It seems like Houston has a litany of musicians that are involved in multiple projects - the propensity for collaboration among its members happens to be one of our favorite things about the local scene. Heck, everyone in Grandfather Child has another band, half of Buxton plays in sIngs, half of sIngs performs in Giant Princess or Ghormeh Sabzi, Taylor & Darrin Lee have at least three groups, and Chris Ryan is fairly legendary for his abundance of involvement. In our punk circle, however, one name seems to crop up most: Josh Wolf.

It’s been a busy year of festival attending here at H-Town Rock. Not only did we have a great time at Houston’s own Westheimer Block Party back in October, we also trekked to Austin, TX to attend the orgies of live music that are South By Southwest in March and Austin City Limits Fest in September. Thus, while H-Town Rock has made it its mission to celebrate all that is good and worthy in the Houston music scene (and to see it grow), we would be remiss as musical observers to not visit Austin on occasion to enjoy that city’s strong musical life. And, in only its third year in existence, Fun Fun Fun Fest has risen to become a standard-bearer in Austin’s true underground/indie music community, bringing together a collection of punk, indie, and rock acts that was both deep and wide in representation. “How deep and wide?” you might ask. Here’s a sampling of who we did not see: Trail of Dead, The National, DOA, Kool Keith, Bouncing Souls, Clipse, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Nevertheless, we spent the past weekend at FFF Fest (held in Waterloo Park) and had an amazing time. Enjoy our rundown!
We're having a good Christmas so far, but between Aunt Peggy's constant nagging ("When are you going to settle down and get married?") and our new nephew's constant crying and screaming, we need a break. After dinner, we should be able to get away from the family for a bit. Most places are closed, but there are a few options: seeing a movie is the obvious one, but the crowds won't help us relax. Now, a good live band and a beer -- that sounds more like it.

Ghostland Observatory’s Thomas Turner and Aaron Behrens just might be the hardest working men in the electronic/funk-glam/rock music biz. It is a very diverse week for music in Houston. Arizona alt-rock band Scary Kids Scaring Kids hit the Meridian tonight. Last night, Warehouse Live played host to the annual Houston Press Music Awards. Houstonist was there to absorb all of the entertainment and was treated to some of the best local music around. There’s no better way to finish off a long holiday weekend than by going to a concert and having a few alcoholic beverages in honor of the day. If you’re willing to travel outside of the loop (we know you may require a special cream in order to accomplish this) you can actually find some amazing venues and amazing shows.
