::The Orange Show for Visionary Arts Concert Series:: We told you about this event in this week's Thriftster, but decided it was waaaaaay to cool not to be reminded of again. I mean, would you seriously know what to do if we didn't tell you these things? Don't answer that. Unless the answer is "No." This new concert series, co-sponsored by SugarHill Studios, is dedicated to showcasing musicians as original as the Orange Show... more ›

When Houstonist was little, this video freaked us out. Not sure if it was the punked-out middle school girl, the suit-clad men with chainsaws, or the multiple instruments being destroyed. It's weirdness is what made the Art of Noise's "Close (To the Edit)" extraordinary back in 1984. Many people (including us) didn't know that the band Art of Noise was created by record producer Trevor Horn and music journalist Paul Morley. Horn is best... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Let's take a trip to the United Kingdom for a bit to learn how they celebrate Orangemen's Day. July 12 means "Orange marches" in this area to commemorate Prince William of Orange's victory over King James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 (remember your world history?). This day has sometimes been the cause of sectarian clashes between Protestants and Catholics, although most of the parades are very peaceful,... more ›

From the tallest skyscraper in the City of Brotherly Love to Canadian tourism copywriting brilliance, here's what you should know from our -ist cities: This week, Phillyist took a gleeful listen to the White Stripes' exciting new release, watched in awe as their new tallest skyscraper was finally completed, found a cheaper way to get to Gothamist, invented a tasty new dessert, and brought back their Craigslist Round-Up feature with a bang. Bostonist watches... more ›

Seattlest has a talk with the photographer from last week's "Segway Mom" and then experiences some dissension in the ranks over the question of wine vs. beer. It's not West Side Story, but about as close as they'll get. They're also still waiting on some inbox relief after a spammer is arrested. As Chicagoist counts down the days to its third anniversary party, they found all-organic pizza to be underwhelming amidst the hoopla, tried... more ›

Here’s your chance to see a young Grammy-nominated artist, who just happen to call Houston her hometown, on us. We have two pairs of tickets to giveaway to Tamar Davis’ headlining show this Friday night at Warehouse Live. For those new to Tamar’s music, we’ll give you some background. She used to be one of the lead singers of local band Girl’s Tyme – that band ended up becoming Destiny’s Child after she left. Don’t... more ›

The Press panned it, so Houstonist went to see Shrek 3 with some reservations (read: at the behest of our roommate, because there's nothing else, because Spiderman is playing on approximately 95294372 screens). But reviewers, as it happens, have been wrong before. more ›

The Houston Astros won for the ninth time in 11 games as Craig Biggio crushed the hearts of Milwaukee Brewers fans with a grand slam in the ninth inning, which gave the Astros their third consecutive come from behind win. The stage was set as Chris Burke led off the ninth with a bunt that was seemingly caught for the first out, but pitcher Matt Wise couldn't hold on. Adam Everett then walked and... more ›

Well hello, Houston! It's the greatest day in America: Opening Day 2007! Spring Training is over, the roster is set and now it's time to play ball. The Astros' main concern last year was hitting. Heck, it was pathetic, but Uncle Drayton broke out the checkbook, signed power hitter Carlos Lee for a cool $100 million and added utility player and 2006 All-Star Mark Loretta. Also new to the team are a pair of native... more ›

Wicked Returns to the Hobby Center It's baaaaack! If you were one of the unfortunate ones who missed last year's run of the prequel to The Wizard of Oz, do yourself a favor and don't miss it this year. Long before Dorothy dropped in, two other girls meet in the Land of Oz. One - born with emerald green skin - is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular.... more ›

Last month, we unveiled the first Houstonist iMix. We got a kick out of sharing our favorite songs, and it seems like some of our 11 readers enjoyed it, too. So, we decided to make it a monthly ritual. We now bring you the Houstonist iMix: March 2007 (albeit a week late — we had trouble with the publishing feature on iTunes, but it has now been fixed). This month’s iMix includes some upcoming indie... more ›

Good morning, Houston. With everything that's changing in today's world, it's nice to know that abbreviated rock star Prince can still make headlines. Today, the world — or at least a very small, sorta interested portion of it — is trying to figure out whether a silhouette of Prince, guitar in hand, projected during the Super Bowl halftime show was naughty. See, Prince was holding the guitar at an angle that made it look... more ›

Between fake terrorist alerts and scandals big and small, this just might be the Best Best of the -ists ever. We're exhausted just thinking about it. First up, SFist, who saw their little 'ole site be the center of what was a nice little scandal (even getting their editor on TV) only to find their scandal dwarfed by the even bigger scandal caused by their Mayor boffing one of his aides' wife. We're not... more ›

Super Bowl Shuffle - video powered by Metacafe Houstonist is not picking sides on this weekend’s Super Bowl (well, at least not publicly), but we do feel the need to show the Chicago Bears Shufflin’ Crew’s “Super Bowl Shuffle” from the 1985-86 season for several reasons: 1) The Bears are in the Super Bowl this year, 2) The video is so campy, it’s funny 3) We have to support our fellow –ist site in the... more ›

As the world holds its breath, teetering precariously on the cusp of the Super Bowl (well, at least in America), the wheels of the -ists keep on turning. Austinist was in a musical frame of mind as they listened to the new Shins album, updated the SXSW band listings and got called "punk rock" for their efforts by MTV. And an ice storm swept through the area. Bostonist said goodbye to John Kerry's plans... more ›

Houstonist is always excited to find out our city has been been recognized as a "top" destination for anything. Over the last few years we've been awarded with having one of the nations most visited museums (HMNS), boasting the 2nd most theather seats in the nation, and even one of the top places for relocating singles. With all of this recent attention on our metropolis, it's no surprise that the nation's socialites would soon... more ›

Ah, "The Bachelor". Last night marked the end of the new season. And even though we kind of stopped keeping up with the show after both women from Texas were given the proverbial boot, we had to watch the season finale to see who the Prince chose to be his Princess. Our money was on Sadie, and it had been since the beginning. (Though we realized last night that the name “Sadie Borghese” sounds ridiculous.)... more ›

Watching “The Bachelor: Rome” is, at this point, a bit like holding on to a bad relationship. You know something is awry, but you want so badly for it to be good again! The first few weeks, we could justify that maybe Prince Hottie Lorenzo just had bad taste in women. Now, all signs are strongly pointing towards puppet masters (otherwise known as producers) making the stupid decisions for him. Last night’s episode began... more ›

We love the "The Bachelor: Rome" so much that tonight, in honor of Prince Hottie Lorenzo, we'll be live blogging during the show. What that means is that you'll get our snide comments regarding Ms. Thang (aka Erica the socialite) in real time! The show starts at 8 p.m. on ABC 13. You can check out a preview of tonight's drama filled episode before you tune in to see what kind of reality show... more ›

We just want to know… are the people in charge of “The Bachelor” joking? Really? Are they kidding? Because this season is making us lose complete faith in the authenticity of reality TV shows. Especially ones that are meant to end in marriage. Our faith is being tested because on last night’s episode of “The Bachelor”, Prince Hottie Lorenzo actually offered a rose to native Houstonian Erica. This upsets us because we really think... more ›

Remember the Houston school board's mostly private meeting at Vic & Anthony's a couple of weeks ago? The one where HISD trustees racked up a bill of $1,786.50 — that's $150 per person — while discussing Superintendent Abelardo Saavedera's job performance? The one that a private company paid for? Yeah, well, the Chronicle brings the meeting up again today and asks the question that's been on our minds: Was it ethical? And the answer is no. And yes. more ›

Normally, when it comes to national reality tv shows, we’re all about rooting for any Houstonian. It’s a chance for people to see that not all Texans speak with slow drawls or chew straw between meals. We like that, right? Last night, we caught the 2-hour premiere of the ABC show “The Bachelor”. (Which we also love.) So imagine our surprise when we see that the Houstonian chosen to represent our city was a... more ›

If only Missed Connections could be planned in advance. Then maybe young Houston lovers wouldn't be so discouraged by the way they are dressed when they have them! more ›

Houston women had the chance to get a chance to become a princess over the weekend. (Yes, that confused us a bit, too.) There were open casting calls for the reality show The Bachelor: Rome on Friday at the local ABC studios and on Sunday at Katy Mills Mall. We’re a little surprised the casting wasn’t held outside of some fancy schmancy store in the Galleria, considering the social status of the new Bachelor.... more ›

Houstonist, for one, always liked our bike — despite the skinned knees — because we had a cool helmet. Rumors that it had a picture of Mickey Mouse are unsubstantiated, but should you be lucky enough to run across Houstonist on Friday, you can check it out, since we'll be breaking it out of storage for National Bike to Work Day. more ›

Princess Diana fans, take note: There's a theory afloat in England (at least at the Inquirer) that someone — a certain royal someone with jug ears, we think — is trying to rub out the memory of the princess by removing her portraits from public view. At issue is a 1981 portrait of Diana by Bryan Organ that was on display in the royal section of the National Portrait Gallery in London. A couple of weeks before Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles, the portait of Di disappeared, and officials at the NPG say it's probably not coming back. more ›

Houstonist loves music, and we love sharing good music with you — that right there sounds like a '70s love ballad. We all got together to structure a list of our favorite albums of 2005. After lots of debating and a few bloody noses (OK, OK, Arcade Fire’s album was technically released last year, so we won’t include it — geesh!), we finally settled on our favorite albums of the year, in no particular order:... more ›
