We figured it was worth recapping the traffic closures coming downtown in the next couple of days as part of the Freedom Over Texas celebration — so if you're planning to drive that way, pay attention: As of 10 a.m. today, the exit ramps to Allen Parkway from I-45 north- and southbound are closed, as is the ramp from Walker Avenue to Allen Parkway. The inbound lanes of Allen Parkway are closed at Taft and... more ›
So it's almost time for Chevy's Freedom over Texas, the city's July 4 celebration — and that means some traffic changes you'll want to know about, beginning this weekend. One change in the festival plans is the result of all the rainy weather we've been having lately: The main stage will move from the south bank of Buffalo Bayou, where it's usually located, to the inbound lanes of Allen Parkway and the feeder road... more ›
A couple of weeks ago, Houstonist was downtown and noticed a film crew setting up lights, cameras — and, presumably, action — at the corner of Louisiana and Rusk. We wondered in passing what was going on, but we figured it was just Time Warner shooting another of its asinine commercials with a guy in a space suit or a businessman who says "Click! Boom!" for half an hour. In reality, though, what we... more ›

Here's a joke waiting to be told: What would soldiers and Marines want with silly string, bubble gum and pantyhose? Go ahead, take your best shot. We'll give you a second to think it over. (In the meantime, have you heard the one about the duck that walks into a drugstore ... ?) Seriously, though — the silly string, bubble gum and pantyhose were part of military supply kits that kids at Memorial Drive Elementary... more ›

We were still feeling kind of bad about last week's shelterporn feature, the regrettable, vaguely Mediterranean townhome in the West End — so we decided to make up for it this week by finding some decent Mediterranean architecture. What we came up with is this Memorial Drive home, where we think Norma Desmond would feel right at home. more ›
Under questioning in the first day of the mayor's daughter's DWI trial, the Harris County deputy who arrested Elena White testified yesterday that he made some mistakes, including letting another deputy constable block the view from the camera mounted in his patrol car while White was taking field sobriety tests. Good morning, Houston. We're still a little foggy from yesterday's Super Bowl parties — and from the point in the second quarter when we started thinking about when we might see the Texans in the big game (don't try it — it'll make your head hurt, trust us). If you got your no-more-football party on, this might not be a bad time to kick back, down a hangover cure and catch up on some... more ›

Elena White, the mayor's 17-year-old daughter who was arrested last week for a possible DWI, appeared in court this morning and got a little defense from her mom. Andrea White echoed what her husband, Bill, said last week about the incident: "Elena is a responsible adult and she was driving home from a friend's house in the neighborhood before 11 p.m.," Andrea White said. "We've, as you can imagine, had long conversations with our daughter... more ›
Yesterday morning, we talked about Mayor Bill White's 17-year-old daughter, Elena, getting arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated. It seemed innocuous enough at first: The mayor said she made a bad decision and that he was glad she was safe. But by the end of the day, White had changed his tune a little: Now he says his daughter doesn't think she was drunk and the arrest might have been a mistake. Elena White was... more ›
So one bad thing about being an elected official's kid is that, if you screw up, everyone finds out about it. Elena White should know: The mayor's 17-year-old daughter was arrested early this morning for allegedly driving while intoxicated. It happened at about 12:15 a.m. in the 9800 block of Memorial Drive, within a mile of the White house. According to KPRC, Elena White was pulled over because her headlights weren't on; she failed a... more ›

According to KTRK, those who live near the train - primarily in West University and Bellaire - will... more ›

Mayor Bill will get the new year started by being inaugurated to his second term on Tuesday. Everything about the event screams "party": an inaugural address, guest speakers, Yolanda Adams. Where do we sign up? Unfortunately, Houstonist didn't get an invitation, but we'll be able to appreciate it nevertheless by altering our morning traffic plans. The inauguration will take place at the Police Officer Memorial on Memorial Drive, which means the inbound side of... more ›
