Tucked away in the shell of an old K-Mart in a west Houston strip center that defines the word "unassuming" is one of the city's best markets and -- dare we say it? -- the best salad bar around. There. The secret is out.
You weren't happy with your close proximity to downtown, the Medical Center and the Museum District; your tree-lined streets and quaint houses; your dining options that run the gamut from upscale (Hugo's, Indika, Feast, Da Marco) to down-home (Baba Yega, Cafe Montrose, Ziggy's, Lankford Grocery); your endless thrift stores and antique shops and clothing boutiques; your quirky coffee shops and bars. It just wasn't enough, was it, Montrose? Now you want your own farmer's market, too?
Houston Farmer's Market will be at Rice University today, in the parking lot south of Rice Stadium. Free parking is available at Entrances 9, 13A, 13B and the Greenbriar Lot from 3:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Even though it starts during "normal business hours", the best selections are, of course, available early. This week, the Market will have, among other things: cucumbers, strawberries, peaches, gelato, summer squashes, dandelion, grass-fed beef, poultry, pork, bison, eggs, raw cow and goats milk cheeses, ready-to-eat foods, hydroponic tomatoes, hand made soaps, and organic gardening products. So, head on over and put some "green" in your lifestyle by working in organically and locally grown foods. While you're there, don't forget to check the selection of handmade items - you may need to treat yourself or replenish the gift closet.

As you can see in the picture, The Allen Oldies just never have any fun! If you haven't seen them, shame on you! If you are wondering who Archie Bell is, and why we say you best not miss the opportunity to see him perform on the free, here is our first shot at letting you know about one of Houston's music legends.
