Jugglers, performers on stilts, dancing girls, horn players, a bass player, drummers and percussionist all converged on Market Square as the sun went down for a little free early evening entertainment. It was Portland's own MarchFourth Marching Band who provided Friday nights free show and we posted about them earlier in the day. So we took our own advice and headed down there to catch this unique and highly entertaining show. As we strolled... more ›

Ok, so it’s been like eight years since American Pie came out. Can you believe it? We know, we’re so old. It was a totally different decade then. A forgotten, distant time in our culture. An innocent age when we’d not yet seen Tara Reid’s, well, pretty much everything. A time when most of us had never heard the term MILF. A time when Eugene Levy had not yet sold his once funny soul to... more ›

Remember the 37-story apartment tower announced last May for a block overlooking Discovery Green? KHOU reports that foundation work began this weekend, when about 800 cement trucks dumped their contents into the big hole at the corner of Austin at Lamar. And downtown observers are all atwitter: "I think that Houston will see a lot more residential development downtown. I think this is a lead project for many to come," said architect Jeffrey Ryan... more ›

Let's think back a few years to the late 1990s, when Houston's downtown revitalization was beginning in earnest and a variety of bars, restaurants, clubs and entertainment venues were opening in the area that once was a virtual no-man's-land after business hours. Everything seemed like it was going well for a while — Bayou Place was developed, the baseball stadium opened, old buildings were being restored, some great businesses popped up — and then, over... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Today's question: How cool are you? According to Ken Hoffman, the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau is trying to find the 10 coolest people in Houston to form a focus group that'll help promote the city. Hoffman saw the list of nominees and wasn't impressed — but seriously, when was the last time anyone was impressed by one of the GHCVB's marketing plans? So here's the deal: If you can... more ›

Before Midtown became a buzz word and velvet ropes infiltrated the area, Leon's Lounge was serving beer and booze in the soft glow of chandeliers. In fact, word on the street is that it's 1953 establishment date makes it one of the oldest watering holes in town, second to La Carafe. The location can't be beat for convenience. Situated just outside of downtown at McGowen and Main Street, Leon's is spitting distance from the McGowen... more ›

At times, we've looked at all the apartments going in downtown and wondered how many people actually lived there. The answer, according to the Chronicle, is quite a few: The occupancy rate for downtown apartments is 89 percent and seems to be growing. That's up 6 percent over last year; by contrast, demand for apartments citywide decreased by 1.7 percent in the last 12 months. The main reason: convenience. "Our kids are grown and gone,"... more ›

Did you know Houston has one of the largest St. Patrick's Day parades in the country? Ah, if you didn't, head downtown tomorrow and catch the 47th annual St. Pat's parade, which will feature more than 125 floats, marching bands, City Council members and ... Irish lawyers? They're not the ones who ride around in those tiny cars, are they? The parade will start at 2 p.m. at Texas and Hamilton, in front of... more ›

You might have heard about the GoogleCenter of the universe, which Wired reported on Wednesday — that's the spot you find if you zoom as close as you can on the default Google map. Turns out it's a field near Coffeyville, Kansas. Naturally, the -ists jumped on the bandwagon by finding the GoogleCenters of their hometowns: Gothamist did it first, and then Bostonist, Chicagoist, DCist and Seattlest followed suit. So Houstonist is a little... more ›
