Good morning, Houston. If you've ever been driving around in the 'burbs and wondered who names the streets, well, it just might be someone like Susan Vreeland-Wendt, who the Chronicle's Nancy Sarnoff interviewed yesterday. Vreeland-Wendt, marketing director for The Woodlands Operating Co., has come up with more than 1,600 names for roads, parks and neighborhoods in The Woodlands in the last 20 years. Turns out she gets inspiration from all kinds of places: paint charts, wine bottles, songs, poetry — even . "Whenever I travel I bring a note pad," she told the Chron. "It's become an obsession. After a while, you never go anywhere without noticing names of things and writing them down." Ms. Vreeland-Wendt, if you're reading, may we humbly suggest a new neighborhood called Houstonist Hills? It does have a certain ring to it ...

We thought we'd take a stroll by Minute Maid Park to see what was going on at the site of the former William Penn Hotel, located at the corner of La Branch St. and Texas Ave. With the past exploits of Spire Realty, who chose to demolish the hotel one year ago, we were sure that perhaps something interesting was in the works. If you've driven by the former AstroWorld site lately and wondered what was going on with that big, bare patch of ground, here's the answer:Planning is under way to turn it into a massive, high-density transit-oriented development. Conroe-based Angel/McIver Interests, which bought the land for $77 million last year, has asked for the creation of a municipal management district for the site, which would help fund infrastructure improvements including roads, parking facilities, drainage and landscaping....

Highway 290 is slated to be rebuilt between Loop 610 and FM 2920, while a tollway or HOV lane is planned along Hempstead Road. Real estate appraiser Mark Sikes told Sarnoff that the move will mostly affect commercial properties — which isn't...
In yesterday's Chronicle, Nancy Sarnoff had news of exactly what Midtown needs: another CVS. This one will be built on the southeast corner of Main and Elgin, right on the MetroRail line and a few blocks from the CVS at Gray and Bagby — and, more important, even fewer blocks from the new Walgreens at Smith and McGowen.
In her Sunday real estate column, the Chron's Nancy Sarnoff chronicled what could be the beginning of change on lower Westheimer — or not. Sarnoff notes the opening of the American Apparel store at 1665 Westheimer Road near Dunlavy, which to some real estate observers shows a possible shift in the funky businesses that line that stretch of street: "When national-quality tenants come in, the bar usually raises: better tenants, better foot traffic, better sales,"...
