In celebration of the upcoming Oscars, AMC Theatres will host an "AMC Best Picture Showcase" event Saturday, Feb. 24, at 79 select AMC theatres nationwide. In Houston, the marathon will take place at AMC Gulf Pointe 30, AMC Willowbrook 24, AMC Deerbrook 24, AMC Studio 30, AMC First Colony 24. We love movies. We like the popcorn, the previews, the way there's still curtains at the old River Oaks. We like midnight movies, 11 AM bargain matinees, and driving outside the loop to go see that one movie we missed at that one really sketchy theater. Guess what? One of the year’s most controversial films came from right here in Houston. The screenplay for Brokeback Mountain was written by Diana Ossana and former River Oaks resident Larry McMurtry. You may know McMurtry’s more famous novels Terms of Endearment and Lonesome Dove, for which he won the 1986 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
