Good morning, Houston. If you've lived here a while, you probably know that the city is prone to livestock running amok — so it shouldn't be too surprising that Third Ward residents found a pair of ewes loose in their neighborhood yesterday. Some neighbors and a KTRK crew tried to catch the animals and eventually chased them to the TSU campus, where a Harris County sheriff's deputy and KTRK photographer Ben Lutman made a...

Good morning, Houston. We were going to begin the day talking about how American Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar finally got voted off the show last night, but then we ran across this item: Wednesday was the 30th birthday of KTRK's Live at Five afternoon newscast. Big deal, you say? Why yes, it is — because, thanks to Channel 13, you can watch the very first episode of the show, from April 18, 1977. Dave...
A woman had to be rescued from her car Thursday morning after she drove into a lake, apparently because she was talking on her cell phone and didn't notice the road had ended. It happened around 9:30 a.m. at Oregold and Sunbright, just off Eldridge Parkway in northwest Harris County; police say the woman, Yu Hee Kim, drove her 2001 Lexus over a curb, across a grassy expanse and into one of the manmade lakes...
Holiday shopping came to a screeching halt yesterday evening at Memorial City when an ammonia leak forced shoppers to drop their packages and flee the mall. It happened around 6 p.m. when ammonia fumes escaped from a maintenance room near the mall's ice rink (the ammonia is used to make the ice); an alarm was sounded and parts of the building was evacuated. Fortunately, it turned out to be no big deal:
Remember John Sheroke, the Katy man who was arrested last month after trying to hire a hitman to murder his wife? It seems he just can't get the Mrs. out of his mind: Sheroke has been sent back to jail for sending his wife a birthday present, which violated a judge's order. Oops.
Speaking of weird news — we were, weren't we? — how about the story of John Sheroke, the former physician's assistant who tried to hire a hitman to kill his doctor wife? Call us old-fashioned, but we thought calling an assassin wasn't the appropriate course of action when you're having marital problems. Then again, we're not married, so what do we know?
Sad news from the old Town & Country Mall: A construction worker was killed yesterday when an overhead walkway collapsed between a parking garage and the former Neiman Marcus store. It happened just after 4:30 p.m.; according to KHOU, crews demolishing the overhead walkway cut a support beam, causing the structure to fall on the worker.
If you're looking for a reason to brave the Katy Freeway this weekend, we might have found one: The Rockettes will be at Memorial City on Saturday. We're feeling more like New York every day! The high-stepping dance group will be in town to help Macy's celebrate its takeover of our nation's retailers — Saturday is the day Foley's officially stops being Foley's and becomes a part of the Federated conglomerate (along with a bunch...
The newest gigantic medical tower in town won't be built in the Medical Center. Instead, Memorial Hermann's new 35-story tower will go up at Memorial City, which developers are saying could be the next Uptown. The $335 million, 915,000-square-foot building will include 15 floors of inpatient and 20 floors of outpatient services and will allow the Memorial Hermann system to consolidate all its employees at its Memorial City campus.
Have you ever needed — and we use that term loosely, because we know how easily "need" turns to "want" — something from the Apple store, but you didn't want to deal with Galleria traffic? Well, soon you'll have the opportunity to deal with Katy Freeway traffic insead: Apple is opening a new store at Memorial City this weekend. The grand opening is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, just in time to pick something up...
Police are looking for four or five suspects who helped themselves to some jewelry today at a jewelry store in Memorial City Mall.
Sure, Roger Clemens gave the Astros the disguised finger, but that doesn't mean he harbors any ill will toward the Bayou City. On the contrary, he's going to give us just what we need: a restaurant. Some time in May, the pitching phenom will open Roger Clemens' Rocket Sports Grill in Memorial City Mall, not far from his Memorial area home. Clemens won't just slap his name on the place and stay away, according to...
