We realized today that it wasn't this balmy, pathetic excuse for weather that was depressing us, but the extremely low levels of breakfast taco in our blood. You see, we had the fortune of spending the last 6+ years in a magical faraway land where you can't walk ten yards without tripping over a breakfast taco, and we've come to rely on this humble meal for energy, strength, and even happiness. We immediately looked up the nearest taco location on our Gastronomic Positioning System and soon found ourselves at Tacos A Go-Go.

We wouldn't go quite so far as to say that every day is an anniversary of 9/11, but there are several events happening around the city today to remember 9/11 and its victims. So hit them up, whether you're a firefighter, a civilian, or a troofer. >> Houston Fire Museum dedicates new statue: The Houston Fire Museum will dedicate a new statue titled "In the Line of Fire" to honor firefighters everywhere. The sculpture will...

In honor of the upcoming Dia de los Muertos (in November, yes) the Lawndale Art Center is giving out retablo tins for area artists to decorate for a silent auction benefiting Lawndale programs. Retablos are small traditional Mexican paintings of saints and religious imagery, although we've seen punk rock, KISS and Paul Frank retablos in our day as well. Wannabe retablo artists need only pick swing by Lawndale (4912 Main St.) and grab one for...

That's right, our favorite technology radio show, Technology Bytes, turns 12 this month! (the exact date seems to be lost by everyone on the show. hmmm, guess it wasn't on their Google Calendar.) Dean's is smoke-free for your breathing pleasure, and there will...

The drive-by shooting that killed a 13-year-old Houston middle school student early Saturday morning was likely a case of mistaken identity stemming from a pair of gang fights, police said yesterday. HPD Sgt. Brian Harris said there had been two large gang-related fights at the Butler Skating Rink, 14083 Main St., where Cornisha McCowan and friends attended a dance Friday night. At around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, McCowan's brother-in-law, Sam Monroe, picked McCowan and his stepdaughter...

Given how much Houstonist loves a good bank robbery story, we don't know how we missed the news item last week about an exceptionally courteous man who knocked over a downtown bank branch Friday afternoon. According to KHOU, the guy walked into the Amegy Bank at 1801 Main St. around 1:30 p.m. Friday and waited in line at a teller window; when he got to the front, he handed the teller a note demanding cash....

Happy V.D., kids. We want you to know that we too are sick of hearing about Lurlene's bouquet of Tasmanian orchids. And, yes, we've already puked in the lobby ficus after some jackass in the elevator broadcast the fact that his vapid squeeze du jour, SaNdi (with a heart dot), ventured out in her Hummer to combat the sub-40 degree weather and bring him a half-caff-double-extra-fat super-no-balls cup of mango scented chai crap after their morning wood fest. Houstonist felt you needed a nice pick-me-up to combat your annual V.D. Funk.

We all have certain words that offend us, right? So we go through life not using those words and hoping other people will extend us the same courtesy — but that's not enough for Ken Corley, the mayor of Brazoria, who is leading a charge to outlaw use of the word "nigger" in his city. If Corley's proposal becomes a city ordinance, certain uses of the word within Brazoria's city limits would be punishable by a fine of up to $500.

Is it just us? Or have there been an unusual amount of beer events in the city lately? From beer on a house to beer for dinner, and even....building houses for beer? But who are we to buck the system? If you can't beat 'em..... Our favorite downtown beer emporium, Flying Saucer, hosts a beer tasting tonight as part of it's U.F.O club, Beerknurds. Special guest speaker will be Todd Usry, Brewmaster of Breckenridge...

Metrorail service changes are at a minimum, but keep these in mind:

We're just a little over two months away from Election Day 2006. (It’s on Nov. 7), which means we can expect to see a lot more of the candidates in the next few weeks. Today, independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Kinky Friedman hits town in the midst of his college tour — he's making a stop today at the University of Houston, and then tonight, you can catch him at the Flying Saucer downtown. Nothing...

There are a couple reasons Original New Orleans Po-boys owner Pete Hope gives for why he is suddenly closing up shop on Main St. after decades of serving everything from sandwiches to pancakes; the $5,000 a month rent is a burden, and even more so because of the dwindling number of customers - according to Pete, the rail line put him out of business. Pam McClosky, a customer-turned-worker, said: Once the rail came, people couldn't...
