Almost 1,000 Houstonians showed up to City Hall this past Saturday afternoon to protest the passage of California's Proposition 8. And although we didn't have any popular comediennes come out at our protest, we still had a strong turnout befitting Houston's status as the largest LGBT community in Texas (nearly 62,000 people in Houston identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender) and the sixth largest in the nation. Below are some of your photos......

Good morning, Houston. As we were sitting around Monday morning contemplating using a witch's extremity to keep warm, we started to wonder exactly how cold it's gotten in the city before — and, thanks to the Internet, we know! According to the National Weather Service, the record low temperature for Houston was 5 degrees Fahrenheit, which we hit on Jan. 23, 1940. Maybe more interesting, though, is the Houston snowfall record: Turns out we......

Every so often we're too lazy to read every MC there's a Missed Connection that stands out from the crowd. This is one of those so oftens. just a kiss... - w4m I’m a girl. (or woman, what have you) I’m in my mid 20s. I am polite, respectful, well spoken, intelligent, from a great family, and very independent But it occurred to me a few weeks ago that I can’t remember the last......

The tryptophan has worn off, we all trudge back to work, and sit down to surf the web. Between another crushing Texans loss, the Aggies poaching one of the Texans' coaches, and the Rockets finally getting their act together, it was a busy holiday season for Houston sports. Let Houstonist do the surfing for you and bring you up to speed on what the web is saying about our teams: - Ok, this is just......

So we're not sure what qualifies Leonard Nimoy to be an expert on this subject, but, we fully support feminist concepts, especially when negative stereotypes and cultural biases are put into question. So we're going with it. Especially considering Mr. Nimoy seems to have really tamed his raging machismo since his space-traveling days, as evidenced by the disturbing image seen at left. We commend him for growing as a person, and as a Vulcan. Tomorrow......

Kipling St. cleaned up a bit by Peter Brown Kipling Street, just behind the Alabama Theater/Shopping Center, will be a little more flat this week. 2136 and 2140 Kipling (pictures) are set to be demolished, and the current owner of the two properties - built in 1925 and 1938 - is listed as at-large man #1, Peter Brown. While there are no apparent plans for the land, we assume that they will not be the......

Cara Barer—The Book Project DeSantos Gallery Beginning with just a found soiled copy of the Yellow Pages, Cara Barer created The Book Project, and eventually had volumes of new sculptures resulting from old books. As book lovers, our first inclination was to scoff at the idea of destroying old books for the sake of art. But then we saw the sculptures. This is one of the Houstonist's favoritist things we've seen in a long time.......

::OpMom Web 2.0 Launch Party at Benjy's:: Three things we love: Moms, Web 2.0, and Benjy's. Can't go wrong here. And Houstonist has your ticket to this private launch party. Unless you've been living under a Web 1.0 rock, you are probably aware that Houston has recently been a hot bed for Social Media Startups, as Brad Hem reported this weekend. One of these ventures, the locally-based OpMom, tonight celebrates their own jaunt into Web......

695 Rocky River - Tanglewood This week, the almost 5,000 square foot mid-century Tanglewood home designed by Ralph A. Anderson, Jr. (of Wilson, Morris, Crain & Anderson architects) met its demise - one in a series of many large (and large-lotted) unique mid-century homes in this close-in treed area to be replaced by even larger Mediterr-uscan-Spani-French style homes. According to the Houston Architectural Guide,The full impact of the Eisenhower era is visible here [in Tanglewood],......

Good morning, Houston. It's always nice to see our fair city get some love from outside — so we were happy to hear that Lester Holt and a crew from the Today show were in town filming yesterday for the show's "Cities They Love" segment. The point of "Cities They Love" is to showcase off-the-beaten-path attractions, so Today visited the Beer Can House, took a ride along Buffalo Bayou and checked in at the......

This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King and appreciated their beautiful skyline. Chicagoist knows what it's like to like the Cubs. But naming your kid Wrigley Fields? At least they can breathe a little easier now that Grossman's out and......

We love looking at pretty pictures - perhaps a throwback to days past when 'reading' was more of a thorough perusal of lovely story-telling illustrations. Lazy kids... So when we got a chance to speak with up and coming Houston photographer Dirtyfeet (aka: Brittany Elidemir) we got sweaty-palmed excited!! To kick things off, a few quickie H-Town related questions with Dirtyfeet: Best pizza in town? Late Nite Pie!! Get the stanky whore... Favorite Houston......

It's time for another Photo of the Day Special Edition. Today we have photos and a video from our Happy Birthday Houston Pub Crawl that was held Friday, August 31. We had a great time downtown. We stopped at The State Bar, Cabo, Shay McElroys and Warren's. We got to meet and mingle with our readers as well as grab a bite to eat and put back a few. This event was a blast, but......

9602 Moonlight Drive, located in Meyerland at the intersection of Braesheather Drive, is one of our all time favorite mid-century homes in Houston. It was designed and built by Robert Cohen in 1964, and he and his wife lived in the home until 2004 when it was sold to John M. O'Quinn - yes that O'Quinn. From the smell of it, O'Quinn (who lives in River Oaks) let the house sit for three years and......

Houstonist hits Italy's Rimini Beach every Pasqua (that's Easter for y'all that don't habla) for fun in the sun, dynamite food and to make-uh the party. And while you can make-uh the party without booze, we like-uh our booze. One of our favorite Italian libations is limoncello. Limoncello is a great aperitif or digestif that is made from grain alcohol, lemon zest and sugar. The drink is sweet and sour, but not like Chinese food.......

Victor Montano, a sixteen-year-old Houstonian, was hit and killed by a police vehicle in New Orleans. He had been visiting the city for about two weeks. Police caught Montano spray painting along the floodwall last Thursday afternoon. When he saw the police, he took off running and the officer followed in his SUV. The officer said it appeared as though Victor was going to jump over a fence, but when tripped and fell in front......

If you were inside on Saturday, avoiding the heat and humidity, you had the opportunity to watch the Texans take on the reigning NFC Champion Chicago Bears. Preseason or not, the Texans were no match for the Bears, losing 20-19 at Reliant. Franchise savior du jour Matt Schaub was 3-5 on pass attempts, but he did actually show poise in the pocket in situations that would've made David Carr curl into a fetal position. RB......

A bullet was fired through a window at KPFT world headquarters in Montrose around 1 a.m. this morning, narrowly missing a woman's head. Fortunately, no one was actually injured in the incident. Pictures of the window were posted on the KPFT blog within hours. In the same blog post, station manager Duane Bradley indicated what seems to be the consensus, that he believes the station was expressly targeted by the unidentified shooter: Security considerations will......

Cell phones can be annoying, sure: when someone takes a call in a movie, for example, or during a funeral. And that's just the voice part — something that tends to get overlooked is how some asshats can now take pictures of anything they want to using their camera phones. It's happening at the University of Houston, where some women are claiming they were photographed in campus restrooms. The first incident happened just after 3......

Antonya Nelson, one of our resident writer geniuses here in town, recently placed *another* story in the New Yorker, and it takes place in Houston! Get a load of that! The story is called "Shauntrelle." Here are the opening lines: "It isn’t just a husband you divorce but a life. A credit rating. Certain friends—sadly, some of them small children. A mother-in-law, that innocent bystander. And sometimes it seemed to Constance that she had divorced......

While SFist cringed at the fatal dose of crime littering the Bay Area, it found solace in Hillary Clinton's San Francisco campaign headquarters opening, which featured loads of exposed mammary glands. In other news, SF Taxi Commission ruled that Satan's cab must keep its (in)famous medallion number, 666; and in an un-fashion-forward frenzy, San Francisco Fashion Week (chortle) bars bloggers from covering and getting smashed at their shows and parties, respectively. Also, they found a......

As we noted yesterday, the Doyle house on Heights Boulevard is no more — and Harry James, the man who had it demolished, is pissed off that anyone tried to save it. In an e-mail to the Chronicle, James said the house was beyond repair: "This house is not a historic mansion, as is being classified in the media by my opponents. It sat in disrepair for 35 years, without any occupants and with major......

We're starting to reconsider our plan to apply for a job as a Metro bus driver: On Tuesday, two men attacked a bus driver after arguing with her over the fare, marking the second assault on a Metro driver this week. According to the Chronicle, the men — who appeared inebriated — got into a dispute over fares with the driver and made a threat against her, then walked back into the bus. About 10......

There are some restaurants we go to because we love the food and others because we like the décor and atmosphere. Jenni’s Noodle House is neither but we love going here because we like how it makes us feel. This popular downtown lunch hot spot is quirky and personable. Devoted patrons almost seem to carry a badge of honor after a meal at Jenni’s. Owners Scott and Jenni imprint their personality throughout their humble restaurant.......

We've covered a few distinctive thieves in the last few months: the cell phone bandit, the bicycle bandit, the dapper bandit, the bad hair bandit — and now there's a new one: the bossy bandit, who was reportedly quite rude when he knocked over a west Houston bank last week. According to FBI officials, the man walked into the Wells Fargo branch on the Katy Freeway near Highway 6 at around 5 p.m. last Tuesday;......

Houston has lost the 1929 Coca-Cola Bottling Plant (Pringle & Smith and Alfred C. Finn, architects), located on the east side of downtown at 2600 Capitol. The building was most recently occupied by Leggett's Fabrics, which relocated to Fort Bend County in 2005. The area is being redeveloped from industrial to residential, and there is a sign on the corner indicates that the new development will be called "Capitol Oaks Two," a supplement to......

Seems like everyone has a video on YouTube these days — even gang members in the Fifth Ward. KHOU found the video made by self-professed gang members, who talk about crime, life on the streets and grills (which cost $1,500 cash, apparently). As you might expect, city leaders aren't too happy about the video: "They can't be the voice of the Fifth Ward," City Councilman Jarvis Johnson, whose district includes the neighborhood, said. "I'm......

Good morning, Houston. Remember Radar, the adorable Channel 2 weather dog? If you're a Ken Hoffman reader, we can't imagine how you'd forget. It turns out someone in Tyler was a big fan of the idea: a TV station there has their own weather dog, Stormy. Stormy serves a function similar to Radar's and also wears an American flag bandana and takes ridiculous pictures. Just another reason to be glad you don't live in......

The Bald Heretic had an interesting bit of doorspam this week. The spammers didn't want to trim his trees or sell him pizza though. They wanted him to worship with them.. at Tinseltown. Apparently, a local church left a flyer on his door that said first-time visitors to Celebration Worship (10:15 Sundays at the not-so-safe Tinseltown Westchase, if you're interested) with Church at the Cross receive a free movie ticket. We wonder what movie they'll......
