Jurors heard opening arguments yesterday in the murder trial of Ashley Benton, the girl accused of stabbing a 14-year-old gang member to death at Chew Park near Montrose last summer. When 23-year-old Claudia Cortes arrived by ambulance at Ben Taub on Sunday morning, nurses at the hospital noticed that she looked like she had just given birth — but Cortes insisted she hadn't. So police went to her apartment in the 5100 block of South Willow to check things out and were shocked by what they found: what seemed to be a full-term newborn baby was hidden in a closet in the apartment. Though the identity of the body found in the garage of a Midtown home last weekend hasn't officially been released, The Facts is reporting that it may be that of 28-year-old Jerry Glaspie, a former Danbury resident. Laura Glaspie, Jerry Glaspie's sister-in-law, told the paper that the family got confirmation from police late last week. "It's traumatic. No doubt in our mind he was murdered," Laura Glaspie said. The prosecution in the Andrea Yates retrial rested its case yesterday after its final witness, medical examiner Dr. Luis Sanchez, testified further about the condition of the bodies of Yates' children after she drowned them in her Clear Lake home in June 2001.
