Our beloved football soccer club, the Dynamo, are in a bit of a slump at the moment having lost 5 out of their last 6 games (remind you of anyone?). However this isn’t getting in the way of the Dynamo reaching out to the community. Starting this Sunday the Dynamo will be participating in the US Soccer Passback program. This is a grassroots campaign intended to provide new & gently used soccer equipment to “at-risk” communities for youth soccer programs.

Good morning, Houston. We hope you got your fill of the Texas Legislature, because the 80th session is officially over. Your Senators and Representatives have been hard at work since January, passing lots of bills and making even more news, and now they'll be taking a break. The Houston contingent did us proud, from strip club taxes to baby-selling to overcoming liver transplants. We hope all the Texas political blogs can survive until 2009....
El-P Performs at Numbers Tonight Happy Memorial Day, folks. If you are like us, your would like to negotiate for another weekend without so much rain. We are preparing the petition. Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor sanctamonius. A fitting photo for this Memorial Day. Did you know Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day and originally honored Civil War deaths. After World War I it was expanded to include all those that have died in service to this country.
All across the Ist-A-Verse (or at least the American parts thereof), writers and editors are in the midst of enjoying their three-day weekend. But after the week we've all had, we feel like the break is not only needed, but deserved. Just look at everything we've been doing! Gothamist headed into the Memorial Day weekend with a number of tasks accomplished. They worried about Long Islanders giving New Yorkers a bad name. They tried...
Good morning, Houston. It's Friday again — the Friday before Memorial Day, to be exact. Check it out, enjoy, and have an excellent holiday. >> Microwaved baby's father drops opposition to foster care: Joshua Mauldin, the man accused...

Houstonist has seen them: crawling around the bathroom, flitting through doors, hovering in the kitchen. And Houstonist has felt them: at dusk, after a rain, or mysteriously, in the middle of the afternoon. The bugs have returned in force, and we recommend you do something about them. Educate: The Texas Bug Book: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is a top-notch tome, with up-close pictures and information on life cycles, habitats, economic importance,...
Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. Last night, I went out with some friends for a few drinks. Since when has Cinco de Mayo become such a big drinking event? It’s not even a major holiday in Mexico. As long as Dilettante has been aware of Cinco de Mayo, it has been a drinking holiday. But it does seem to be turning into more and more of an excuse...
Timothy Randle, one of the five suspects charged in a crime spree that left three people dead, is accused of three counts of capital murder — but he said from his jail cell Tuesday that police have it all wrong. Randle, 18, claims he was nearby when Maria Chrisalee Aparece and Huy Ngo were murdered, but he didn't do it. In a phone interview with KPRC, Randle said he followed other suspects who carjacked Aparece...
If you were out of town yesterday and missed our fantastic Memorial Day weather, there's good news: We might have an encore today! Warm, moist coastal air have led the National Weather Service to forecast a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, and a flood watch is in effect until 4 p.m. for the Houston area. Because rain yesterday saturated the ground and raised water levels in the bayous, we could...
In what legal analysts are calling a "slam dunk" for the prosecution, the jury in the trial of Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling found the former Enron executives guilty of charges relating to securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy this morning after just more than five days of deliberation.
Visitors to Bolivar Peninsula may have to pay a $10 fee to park at the beach beginning this summer under a propsal being considered by the state. Revenue from sales of the $10 annual permits will go back into beach cleaning, security and goodies like portable toilets. And despite the fact that the plan has the support of the local chamber of commerce, some peninsula merchants aren't so sure it's a good thing:
