The Astros traded albatross-esque outfielder Jason Lane to the San Diego Padres yesterday for a player to be named later or cash. This was the first transaction by Ed Wade since he took over as the Astros general manager last week. Given the struggles that Lane has had over the past couple of seasons, and the fact that his trade value was estimated at somewhere similar to that of Cubs World Series tickets, that... more ›

Goodbye hump day, hello rain. Did anyone else have a sucky Wednesday? And to top it off, the current monsoon over our office is making us have flashbacks of the beginning of the summer. What happened to our 108 degrees and sunny?! We are on a mission to make the most of this wet and soggy day, so we are heading to the Museum of Fine Arts tonight as they present Artful Thursdays. Because... more ›

It's Friday!!!! After what feels like the longest week of our lives, Houstonist's thoughts turn to the upcoming summer and some vacation plans - which will involve frosty umbrella-drinks and white sand. Not to mention, we just heard Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" from 1978's Excitable Boy album. Where are we going with this? Well, "I saw a werewolf drinking a Pina Colada at Trader Vic's, And his hair was perfect". Houston had a Trader Vic's, at one point, on Holcombe - we think it went away when the Shamrock was razed (another crime of progress in our fair city). Shake off the gray, drizzly weather and make yourself some tropical sunshine in a glass, or, a "Pino Calado", as Milton, in Office Space would say! more ›

We've always found names kind of intruiging: why, for example, do so many men seem to have names that begin with "J", and why don't you run into too many girls names Florence anymore, when a hundred years ago it was the 7th most popular baby name in the nation? If you're interested too, (or about to have a baby, or want to waste some of your boss's time), check out The NameVoyager, which lets you track your name (or your Uncle Milton's) to see how popular it was at any point in the past 120 years. The graphics it gives you are pretty cool, too. more ›

More in the murder of 16-year-old Ashton Glover: Matthew R. McCombs, one of the two teen suspects caught trying to escape to Canada last week, has confessed to shooting Glover in the head. And why'd he do it? "Morbid curiosity," he told police. more ›

City Council on Wednesday delayed a vote again on renewing federal funding to a Second Ward day-labor site after some citizens claimed funding the facility was a violation of federal law. The debate started last week when some councilmembers expressed concern over the best use of the $100,000 from the Community Development Block Grant — particularly the honey-maned Shelley Sekula Gibbs, who has supported day-labor sites in the past but did a 180 on the... more ›

A week after The Dallas Morning News named Houston its "Texan of the Year" for the city's treatment of hurricane evacuees, Dallasites spoke out about the choice in the DMN's letters to the editor. And they liked it! The letter writers called Houston "an inspiring example of civic leadership" and lauded the paper's editorial board for "choosing a city of worth instead of a sports or entertainment figure." Even Mayor Bill wrote in, saying "it's... more ›
