Most Memphis Tigers fans consider tonight's game against Houston just another bump in the road to a perfect season, but to Houston head coach Tom Penders, tonight's match-up against No. 1 Memphis could be the key to unlocking their ticket to the NCAA Tournament with an upset win.

From local Houston headlines, we bring you these weekend news bits...

It's no secret that there are many in the Houston sports scene who feel that the decision to trade the rights to one Rudy Gay to Memphis in return for perennial role player Shane Battier was a mistake. Rudy Gay is, in his second year, averaging 19.7 points and 4.2 rebounds. Last night the two had a chance to go head to head when the Rockets visited FedEx Forum. Fortunately for Rocket fans, Gay racked...

Good morning, Houston. These days, when everyone and their dog has a computer, it's getting harder to remember the days when all "official" writing was done on typewriters. The practical modern typewriter was invented in 1868 by an engineer named Christopher Latham Sholes, but it wasn't until 121 years ago today — Sept. 14, 1886 — that George K. Anderson of Memphis got a patent for the typewriter ribbon. They were originally made of...

With Harry Potter on the brain, we realized it's been awhile since we strolled into McGonigel'ss for some good ole open mic fun. Every Tuesday night at the Mucky Duck, signers and songwriters fill up the small, cozy Greenway Plaza pub with the sounds of acoustic guitars and tapping feet. Tonights songwriters include Shake Russell, Jed & Kelly, and Mary Cutrufello. From Bar Harbor, Maine to Santa Fe, New Mexico; from Los Angeles, California to...

If you're not too excited already about the Dynamo and the Texans, check it out: two Houston football teams combined forces this weekend to make UH the champions in the West Division of Conference USA. The Cougars did their part by rallying in the second half to defeat SMU in Dallas. But Rice pulled out an improbable win over second-place Tulsa in double-overtime to insure the division title for the Coogs. UH will travel to...

The Dixie Chicks' new album Taking the Long Way is appropriately titled, considering the winding route their tour has taken — particularly if you're in Houston. The Chicks have officially announced that they are cancelling a number of tour dates including the stop at the Toyota Center originally scheduled for Sept. 30. Other cities on the tour that have had shows cancelled include Kansas City, Memphis, St. Louis and Knoxville; the band is pushing back...

So the Dixie Chicks have a new album that tons of people are buying, and they are becoming more popular/notorious every day. That would seem like good fuel to sell scores of tickets for venues on their tour, right? Apparently not, at least in the United States. Houston, along with St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Indianapolis, and Memphis have either been cancelled or postponed due to lack of ticket demand. St. Louis' Savvis Center website reads:...

LAist has so much fun this week! They go to E3, where they overhear the timeless remark "Man, this is where nerdy girls get laid." Is that a promise? They also give us this week's best CDs and make us realize that LA is the best place to use Zillow. Ah, Houstonist. They're biking to work, that is, if they can figure out how to get there. That's right, Mapquest says "Houston had the...

A new documentary film by Robert Mugge features displaced musicians from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina including legendary band leader, Kermit Ruffins (pictured right), who now resides in Houston. Mugge visited Houston, Austin and Memphis in search of NOLA musicians who left because of Katrina.

The 2006 Winter Olympics ended Sunday. Did you notice? Apparently, not many Americans concerned themselves with their skiing, skating and curling brethren: According to Nielsen, nightly television ratings for the 2006 games were the lowest in recent history. NBC and its cable networks pulled a 12.2 Nielsen rating and a 19 share for its nightly coverage of the Olympics — an average of 20.2 million viewers per night. That's down from the 19.2 rating and 31 share the 2002 Salt Lake games drew. NBC's total viewership for this year's Olympics was 184 million, down 3 million from 2002. The previous low rating for a winter Olympics was in 1968, when the games in Grenoble, France, got a 13.4/21 Nielsen rating.

• Most of us weren't surprised that the No. 2 Texas Longhorns beat the Colorado Buffaloes in the Big 12 Championship game at Reliant Stadium on Saturday. What was a surprise was the score: 70-3. The decisive victory gives the 'Horns their first Big 12 title since 1996 and gives them a chance to earn their first undisputed national championship since 1969. But at this point, the 'Horns might want to think less about flashing...
