As has been anticipated for months, Circuit City announced this morning that they will begin liquidating and closing down all remaining U.S. stores. The chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2008, but was unable to refinance its multibillion-dollar debt or find a buyer. The closings amount to 567 stores, 13 of which are in the Houston area, and a staggering 30,000 lost jobs nationwide. Basic math would indicate an average of 53 employees per store, or close to 700 jobs lost in Houston as a result. Equally depressing is the idea of all the "big box" Circuit City stores that will sit vacant and useless, with special respect to the so-new-you-can-still-smell-the-paint location at Bunker Hill and I-10 that never even opened. Got a Circuit City gift card for Christmas? First, slap the person that gave it to you. And when you're done, get out there and use it while you still can.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Bed, Bath & Beyond competitor Linens-N-Things would be closing 120 stores across the country in an effort to cut costs and save their company from liquidation after declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May. At that time, the only stores in Houston to be affected by the nationwide closures were the Post Oak location near the Galleria and the location inside the similarly-plagued West Oaks Mall.

We've been noticing gas prices falling in our neighborhood, and apparently that's part of the trend across the area: The AAA Texas weekly gas price survey shows the average price for a gallon of unleaded gas in Houston this week was $2.06, down 3.2 cents from last week and the lowest average price of any listed in Texas. We wouldn't call it cheap yet, but it's way better than paying nearly $3 a gallon, right?...
So we doubt we'll live to see the day when Texans give up their pickup trucks — but for a change, truck sales in Texas are almost flat this year compared with the same period in 2005, and it took dealers a longer time to sell trucks during the summer. Truck sales are better in Texas and Oklahoma than in the rest of the country because the oil business is doing well and companies are...
