It's everybody's favorite technology writer and author, Dwight Silverman of The Chronicle and Technology Bytes fame striking a pose in the bowels of the Chronicle building in front of the old presses. We've long known that Houston was a popular place for singles to relocate (and rightly so), but here's some new news: according to this map, we've got more than our fair share of single men. A LOT more than our fair share - that big blue dot = 20,000 - 40,000 more single men than women. Men in Austin and the DFW metropolis suffer similarly. So why the disparity? Creative Class commenters had a few... more ›

We'd like to start this week's run-down by wishing a very happy birthday to parent blog Gothamist, which turned four on Friday. If it wasn't for them, the rest of us wouldn't be here. They celebrated their birthday by nabbing an interview with Entourage star Adrian Grenier, who misses NYC public transportation when he's working in LA. They also reported on NYU students protesting a band whose name is also known as a slur,... more ›

On Tuesday, the American -ists will be celebrating democracy and hitting the polls, letting politicians know what they really think. It just made us wonder: if it were up to the -ist-a-verse, what would we be voting for? Londonist votes for better skincare, alternative spaces for art, cute little birds and the men who keep them, and concrete. Lots of concrete. Shanghaiist votes for one of the Bee Gees and Air Supply (it's a double-ticket),... more ›

So now we're scared: either shell out the $ for upgrades or a whole new system, or try it on our machines as-is, knowing that our computing experience would probably be the equivalent of running in a swimming pool filled with syrup during a hurricane. Maybe we'll just stick to XP for now...after all, aren't the bugs almost all worked out? more ›

Massachusets Institute of Technology professor Nicholas Negroponte wants every child to have a $100 laptop to promote and inspire education. Despite facing continued criticism from Intel and Microsoft, Negroponte has some huge backers on his side — Google, Quanta Computer and News Corp. (and Rupert Murdoch), to name a few — which have contributed $29 million for Negroponte's One Laptop Per Child Nonprofit Association. The modified laptop would use just 2 watts of electricity, which is one-tenth of what conventional laptops use — early plans for hand cranks on the side of the machines have been scrapped, and the computers will now be able to connect to AC adapters. Despite the criticism, though, Negroponte said his group could begin distributing computers by early next year. more ›

DCist helps us make more sense of the world this week. Posts like this concert review are the reason for Scott Stapp. DCist also enumerates the reasons for playing ultimate frisbee, Condi’s tight buns, their love of a local convenience store, and their jealousy of a person in Seattle calling the city. LAist documented graf artist Banksy’s most recent visit to LA in one two three posts. They also found the best possible use for... more ›

Microsoft has unveiled what could be the next wave in semi-pointless online mapping features: the Windows Live Local driving mode, which lets you "drive" around downtown Seattle or San Francisco with three street-level views and an aerial shot. For Houstonist, who hasn't been to Seattle in a while, taking a virtual tour was kind of nostalgic. We were able to visit some of our favorite spots, and we think we even saw a few people wearing flannel. (For some reason, Microsoft offers two choices of car: a race car and a sports car. Choosing the race car doesn't make you go any faster, to our dismay.) more ›

During his second day on the witness stand, former Enron Broadband Services head Ken Rice said his company might have had potential to perhaps succeed, maybe, sometime in the future if it had survived Enron's 2001 collapse. On his first day on the stand, prosecutors focused Rice largely on what was wrong at the company. On Tuesday, Rice said he and Skilling misrepresented the financial health of the failing broadband business to help a stock... more ›
