Media reports we've heard indicate that Ike's strongest winds were felt on the Northwest side of town. This seems to be confirmed by our tour of Oak Forest, which is situated just outside the loop between Ella & TC Jester and 34th & 43rd.

A rumble in the medical center If you live in the Southgate area, you were either violently awoken by the sound of exploding dynamite around 7:10 this morning, or you were standing on Travis St. witnessing the destruction of the Crowne Plaza Hotel by Cherry Demoliton (just like its near neighbor in June 2006). The building was recently appraised at a high value and was only about 34 years old, which is one of the...
Next time you are in the mood for an extraordinary lunch that does not involve valet parking you should hop on over to Yo Mama's Soul Food Restaurant on Antoine between 43rd and Tidwell. Yo Mama's (tee hee) has been slanging the groceries for 13 years now will not be closing any time soon judging by the lunch crowd. Folks from neighborhoods near (Oak Forest) and far (Sugarland) were waiting patiently in line to pick...
The Houston Texans needed to do something to improve their offensive production. It's no secret that David Carr's tenure as Texans quarterback was growing short. Yesterday, the Texans inked a deal with Matt Schaub and ended speculation about the quarterback situation. Signing Schaub, second fiddle to The Vick in Atlanta, completed the trade terms and effectively placed Carr on the trading block. Texans GM, Rick Smith, left little doubt as to their intentions during the...

The theft happened around 1:30 a.m. Jan. 19 at Adolf Hoepfl & Son Garage, 4610 N. Shepherd. Someone stole a red, white and blue porcelain sign that showed the garage was a member of the Garagemen's Association...
Houstonist has a cousin that was infatuated with The Goonies, enough so that it became her favorite movie of all time. She also had a huge crush on Sean Astin (hopefully she got over that). While we may not totally share her enthusiasm for the adolescent adventure movie, it does bring us back to a simpler time, and back to the days when Cory Feldman was in every freakin’ teen movie released.
The Oak Forest neighborhood (just north of the loop near Ella) has a lot of history. The 60 year old subdivision was once the largest subdivision in Houston. It's now known for its affordable small frame homes and retro feel, with many Mom & Pop stores that have been in business since the early days. What it lacks, compared to other old areas like the Heights, is hip, artsy places to hang out. Well,...
