Daily-ist Tuesday: Conservation at The Menil

Houstonians curious about the more technical aspects of the arts might be interested in a lecture tonight at The Menil Collection by Chief Conservator Brad Epley. Epley will talk about the field of conservation, and how it relates specifically to contemporary art. He'll also discuss new conservation techniques and steps take over the past year to preserve works included in The Menil Collection.

Yes, we know. Valentine's Day is a made-up holiday, with FTD, Hallmark and the world's chocolate producers all in on the conspiracy. Be that as it may, many of us will still be expected to come up with some kind of romantic outing, and Houstonist is here to help you pull it off without emptying your wallet. We put together three date ideas for under $50 that we're certain will win you brownie points and plenty of kisses.

You may have noticed that Google's masthead is different today. That, in and of itself, isn't noteworthy; Google routinely changes their masthead to celebrate a variety of holidays -- recognized or not -- and sometimes just on a whim. But if you're wondering about today's masthead design with the iconic green apple and man in a bowler hat, let Houstonist illuminate you.

For the next two Friday evenings, the Museum of Fine Arts will be showing The Cool School. Jeff Bridge narrates this award winning film that tells the story of Walter Hopps, the first director of the Menil Collection and an American art icon. Hopps, together with partner Ed Kienholz, created Ferus Gallery - a seminal force in the development of LA's postwar art scene. The provocative and dynamic works sparked controversy, dialog and, consequently, development...

Tonight, Da Camera has put together an incredible line-up of twentieth century musical works, all of which were inspired by works of art -- namely, works of art by artists represented in the Menil Collection. This is going to be a knock-out concert. John Zorn *and* Arvo Pärt! Paul Klee *and* Joseph Cornell! Houstonist is a little giddy at the thought. Here's the program: Paul Dessau ~ Guernica (after Picasso) Stefan Wolpe ~ To Anna...

Good morning, Houston. Are you registered to vote? Do you need to make changes to your registration? Better take care of it fast: Today is the last day to register or alter your registration if you want to vote in the Nov. 6 elections. Voters in 34 jurisdictions will elect candidates this year, and the state has 16 bond issues on the ballot — and, of course, there are big-ticket items like HISD's $805...

As you may already know, the de Menils had one of the best modern art collections of the twentieth century, and Houston is lucky enough to get to see the work regularly, for free, at the museum they built for it. However, you may not have known that the de Menils were also generous enough to give away dozens of pieces to major art institutions all over the world. Now, in celebration of the...

If we had a million dollars, we'd definitely party with people whose names we recognize from buildings all over town: the Sarofims, the Hobbys, etc. Unfortunately, running a popular city blog doesn't pay as well as it should, so we'll have to sit out the Menil's 20th Anniversary Masked Ball tonight. And unless you can scrounge up $1500 real quick, you will be too. Unless President Carter or the French ambassador will let you sit...

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor Stephen Bridges who gives us this green view of the exterior of Richmond Hall. More on the death of Robin Utterback, the Houston artist who died after his Montrose home/studio burned Thursday: Police now say Utterback's roommate stabbed him, set the fire and then threw himself in front of a train. Firefighters responding to reports of the fire at the studio, 2311 Grant St., on Thursday evening found Utterback inside; a few hours later, police found Clifford David Gaylord, the roommate, seriously injured near the train tracks at 100 Heights Blvd. The two died within minutes of each other.

And so we have some final-ish alignment options for Metro's University light rail line: All of them would begin at MetroRail's Wheeler Station on Main Street and head west along Richmond Avenue for some distance, and all would avoid Afton Oaks, which has been a loudly squeaking wheel in the planning process. But that's pretty much where the similarities end: • The first proposal would turn south on Montrose Boulevard, then west on an elevated...

We thought we’d try a different approach to our music calendar – giving you a few of our picks and a listing of other concerts for the week. If you have a concert suggestion (especially local bands), please e-mail us. The biggest shows of the week belong to The Who and The Pretenders, back in Houston after a long absence. Aerosmith and Motley Crue come to town this weekend, too, but those bands seem...

Hello Houstonians! Here's what's on tap.... Friday, November 3 For all your possibly-pretentious dance needs, the Hope Stone dance troupe will respond to the work of Paul Klee through dance over at the Menil Collection (one of Houston's hidden treasures--you must go if you haven't been. We're serious, we're requiring it.) The performance will be in Richmond Hall @ The Menil (1500 Richmond) at 7:30 pm. It's free, and a talk follows the performance. Saturday,...

Houstonist and Houston Photobloggers recently held our first joint photo contest to find out what everyone loves about Houston. We had a lot of great entries and want to thank everyone who shared their photos and stories with us. Below are the winning photos and the accompanying explanations from the photographers, followed by info about the people who took these shots. Next week, we'll include some other great shots that earned an honorable mention. Untitled...

Best news of the weekend so far, at least for local readers: 14 Brazos Bookstore customers have banded together to buy the store and keep it open. Houstonist is so happy we could cry — except that would be a little odd. We heard earlier this year about how Karl Killian, who has owned the Brazos since 1974, had taken a job with the Menil Collection that would require him to sell or close the...

The Menil Collection is known for the private art collection of John and Dominique de Menil, along with some of the best surrealist art in the world. This weekend, you can add a new twist to Menil’s programs, with the second edition of New Orleans Jazz on the museum grounds. This Sunday afternoon, the New Birth Brass Band will bring their unique version of New Orleans jazz to the museum. The critically acclaimed band fuses...

We don't like the outlook for independent music and book retailers in Houston: First Cactus announced it will close, and now the Brazos Bookstore may follow suit. Brazos owner Karl Kilian recently accepted a job as director of programs at the Menil Collection, and his hiring agreement stipulates that he must sell the store. The price is between $275,000 and $300,000, and Killan told the Chronicle the time frame for making the sale is "very...

The national media occasionally forgets about everything it criticizes Houston for — sprawl, smog, oil, heat, bugs, lack of topography, Enron — and admits, though sometimes begrudgingly, that our fair city ain't such a bad place after all. The latest such nod is from the AP, which is carrying a story touting Houston as a budget vacation spot. "There's lots of Texas-size fun to be had for less than $20 in the nation's fourth largest...
