyond. We snapped photos of as many bands as we could but couldn't be everywhere, so here are some highlights from this year's event.

We hope you have your Saturday cleared out because The Proletariat is dishing out so much local music goodness this weekend that we just don't know what to do with ourselves. Besides Friday's Fatal Flying Guilloteens and Co., the Pro serves up the always great Elaine Greer, the indomitable Hearts of Animals and the band formerly known as The Dimes on Saturday, February 2. Oh, and the Fiery Furnaces happen to play, too.

As you might have heard by now, after five excellent years or celebrating the local music scene in every shape, size, form and capacity, the Proletariat is closing. But it's not going out without a bang. Start the your mourning period on Friday when the Fatal Flying Guilloteens, Cop Warmth, O Pioneers!!! and Whorehound rule your senses.

If you fancy some Japanese rock, check out Fantasys Core tonight at Walter’s on Washington (our own Motion Turns It On opens). It’s been ten years since Shawn Mullins' “Lullaby” was a big hit. Mullins sound is more on the Americana/folk side these days, and you can hear for yourself tomorrow night at the Mucky Duck. Friday night, Warehouse Live has an eclectic mix of local music, including one of our favorites, Two Star Symphony. If you’d rather punk-out that night, head to Walter’s on Washington, where Something Fierce headlines. Finally, Kinky Friedman stops at the Duck on Saturday night. He’s not running for governor anymore, so he has little incentive to censor himself.

We mentioned it in our interview with Mlee Marie Suprean, but our favorite local music blog The Skyline Network just released the poster for the Hootenanny, which only further solidifies the fact that we have to be there.

When you first hear Katie voice, you know that you've hit the goldmine. That's probably why she quickly won local music awards not long after moving back to her hometown, Houston. Katie Stuckey and the Straggler, her band, will be performing tomorrow night at Rudyard's. It'll be a great show, and a good chance to see her in a smaller venue: We know she'll quickly outgrow these small venues. We bounced some questions off...

::FREE MUSIC MONDAY!:: Yep, two chances today to catch free music from two great local music organizations. Did we mention FREE? Thought so. Just checking. If you're calling it an early day at the office, or happen to be hanging around the Rice University campus at 4:00pm today, stop on by Brown Hall (Room 113) to experience a treat for your ears (and brains---which is technically a part of your ears.) Rice University Shepherd School...

Here are a few things that have been said about local rockers Southern Backtones. "The only way this could get any beautifully darker is if it grew black wings and flew away." - Ft. Worth Weekly "Alt-rock guitars, darkly poetic lyrics and a vocal style reminiscent of the mid-90s Britpop movement...the musicianship and songwriting on this effort are top notch. Highly recommended." - Exclaim! Canada's Music Authority "Smacks of mass appeal!" - Houston Press "If...

::Cactus Records Returns with Dia de Los Muertos Art Opening:: Yes, you read that right: Cactus Records Returns. You read the art opening part right, too. For the record. Heh. Pun totally intended. Tonight, Houston's most beloved local music emporium, Cactus Records, hosts a Dia de Los Muertos artist reception to kick-off it's much awaited return. Artist Carlos Hernandez will be displaying paintings featuring dead musicians in honor of the holiday. Johnny Cash, Kurt Cobain,...

The party is at Rudyard’s tomorrow – you know - THE party. The Black Math Experiment’s CD Release Party for “All You Need is Blood”, at which a couple of other bands will be performing. La Sed will bring some progressive rock courtesy of Puerto Rico and Mk Ultra adds politically-minded psychedelic punk to the mix (political as in the song writing may focus on fighting military culture and the 9/11 conspiracy). This should be...

::The Orange Show for Visionary Arts Concert Series:: We told you about this event in this week's Thriftster, but decided it was waaaaaay to cool not to be reminded of again. I mean, would you seriously know what to do if we didn't tell you these things? Don't answer that. Unless the answer is "No." This new concert series, co-sponsored by SugarHill Studios, is dedicated to showcasing musicians as original as the Orange Show...

Houstonist loves music. That’s why make our iMixes, keep you up-to-date on what shows are in town, share our favorite music videos with you, and even interview both local and national musicians. We know, however, that there are some fanatical music lovers out there that think we can do more (and we’re not disagreeing). That’s where our challenge comes in. We’re currently looking for more music contributors. What’s required, you say? First off, you...

Chicagoist is gearing up for this weekend's annual Air & Water Show along the lakefront. In what's becoming an annual tradition around there, staff member Todd McClamroch even got to fly with one of the participants. Chicagoist's decidedly opinionated readership was also appalled that one of their staffers found a popular local brewpub to be a great place to bring a kid. They also think that an unlikely activist for immigration rights should just take...

Kevin Russell Performs Solo Show with Fried Ice Cream at Under The Volcano A big thanks to one of our loyal readers, Chris Sarrat, for bringing this awesome event on our radar. If you have not heard the new Gourds record, you'll be surprised to hear horns on the first cut "How Will You Shine." Tonight, Houston-based 9-piece funk, R&B, and jazz group Fried Ice Cream's horn section will be playing with The Gourds' singer...

Last night, Warehouse Live played host to the annual Houston Press Music Awards. Houstonist was there to absorb all of the entertainment and was treated to some of the best local music around. The Dimes (pictured above) walked away as big winners, with three awards – Best New Act, Best Indie Rock, and Song of the Year, for “Delilah,” which they performed on stage midway through the night. Other performers included Million Year Dance...

HMNS Hosts Mixers & Elixirs Can't decide whether to see a movie, get a drink, go to the musuem, or see some live music tonight? Why decide? Do it all the the Museum of Natural Science's Summer Series "Mixers & Elixirs." Each Friday night during the summer, the museum hosts a gang of party goers in a true social science experiment. Mixers & Elixirs features cocktails, dancing under the dinosaurs, an IMAX movie each hour,...

Local Folk muscian, Jana Hunter and fellow folk artist Castanets had some equipment stolen during a tour stop in Tucson, AZ. The skinny is: gig over, unsecured rental van suffers door damage, Ray sleeps in van, ballsy criminals make off with what gear they can carry - local artist and friends stand to be out a fair amount of cash. Houstonist is a big fan of local music and supporting local artists. For example, we...

Looking for something to do this weekend? Look no further than, well, just keep looking at what your reading. Two great festivals begin this weekend, and both continue next weekend. Lucky you. Double your pleasure, double the fun. Houston International Festival: iFest Spotlights China Sorry if you missed the Houstonist ticket giveaway, we are all out. But you can still see some of the greatest acts visiting Houston this year for only $10. A steal!...

Slugs and Bruises!! Flat Track Action begins this Sunday with "Spring Fling" the first official bout! Houstonist is jazzed about the second season of roller derby! The exhibition bouts in the Verizon proved to us that the visibility is indeed very, very good. The action was even better, with the rookies looking very un-rookie-like and some having major talent (Rookie Savage Rose is a fantastic jammer - bodies just fly out of her path) and...

Here are some upcoming shows who's tickets recently went on sale: Seal - 5/29 @ Verizon Wireless Theater Beyonce - 7/14 @ Toyota Center Rush - 8/14 @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Great week of concerts for alternative and independent music lovers. Yo La Tengo, who's latest CD was one of our favorites last year (and our favorite album title), comes to Warehouse LIve on Friday. They have some competition that night, though: TV...

Living With War: The Black Angels / VietNam Official After Party @ Jet Lounge As you learned in yesterday's Music Calendar, some of Houstonist's favorite sounds will be making an appearance tonight at Warehouse Live. Fresh off of SXSW, Austin's The Black Angels and The Fader's recent obsession, VietNam, play tonight, with locals Flowers to Hide supporting. Following the sure-to-be-stellar show, Squad Car Media hosts the Official After Party for both bands at nearby...

Houstonist has just about recovered from last night's Light Rail Pub Crawl, so now we're ready to enjoy this beautiful weather and catch the 3rd Annual Rockin' for Rise concert. We told you about the event several days ago on our Live Music Calendar, and it's one that you shouldn't miss. The benefit music showcase kicked off last night at the Hard Rock Cafe and continues today at the Last Concert Cafe, starting now and...

This year's music line-up for April's International Festival has been announced. It includes some alt.country, funk, blues, reggae, folk, cajun, and traditional African music. So what's this year's theme? You guessed it: China. Actually, the folks at iFest are good about booking a diverse array of musicians, no matter what the theme is. This year's headliner is one of our favorite singer/songwriters from the south: Lucinda Williams. 54 year-old Williams just released her first album...
