Last Chance To See 600 sq mi: Hidden

Hopefully by now you've been able to swing by Xnihilo Gallery and have a look at the wonderful photography exhibition that we put together known as 600 sq mi: Hidden. If, however, you've been too much of a lazy bum or busy bee in the last six weeks, make sure you catch it this weekend before it is too late.

High On Fire, Converge, Mastodon and Dethklok performed at the Verizon Wireless Theater and we have photographic proof.

Your First Look: 600 sq mi: Hidden Opening Photos

Congrats to the '600 sq mi' artists

You may remember a few weeks ago when we went on and on about , Houstonist's second biennial photo show. Well, we're not finished yet: Today, 45 photographers got notice that their work was selected to be part of the show, and we couldn't be more excited about seeing their photos on the gallery wall this fall. Check after the jump for these photographers' names, and congratulate them if you know them (or even if you don't).

Announcing 600 sq mi: Hidden

We hope some of you remember , Houstonist's first photo show, which we held back in 2007. We knew there were a lot of talented photographers in Houston, but that show ended up being even better than we expected: around 60 amazing images from 39 photographers, plus one heck of an opening reception. So we were just thinking: Why not do it again?

'Roid Week 2009.

Relax, this does not involve Roger Clemens, or sports at all for that matter. This week is Polaroid Week 2009, a celebration of all things instant - at least in regard to film cameras. Hosted on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/groups/polaroidweek2009, the event is open to everyone.

Houstonist has an active and amazing Flickr photo group. We receive many, many photos of Houston and the surrounding areas every day and unless you are an active visitor to our photo pool many of these photos go unnoticed. So in a weekly effort to bring you more amazing photos from Houstonist readers and photographers, we are going to feature a block of photos submitted to our Flickr photo group. The images will be dug up from deep within our photo pool archives and we hope to expose you to even more wonderful Houston photography.

Every year Art League Houston bestows honors upon artists and patrons who make significant contributions to Texas contemporary art. This year their pick for Artist of the Year is photographer Keith Carter.

Houston's cityscape has changed drastically since the photo below was taken by Dmitri Kessel in 1946; one would expect nothing less from a city that's continually reinventing itself, erasing its own history and creating new futures with each passing day.

Houstonist ventured downtown on Saturday afternoon to enjoy the dazzling artistic talent on display at Via Colori, along with what seemed like half of the city. Benefiting the Center for Hearing and Speech, the third annual Via Colori showcased the amazing talents of local artists while raising money to help teach Houston-area hearing-impaired children learn to speak instead of relying solely upon sign language.

This weekend finds a new collection of Hurricane Ike photos to share with you, courtesy of the generous contributions to the Houstonist Flickr group. Next week we'll to return to our regularly-scheduled Houstonist Photo of the Day (PotD) feature, so keep those submissions coming!

Houstonist will continue to feature more of your Ike photos for the rest of the week, as long as you keep 'em coming. Today's batch reveals sides of Hurricane Ike that we haven't seen yet, as more and more of you post your photos to our Flickr group.

We asked you to share more of your Hurricane Ike photos with us and you did! Below are more of your amazing pictures of the Houston area before, during and after the hurricane.

Houstonist has been scouring the interwebs, looking for informative, interesting or just plain weird photos from during and after Hurricane Ike. Below are some of our favorites so far:

The 2008-2009 DiverseWorks season opens on September 19 with Understanding Poverty, a multimedia exhibition by Houston-based photojournalist Ben Tecumseh DeSoto. The exhibition will feature DeSoto's 20-year investigation into Houston's homeless and working poor, with field reporting contributed by Ann Walton Sieber and a special light installation by Sarah Whatley Ayers.

Wherever you may be headed tonight, make sure to at least do a fly-by at the Contemporary Arts Museum so you don't kick yourself later for missing Steel Lounge Underground.

If you're anything like Houstonist, you loved Mad Libs as a kid (noun...snot! adjective...stupid! verb...fart! and so on). And if you're not too cool to admit it, you probably still love them now (although, hopefully your vocabulary has expanded somewhat since your playground days).

The sun rose on a beautiful, windy day on Sunday. In the whispers of the wind, you could almost hear the encouragement, and smell the impending victory. Your valiant Houstonist staff would soon convene to take on the Houston Arts & Media Houston History Road Rally (HAMHHRR) for the sake of honor, historical preservation, and cheap beer.

The thought may have crossed your mind once some balmy spring day in early March, pre-heat, as the flowers start to bloom but the mosquitoes haven't yet returned. Or perhaps you realized it some fall evening as you relaxed on a patio having drinks while people in the northern half of the country listened to their radiators clank like a death knell. "Houston's not so bad, in fact, despite the [_____], it's worth it." Okay,...
