Yar! Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Houstonians, grab some rum and behave badly - don't forget your eyepatch and your parrot! OH, and the hat - we love us some hats! Don that puffy shirt and swill some grog, or rum - or hijacked wine (from your friends houses - we don't condone thievery, unless it's among friends and well co-workers)! We have been singing along to the "Pirates of the... more ›

Houston native Woody Williams (5-11) dominated the Pittsburgh Pirates today pitching eight shutout innings while only allowing five hits for the 1-0 Astros win. Williams showed great control with all his pitches and didn't allow a walk in today's outing. With Hunter Pence injured on a head first slide, Luke Scott stepped in the sixth inning and delivered what would be the game winning RBI single. Brad Lidge pitched the ninth inning for his... more ›

The road to 3,000 continued Tuesday night in Los Angeles as Craig Biggio recorded two hits to move closer to baseball history. While facing Bartolo Colon in the top of the fourth inning, Biggio punched a single over the glove of Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick for career hit 2,991. In the top of the sixth inning while facing an 0-2 count from Colon, Biggio smacked an infield single to shortstop Orlando Cabrera for hit... more ›

Rice swept Texas A&M in two games over the weekend to win themselves a trip to Omaha's College World Series: their sixth trip in history and fourth in the last six years. (Last year, the Owls were eliminated at the very end by Oregon State). In the first game of the Super-Regional, a sellout crowd watched freshman All-American Ryan Berry pitch into the eight inning, striking out ten, and went home happy as the Owls... more ›

We hate to ruin the suspense, but what the heck: the rum? Still gone, people. That's indicative of the general tenor of Pirates of the Caribbean III: At World's End. There's still Orlando Bloom being kind of a tool for the most part, still Keira Knightly being plucky, and still Johnny Depp being Keith Richards. Of course, this time there's also Keith Richards being Keith Richards, which may explain Depp's seeming drop in quality from movies one and two in the series. Or perhaps, it's just that his deliciously subversive Captain Jack Sparrow isn't a pleasant surprise anymore, but a given. more ›

Are you an impatient person? Do you have a short attention span? Do you hate Gregorian chant? If you've answered yes to any of these questions, Houstonist warmly invites you to not go see Into Great Silence, as you will not enjoy it. We also recommend that you not consider entering an ascetic brotherhood, either. more ›

The Astros woes continued last night after a dominant complete game outing by Pirates southpaw, Paul Maholm (1-2, 3.96 ERA) as the Bucs defeated the Astros 3-0. Playing in their third city in as many days, the Astros bats must have been left back in Philadelphia. Maholm surrendered only three hits, two to Craig Biggio, while striking out four. The game got to an ugly start in the bottom of the first inning when... more ›

The Official Tall Ship of Texas, the Elissa, has recently been given a makeover. Well, more like a facelift. The Elissa is an impressive 205 feet long and nearly 100 feet tall at her mast. Recently, Elissa's sails have been repaired and she's now in seafaring condition. more ›

You wont read game analysis here at Houstonist, but being Opening Day and all, we thought you needed to know what happened yesterday. If you missed the game, you can be thankful — it was probably the worst way to begin the year. It wasn't all bad, though, which is probably why the game felt like a punch in the stomach. Oswalt was brilliant, pitching 7 1/3 innings and allowing a run. Luke Scott... more ›

Well hello, Houston! It's the greatest day in America: Opening Day 2007! Spring Training is over, the roster is set and now it's time to play ball. The Astros' main concern last year was hitting. Heck, it was pathetic, but Uncle Drayton broke out the checkbook, signed power hitter Carlos Lee for a cool $100 million and added utility player and 2006 All-Star Mark Loretta. Also new to the team are a pair of native... more ›

With Halloween just days away, we’re beginning the time of year when we Americans do everything in excess. Which isn’t so different than our normal behavior, except that now we’ve got excuses to go the extreme. (We eat about 25 pounds of candy a year – with a majority of that being around Halloween.) And aside from New Year’s, Halloween is one of the biggest party nights of they year. Pirates, ghosts and scantily clad girls will consume copious amounts of alcohol all around the Western world this weekend, and we’ve got your hook-up on the best places to go in Houston to celebrate this All Hallow’s Eve: more ›

So, how 'bout them Astros? more ›

God, we're so sick of Snakes on a Plane that we want to kill anyone and everyone that makes a "something on a something" joke. But then we realized that there was no way we could ever win this fight, and, hell, if you can't beat them, we might as well join them. And with that, you have the theme of this week's Gothamist network post. Austinist makes it easy for us, with Candidate... more ›

One of last weekend's biggest-hyped openings, Miami Vice is directed by Michael Mann, whose dark vision gave the 80s TV show its signature look as well as embuing Mann's movies (Heat, Collateral) with a similar sensibillity. Like Mann's other flicks, Miami Vice has plenty of style and sex appeal--even the explosions are kinda hot--but unlike the others, it doesn't have the performances (of Tom Cruise in 2004's Collateral, Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro in Heat)... more ›
