Houstonist Listens: The Literary Greats' Ocean, Meet The Valley

We'll fess up right away: Houstonist has had this album for some time now. Band member Taylor Lee passed it to us a while back, and we eagerly gobbled it up, waiting for the right moment to unleash our opinions upon the teeming hordes of Houstonist readers. Yes, yes, you can order the album online, but seeing as the official CD release is this Saturday at The Continental Club, now seemed a fine time to inform the masses just how good this album really is.

Houstonist Listens: Ghost Mountain's Summer Tapes EP

Dear reader, Houstonist is most certain that you've seen us gushing about Ghost Mountain, our favorite teen duo from Baytown. Rest assured that when we are extolling their musicality via H-Town Rock installments and urging you to attend their performances, the hype is indeed worth it. To evidence that, we bring you the latest iteration in their catalog: the Summer Tapes EP.

Houstonist Listens: Followed By Static's "Lullaby/AADC"

From time to time, something wonderful happens in the universe, and Houstonist gets passed some music to review. Occasionally this wonderfulness materializes in vinyl form, an occurrence that makes our ears perk up and take notice. So when Austin duo Followed By Static offered to send us a copy of their new 7" single, Lullaby, naturally we answered with a resounding yes. [Note to other bands: take the hint. Send us stuff.]

Houstonist Listens: Buxton's Feathers/Flint 7"

There are several things that have a special spot in our heart: Lone Star on tap at Walter's, our favorite pair of underwear, the fries at Barnaby's, and listening to records on a turntable all fall into the above category. Houstonist wants you to know, reader, that local music stalwarts Buxton have obtained notable rank among these things we cherish.

Houstonist Eats: Little Big's

Everyone likes burgers. Even vegetarians like burgers; that's why they make round patties of veggie-whatever called Boca Burgers. And while we Texans are usually known for our predelection for great big things, we've learned from Craig Biggio and Walter's on Washington that good things can come in small packages. Which brings us to Little Big's.

When Wilco last played Houston in 2005, their critically acclaimed album, A Ghost Is Born, had recently been released, and they rode into town on a wave of support. 2007's Sky Blue Sky divided critics with its mellow, meandering rock, a far cry from the challenging and dynamic sounds of the Chicago-based band's previous albums. As if to directly address these critics, Wilco opened Friday night's stand at Verizon Wireless Theater with some of the most laid-back tracks from their most recent record.

Upscale Barbecue. Sounds like an oxymoron, right? BBQ, the real sport that precedes major sporting events, the Five Elements (Brisket, Link, Beans, Tater Salad, Sauce), the food group that evolved out of the simple necessity of cattle drives: surely it can't be froofy without ceasing to be bbq. Monica Pope, proprietor and mastermind behind the beloved t'afia, decided to see if she could make the two words fit together in a converted icehouse in the Sixth Ward. The result was Beaver's. But does Beaver's live up to its founder's reputation and its own surprising goal?

The big opening this week is Will Ferrell's latest, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Looks to us like Anchorman-meets-NASCAR, and indeed it's produced, written, etc. by a lot of the same people. We found Anchorman overrated, but previews for this look like it's a good fit for Ferrell's particular brand of humor. Reviews claim it falls flat as satire but as improvisational comedy it looks about as good as anything Ferrell's ever done,...

OK, you caught us: Houstonist has a secret wish to fufill all your entertainment needs. In that vein, we're instituting a movie calander! You can just call us "entertainment guru". Here's what's opening on your local silver screen this weekend.... Miami Vice, starring Colin Farrell and Oscar winner Jaime Foxx (Ray), headlines this week's openings, directed by Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral), who was the guiding light behind the 80s TV series. Nightmares and Dreamscapes, a miniseries, consisting of eight hour-long episodes, comes to us straight from the mind of Stephen King. All-star casts include William H. Macy, William Hurt, and Jeremy Sisto ("Six Feet Under's" Billy Chenoweth). One future offering stars Claire Forlani, best known for making out with Brad Pitt in Meet Joe Black...assuming you stayed awake that long. Forlani plays one half of an American couple honeymooning in London who basically..um...get trapped in what...

Houstonist loves music, and we love sharing good music with you — that right there sounds like a '70s love ballad. We all got together to structure a list of our favorite albums of 2005. After lots of debating and a few bloody noses (OK, OK, Arcade Fire’s album was technically released last year, so we won’t include it — geesh!), we finally settled on our favorite albums of the year, in no particular order:...
