Houstonist has been a fan of local graffiti artist Ack! for a number of years now. In fact, we own a piece of his work - we took it off a pole outside Brasìl before the cops could.
His work is colorful and playful, and if we weren't a fan of it already, this video gives us yet another reason.

So now that we've officially sobered up recuperated enough to write coherently — or as coherently as we ever do — we want to take a second to thank everyone who showed up at The Coffee Groundz on Saturday for the 2nd Annual Houstonist Crawfish Boil. We think almost all our 11 readers made it, and they brought 139 of their closest friends. Now a party.
Arguably the "Best Block in Houston", 3700 Main Street, is about to expand to the neighboring block at 3600 Main. The long vacant building occupying the space next to the Continental Club, Sig's Lagoon, The Big Top Lounge, Tacos A Go-Go and The Mink/Backroom has just been purchased by 3700 Main's owners and is currently undergoing renovations.
Thanks to our 11 readers and their parole officers for joining us at The Ice House last Friday. We had a good time and hope you did, too.
Houstonist had a staff meeting last night at a fairly new bar called Saint Danes, located in the old gas station where the original Late Nite Pie once lived. Houstonist World Headquarters is located in the Montrose and we'd been meaning to check out this neighborhood bar since it's well within stumbling distance.
Soon, there will be one more reason to be jealous of your friends who live in Midtown (aside from easy light rail access and The Big Top): Crave Sushi.
What do you get when you cross the soul of a big band with the attitude of the P-Funk All-Stars? Big Sam's Funky Nation, of course!

They'll also have fresh chicken, beef, and lamb for less traditionalist cooks. Planning on being on the receiving end of...
Better late than nevah - here's our roundup of feasting and imbibing in the very near future. See the bottom of the post for some Thanksgiving food ideas, we'll be continuing to update that, and no, we won't add Grandma Kroger to the list, or any other supermarket, for that matter. Well, maybe Central Market or perhaps Whole Foods, maybe. Great American Bake Sale -Dessert Gallery, Sugar Land Friday, November 16th – 6:00 p.m. until...
Goat cheese is another one of those ingredients that people either love or hate. On the one hand, we think goat cheese is a delectable, multi-talented piece of dairy. On the other hand, one hater told us he thought it tasted like 'farm'. Hmmm. Hopefully this article will inspire a second taste, perhaps even transforming 'farm' to 'farmtastic? Goat cheese, also known as chevre cheese, has a slightly tart taste due to the higher content...
Good morning, Houston. If you've walked — or driven — downtown or in Midtown lately, chances are you've noticed the fancy new "countdown signals," which flash the number of seconds pedestrians have to cross an intersection before traffic lights change. They'll soon be installed at more than 300 intersections in neighborhoods with high amounts of pedestrian traffic, including the Medical Center; though they cost $1.3 million to put up, officials say the efficient LED...
Local tech news in a compact, digital format. City WiFi Still On Hold It's been a few months since Mayor Bill White approved a multi-million dollar deal with EarthLink to provide over 640 square miles of wireless service to Houston and we are still waiting. Earthlink should have already started installing wireless nodes on light poles around the city but has failed to do so. EarthLink is still within time constraints set by the...
This week ended with the launch of the seventh and final Harry Potter installation. Good morning, Houston. It's Friday again — the Friday before Memorial Day, to be exact. And because we'll be taking a breather on Monday, we wanted to take a chance to direct you over to the history of Memorial Day, a holiday that traces its origin to Waterloo, N.Y., in 1866. Check it out, enjoy, and have an excellent holiday. >> Microwaved baby's father drops opposition to foster care: Joshua Mauldin, the man accused...
The third Friday of the month is upon us, which means that Movers + Shakers will takeover The BackRoom @ The Mink tonight at 9 pm. Houstonist sat down for a beer with DJ & Producer Dave Wrangler, mastermind of the party. How long have you been DJing? How did you get started spinning? I first started toying with turntables in 99’. My first musical projects were hip-hop/mash-up tape edits that my brother and I...
Most of the Missed Connections this week were such a treat. Some folks want to score at the Astros game while some lady parts are on display. And, bacon was stolen. Mmm, bacon.

One hand too many. If you don’t live or work in midtown/downtown, it’s likely that you might not know about this hidden gem. Houstonist recently went to Spec’s for lunch. Yes, lunch. And then we wanted to come back for dinner and to...
Movers & Shakers Party @ The Mink Backroom It's probably no secret that Houstonist loves our inner city neighborhoods. And you may have picked up on the fact that we are quite fond of Midtown. With so much going on in this 20 square block area, how can we not? One of our favorite blocks in the neighborhood, affectionately referred to as "The Big Block" is an eclectic collection of bars, restaurants, music venues and...
As best described by www.yurisnight.net, "Yuri's Night is like the St Patricks Day or Cinco de Mayo for space." We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Another holiday giving us an excuse to drink ourselves into oblivion (or the Milky Way). Count us in. Yuri Gagarin was the first human to go into space on April 12th, 1961. "Circling the Earth in my orbital spaceship I marveled at the beauty of our planet. People...
More on yesterday's news that Metro is now in the business of land investing: According to county tax officials, the transit agency could end up having to pay taxes on two blocks of Midtown property it's holding for a private developer for several months. Metro's board approved the purchase of the property in question, a two-block, $7.2 million parcel bordered by Main, Holman, Travis and Winbern, on March 22. The seller is developer Robert H. Schultz's RHS Interests, which plans a mixed-use development for the site. RHS can buy the property back from Metro within a year for $7.2 million; for six months after that, the price will be $7.2 million plus interest; and after 18 months, Metro may do whatever it wants to with the property. For Schultz, the deal has two big benefits: The price of the land is locked for 12 months — and during that time, while Metro is holding onto the property, he won't have to pay taxes on it.
This is the third in a series of posts on upcoming City Council races. Check out last week's post about District I and District E and keep reading Houstonist for campaign coverage. There's no shortage of interest in the city council seat that Ada Edwards, District D's representative, will vacate due to term limits after this election. District D includes Neartown/Montrose, Midtown, and part of the Third Ward, as well as other neighborhoods. Local businessman...
