Today's Friday Afternoon Video takes a trip down memory lane to 1989, when Madonna was at her peak -- both musically and artistically -- before the long, sad slide into The English Roses, Kabbalah and excess botox. Houstonist remembers the release of Like A Prayer as if it were yesterday: the haunting organ and gospel choir, her strikingly beautiful brunette hair in the video, the evocative images of a black Christ, and -- of course -- the Pepsi commercial controversy that nearly overshadowed the song itself.

Yesterday, members of the Caribbean Impact Foundation, a local non-profit organization, stood before the International Liaison and Protocol Committee to request that the city name this week Caribbean Relief Week due to the devastating effects Hurricane Dean had on many Caribbean nations. The mayor issued the proclamation and encouraged Houstonians to do what they can to aid the relief work: Houstonians have always shown a big heart in times of need, and I know they...

There are some restaurants we go to because we love the food and others because we like the décor and atmosphere. Jenni’s Noodle House is neither but we love going here because we like how it makes us feel. This popular downtown lunch hot spot is quirky and personable. Devoted patrons almost seem to carry a badge of honor after a meal at Jenni’s. Owners Scott and Jenni imprint their personality throughout their humble restaurant....

Banner week for SFist as the site's new editor introduced himself -- hooray for Brock! While the NY Times weighed in on SF's mayoral race, only SFist had the (insert tongue firmly into cheek) hard-hitting latest on candidate/activist Josh Wolf. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: video of a man that confused a Board of Supes meeting with "open mic...

Bizarre news from Sharpstown Center: Yesterday afternoon, a security guard at the mall shot another security guard, then went to his car and shot himself in the head. Investigators are still trying to figure out exactly how it all started; fortunately, neither man died, and both are recovering at Ben Taub.

Happy Holidays! Chances are, you're reading this the day after Christmas, back at your day job after all-too-short a holiday, and the last thing you want from us is stuff about the holidays. But that's just too bad. Because, see, here in the Ist-A-Verse, we do things ahead of time. It might be December 26 for you, but that's what you get for not checking your Favorite Local Blog on Christmas Eve. Austinist is...

The Queen of Pop has just announced her tour dates for the "Confessions" spring tour, and she'll be hitting all the major cities — L.A., New York, Philly, Chicago, Miami, Boston. Heck, Madonna's even taking her pointy boobs to Phoenix, Fresno, Hartford and San Jose ... but not Houston. Houstonist isn't a diehard Madge fan, but we're curious enough that we might check out her show if she came to town. But now, we're kinda wondering if we like her at all.
