Good morning, Houston. If you've walked — or driven — downtown or in Midtown lately, chances are you've noticed the fancy new "countdown signals," which flash the number of seconds pedestrians have to cross an intersection before traffic lights change. They'll soon be installed at more than 300 intersections in neighborhoods with high amounts of pedestrian traffic, including the Medical Center; though they cost $1.3 million to put up, officials say the efficient LED...

Wow, this would suck: In northwest Harris County last night, a man cleaning up around his work area got his hair stuck in an industrial machine. It happened around 11 p.m. at a T-3 Energy Services facility on Cypress-North Houston Road as the unidentified 19-year-old man was sweeping up near a machine that makes metal parts for energy companies. The guy thought the machine was completely turned off, but he was wrong: His long hair became caught in two long poles that continuously spin, and co-workers had to pull the guy out of the machinery. "It pulled the scalp and actually pulled him," co-worker Quincy Daniel told KPRC. "It just snatched his hair off. It threw him on the ground. When he left, his hair was still standing right there in the machine. ... It was pretty gross, but we tried our best to help him." Now, please excuse Houstonist for a moment while we hold our hands to our head, dance around the room and yell "Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!"

Here are just a few: TXU Energy is sponsoring a 5K Fun Run that benefits Sheltering Arms, an agency that provides a wide array of services for the elderly. Volunteers are needed to help with registration, set-up, water stations, etc....

We were starting to wonder whether anything was going to happen with Houston Pavilions, the retail/entertainment/residential/office complex planned for three blocks on the south end of downtown. After all, the land sale was completed in mid-January, and we haven't heard much since House of Blues and Lucky Strike signed on as tenants. But now there is news: The developers have secured $140 million in financing and groundbreaking is set for Nov. 6.

A car crash in northwest Harris County this morning sent a van flying through the front of a KFC restaurant. The excitement began just after 7 a.m. at Bammel North Houston Road and Highway 249 when a car collided with a van:
